Chapter 115: Chapter 115

Lily POV

I sat at the kitchen counter, staring at the lasagna I’d spent hours making. Kai’s favorite comfort food, just the way he liked it - extra cheese, a hint of basil. The clock on the wall showed 7:45 PM. He should have been down an hour ago.

The past two weeks in the pack house had been... challenging. Luna Helen begged me to move back into the pack house, insisting that Kai needed me—at least until he recovered. I had hesitated, not sure if that was truly what was best for either of us, but in the end, I had agreed.

But the Kai I was living with wasn’t the one I knew.

At first, it had seemed like things were getting back to normal. Kai went back to work, attending meetings, overseeing patrols, and fulfilling his duties as Alpha. But even though his routine was the same, he wasn’t. There was a distance between us, something invisible but suffocating, like a wall I couldn’t break through.

It started with small things. I would be speaking to him, and suddenly, his expression would go blank, his mind drifting somewhere far away. When I tried to shake him out of it, his reaction was immediate and violent. His eyes would flash dark, his breathing would turn ragged, and before I knew it, I’d be pinned against the wall. It never lasted long—only a few seconds before he would shake his head, his eyes widening into horror as he realized what he had done.

I rubbed my arm absently, wincing at the bruises hidden beneath my long sleeves. Three days ago, he’d thrown me across the room when I tried to wake him from one of his episodes. Yesterday, he’d pinned me against the wall, his eyes completely black, until something inside him finally snapped back to normal.

At first, I thought it was a one-time thing. A nightmare, from the loss he had suffered. But then it happened again. And again. Each time, his loss of control was worse, and each time, it took him longer to come back to himself. By the time he came back to his senses, I would either be breathless, pinned down, or sprawled across the floor with grazed knees and scraped elbows.

Still, I stayed. I told myself that he just needed time, that this wasn’t him, not really. How much more could I take before I became too broken to fix?

That was why tonight, I was hoping we could do something intimate. See a movie, hangout in front of the fireplace. Something that would help reconnect our bond. If I could do that, then my wolf could heal him slowly.

The front door finally opened and he walked in. I rose to my feet, greeting him with a small hopeful smile. “Welcome home.”

He nodded, managing a small smile. “Thank you.”

It wasn’t much, but it was something.

I lowered my gaze, thinking he would continue to the stairs, but to my surprise, he hung back. When I raised my face, I saw him watching me intently.

“How was your day? How was school today?”

His voice was quiet, careful as though he was afraid to speak. My heart lifted slightly. Maybe, just maybe, this was a sign that he was coming back to me.

“It was fine,” I said, keeping my voice light. “School was the usual. I had a quiz in history—pretty sure I aced it.”

Kai gave a small, approving nod. “Good.”

The silence stretched between us, but for the first time in a long time, it wasn’t heavy.

“Go upstairs and change,” I told him. “Dinner will be ready in a few minutes.”

He nodded again and turned toward the stairs, then I heard his feet pause. I turned to face him again. I saw his eyes roaming over my body.

“Are you alright? Did I hurt you so badly? Mom said she had to take you to the hospital. I’m so sorry, Lily.” He lowered his gaze.

“I’m fine, Kai. Don’t worry, now hurry along already. I hate my meals cold.”

He nodded and hurriedly took the stairs, two at a time. Maybe tonight will be different.

But as the minutes ticked by without any sign of him, dread pooled in my stomach.

Something was wrong.

I finished setting the place we would use at the fireplace before making my way upstairs.

"Kai?" I called up the stairs as I walked towards him. Silence.

My feet felt heavy as I climbed the steps, each one bringing me closer to what I feared I’d find. The bedroom door was slightly ajar, spilling dim light into the hallway.

I opened the door slightly to see him sitting on the edge of the bed, his head bowed, his hands gripping the sheets so tightly, his knuckles had turned white.

“Kai?” I called softly, remaining at the doorways.

I took a tentative step forward. “Kai...? Are you okay?”

Still nothing.

"Kai?" My voice trembled slightly. "Dinner’s ready."

No response.

"Kai, please. You need to eat something."

A chill ran down my spine as I noticed the way his body was trembling, his breathing slow and shallow.

“Kai, please, talk to me—”

He lifted his head.

The moment our eyes met, I froze.

His eyes - they were completely black, like liquid darkness had filled them from edge to edge. No white, no iris, just... void.

"K-Kai, it’s me. It’s Lily."

He moved faster than I could track. One moment he was on the bed, the next his hand was around my throat, slamming me into the hallway wall. The impact knocked the breath from my lungs.

"Kai," I gasped, clawing at his hand. "Please... come back to me."

I struggled, kicking at his legs, trying to break free. “Kai, it’s me! You have to stop!”

For a fraction of a second, something flickered in his expression. But then, just as quickly, it was gone.

He threw me to the ground.

I landed hard, my body slamming against the wooden floor. My elbows scraped against the surface, pain shooting through my limbs. My mind screamed at me to move, to run—but my body was weak, trembling from both fear and exertion.

Kai stepped toward me, his presence looming. He crouched down, his fingers wrapping around my throat. Not enough to choke me, but enough to make it clear that he was no longer in control.

Tears stung my eyes as I reached up, gripping his wrist. “Please,” I choked out. “Come back to me.”

His grip tightened.

I kicked out, managing to break his grip. I stumbled toward the stairs, but his hand caught my hair, yanking me back. Pain exploded through my scalp as he threw me to the ground again.

I tried to crawl away, but he was on me again, flipping me over. Those black eyes stared down at me.

"Kai," I sobbed, "please stop. You’re hurting me."

His hand wrapped around my throat again, squeezing. Stars danced at the edges of my vision. I could feel my consciousness slipping, the world growing dim around the edges

Just as I felt the room begin to spin, a loud crash echoed through the room. A blur of movement, a gust of wind, and suddenly, Kai was ripped away from me.

I gasped, my body slumping as I struggled to stay conscious. Through my hazy vision, I saw a figure standing over me.

Celeste.

Her blue eyes burned with fury as she crouched beside me. “Lily? Can you hear me?”

My vision swam as I tried to focus. Through blurry eyes, I saw Jake , of all people , pinning Kai against the far wall, while Celeste stood between them and me, her hands glowing with silvery light.
