Alpha's Hidden Precious Luna-Chapter 17
Kai POV
The night was quiet, a gentle breeze rustling through the trees as I approached my sister’s house.
My heart pounded in my chest, a mixture of anticipation and nervousness coursing through my veins. I have never done anything like this before – sneaking into a house in the dead of the night to see a girl. But Lily wasn’t just any girl. She was my mate and the pull to be near her was overwhelming.
Also, this was a good opportunity to check on my sister Celeste and my grandparents.
As I reached the front door, I paused, my senses picking up movement inside. I took in a deep breath, my wolf on high alert, until I opened the door and ushered myself in. Celeste stood there, one hand on the toilet’s door knob and her eyes wide with surprise.
“Kai?” then as if remembering my title she corrected herself quickly. “Alpha,” she whispered, quickly bowing her head. “I...I wasn’t expecting you. What brings you here?”
“I came to check on you and Grandpa and Grandma. How are they?” I asked feeling the air shift awkwardly. Celeste’s earnest gaze wasn’t helping.
“You saw them yesterday and earlier today and I’m fine... I guess,” she cocked her head towards me. “Are you alright, Kai?”
I nodded curtly, stepping into the living room. “Which room is Lily in?” I asked, my voice taking a low and urgent tone as I looked at every other thing in the room except her.
She hesitated for a moment, clearly caught off guard by my unexpected question. But she knew better than to question me. “She’s upstairs, second door on the left,” she replied softly “But she’ll be asleep by now, I’m sure. She seemed exhausted,”.
Without another word, ignoring my sister’s words, I made my way up the stairs, my footsteps silent on the carpeted steps. I paused outside Lily’s door, my hand hovering over the knob. For a moment, doubt crept in. Was this right? Should I be here, invading her privacy like this?
But the pull of my mate was too strong to resist. Slowly, carefully, I turned the knob and eased the door open careful not to make a sound or do anything that will awaken her. The moment I stepped into the room; Lily’s scent enveloped me. It was sweet, intoxicating and uniquely her. I felt Hud – my wolf surge forward, eager to claim what was ours.
It took every ounce of considerable willpower and years of discipline combined for me to hold back. To not bound across the room and take her in my arms.
Instead, I approached the bed slowly, my eyes adjusting to the darkness. Lily lay peacefully asleep. There was pure exhaustion on her face as she snored quietly. Her curly hair fanned out on the pillow, gone was the anxiety and tension that had filled her all day.
I felt my breath catch in my throat. She was beautiful – more beautiful than I had allowed myself to admit during the day.
Carefully, I knelt beside the bed, my eyes roaming over her features, trying to imagine what it would feel like when we could finally bear each other’s mark. Without thinking, I reached out, my fingers hovered lightly over her cheeks as I caressed her. Brushing wisps of stray hair from her face.
She stirred slightly but didn’t wake. I found myself imagining how those eyes would look gazing up at me, filled with trust and affection.
“Hud, can you feel her wolf?” I asked Hud, curious about the connection that was supposed to exist between mates.
Hud’s response was immediate and filled with disappointment. “No, I can’t sense anything,”.
I frowned, there were only two possibilities Hud couldn’t feel her wolf. It was either her wolf was as deeply asleep as she was, given that she had greatly exhausted herself for two days straight. The second possibility was that she didn’t have a wolf at all. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
The second thought sent a chill through me, but I quickly pushed it aside. Of course, she had a wolf. She was my mate. It had to be the first option.
But why couldn’t she sense me? And why hadn’t she seemed to recognize me as her mate when we first met? At first, I thought she was playing hard to get but she couldn’t at all. The questions played over and over in my mind, making me worry more and nearly masking the joy of being near her.
I leaned in closer, inhaling deeply. Her scent filled my nostrils, stirring something primal within me. I wanted to kiss her, to taste her lips, to trail my mouth down the curve of her neck where my mark would look so beautiful. Hud howled within me, urging me to claim her.
But I held back again. My hands clenched into fists at my sides. I couldn’t – wouldn’t – take advantage of her like this. When I finally kiss Lily, I want her to be awakened, to want it as much as I did.
Still, the urge to mark her, to leave my scent on her, was almost overwhelming now.
“I know you want this as much as she does, Hud but you have to be patient. When her wolf awakens, she will find us,”.
“If she doesn’t have a wolf, there’s no way she can notice you, Alpha,” Hud said quietly.
The words sent a sharp pain through my chest. “What if she can’t feel the mate bond?” I wondered desperately “What if she never recognizes me as her mate?”
The possibility was too painful to contemplate. Instead, I shook my head, trying to fight the doubts that threatened to consume me and focused instead on her face, on the gentle way her chest rose and fell as she slept.
“I’ll find a way,” I whispered, so softly “I’ll make you see that we belong together, Lily. I promise,”.
With great reluctance, I rose to my feet. I had already stayed longer than I should have. As much as it pained me to leave her side, I knew I couldn’t linger. It wasn’t right and it certainly wasn’t the way I wanted to start our relationship.
As I turned to go, she shifted in her sleep, a small whimper escaping her lips. I froze as the lower part of my body jumped with excitement. For a moment, I thought she might wake up, catching me in her room, but she simply turned onto her side, her face peaceful once more.
I let out a breath, embarrassed at the thing jutting out of my trousers. I need to find out why exactly she cannot see me as her mate. Moon knows how long I’d be able to endure the desire coursing through me at her sight.
I took one last, long look at her, then with a heavy heart, slipped out of the room as silently as I had entered.
