Chapter 281: 281-Burning With Jealousy

Iris:

I wanted to give her a befitting response, but then I remembered that Markus wanted to surprise Zoe. If I told Lady Vivian anything, she would run straight to Zoe and ruin it.

So I simply shook my head at her, giving her a silent warning not to go there.

"I’m asking you something," she insisted as she watched me try to get past her.

Finally, I turned to her, nodded, and gave her a tired look.

"We live in the same house. Can’t we talk to each other?" I said casually, trying not to sound overly defensive or rude.

She looked at me arrogantly, as if she were judging me far too harshly.

"What now? Should I go, or did you get your answer?" I asked tiredly.

At last, she stepped aside, and I walked past her.

When I returned to the room, I saw that Kash was already ready to leave for the office.

"What happened?" he asked when he noticed I had been staring at him for a while.

"Nothing," I responded tiredly.

"No. If something happened, tell me. Don’t complain later that I didn’t ask," he said, turning fully to face me.

"What is your problem? Do you have a problem with me?" I asked, walking up to him and staring at his face.

"No, I don’t have any problem with him. Anyway, I’m taking Lara to the hospital," he replied.

As soon as he said that, I gave him a warning look.

"You’re doing this just to annoy me, aren’t you?" I asked.

Kash shook his head, combing his hair.

"What do you think? That I carry out my responsibilities just to show you? I’m an Alpha King. I know my responsibilities."

As he said that, he set his brush down and moved forward. The moment he opened the door, I saw Lara standing outside.

"I hope you weren’t listening to our conversation," I said to her, a slight edge in my tone.

She looked offended, but she was already winning today. She was going out with Kash, of course.

She was far too calm.

"Shall we, Kash?" she asked dramatically.

I looked at her. She was going for medical tests, yet she looked more dressed for a picnic.

She had all her makeup on and was wearing a beautiful blue dress. Her hair was curled neatly. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

"Yes, let’s go," Kash replied to her, then walked out, ignoring me.

I stood there, lost in my thoughts.

After pacing around my room for a while and calming myself down, I finally stepped outside.

I had to fill out the children’s forms. Since Kash had yet another responsibility to attend to, I had to sit and complete them alone.

I was busy with the forms when my phone started beeping. When I checked it, I saw Markus’s text for the first time.

That was odd.

As soon as I opened it, the message confused me.

Markus: Can you step outside for a moment? Don’t let anyone see you.

Me: Why secretly? What happened?

I replied to his message, then finished filling out the forms and went to my room to leave them there.

When I came back outside, another text from him had already arrived.

Markus: Hurry. It’s important. Kash and Lara will be back soon. You know it’ll be hard to do this secretly once they return.

I nodded to myself, realizing he was right. If Lara came back, she would interfere so much that she would eventually figure out the surprise.

Me: Alright. I’m coming to the back. You be there too.

I replied.

Then I stepped outside.

As I walked toward the back, I saw him holding a catalog filled with beautiful diamond necklaces.

"Which one of these would look special?" he asked, flipping through the pages.

I stared at him in disbelief.

"Don’t you even know what kind of necklaces your wife likes?" I asked.

He frowned.

"I do, but I’ve bought those kinds for her many times. Now please help me," he insisted, almost pleading.

At least he was trying to do something for her.

"This one. She’ll like something elegant, but not too showy," I said, pointing at one of them.

"Perfect. Okay then, I’ll show you the venue later. I can’t wait for her to find out that I’m really taking our relationship seriously now," he said.

As he spoke, he hugged the catalog to his chest.

I rolled my eyes, hoping he would not ruin it this time.

After talking for a while, just as we were about to come out from the back, Kash’s car suddenly pulled in.

"Oh no. If they saw us here together, Lara would definitely start questioning what we were talking about," Markus uttered in urgency.

The moment he realized it, he started running from there. Kash and Lara had already stepped out of the car, and I was certain they saw Markus running from behind me. Kash immediately removed his glasses, while Lara narrowed her eyes and then placed her hand over her lips, as if she were shocked.

"You guys came back early," I said, walking toward the car.

"Why did Markus run off like that?" Kash asked, pointing in the direction Markus had gone.

"He didn’t run," I replied a little awkwardly. "Anyway, is everything alright?"

Kash looked at me with dry eyes. Then he glanced at Lara and looked back at me before simply nodding and walking away.

He did not say much, nor did he seem welcoming. Ever since Luca was arrested, a lot had changed between us, and it was changing rapidly.

I was sure Lara had noticed. Kash’s mother probably had too.

"Seems like you’ve exhausted him," Lara commented, making me fold my arms across my chest and stare at her in judgment.

"Well, that’s because I don’t know how to act clingy like someone here," I taunted her.

My eyes dropped to her stomach. She did not have a visible belly yet because she was still early in her pregnancy.

But every time she looked at me, she would start rubbing her hand over her stomach.

"Everything is fine. The doctor said I’m much healthier now. And Kash promised he’ll take very good care of me," Lara said.

The smile on her face, the way she spoke, made my skin burn with jealousy.

I was sure she saw that flicker on my face, because she chuckled and walked past me.
