Chapter 157: Chapter 157 I’m Sorry

"You know it all?" Klaus stared at her. "Listen to me, love." 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

"If it weren’t for the fact that I just met your subordinate and he told me about it, how long were you planning to keep this from me?" Emily’s tone was tinged with anger. "Were you going to tell me when you got to the battlefield, or what?"

"I was going to tell you about it when I got home," Klaus explained. "Trust me."

"Klaus, you remember promising to consult with me before making any decisions, and you said you would respect my opinion. But why this time...?"

"Fighting a war is a man’s business," Klaus interrupted her. "Besides, I told you a long time ago that we were going to war with the West. It’s just that now the time has come sooner, and I don’t understand why you’re so upset."

"Because I care about you," Emily pushed Klaus away, but he didn’t budge. Emily angrily continued, "My man is going to war tomorrow, and I don’t know anything about it."

"I’ll be in the pack tomorrow, and Marx will go to the front to command the campaign," Klaus tried to get closer to Emily, but she took two steps back for every step he took.

"That’s not the point," Emily became emotional, her voice trembling slightly, tears glistening in her eyes. "The point is, why didn’t you tell me before making every decision? I’m your partner!"

Emily’s long hair danced in the autumn wind, as turbulent as the waves in her heart. She bit her lip and clenched her hands into fists, as if trying to restrain her emotions.

"I’m sorry. I promise there won’t be a next time," Klaus’s voice was deep and sincere. He stopped, no longer trying to get closer to Emily, just looking at her quietly, his eyes full of apology and love.

"It’s my fault. I should have consulted with you before making a decision. But this time the situation was urgent, and I didn’t have time to think too much about it," he added.

"Your apology has become meaningless," tears streamed down the corners of Emily’s eyes. "You never think about my feelings. You have no idea how much I care about you. Klaus, you’re such a selfish person."

"What can I do to make it up to you?" Klaus almost pleaded. "Don’t cry, love. It hurts to see you cry."

"Are you really going to be hurt?" Emily smiled bitterly. "I always have nightmares when I learn that you’re going to fight on the front line. I dream that you’re standing in front of me, covered in blood. I dream that I’ve lost you. Do you know how sad I am every time I wake up and I can’t see you? Klaus, you always put yourself in danger, and sometimes you even act like you don’t care about your life. But I do. I care even more about you than you do about yourself."

Emily turned away, and Klaus tried to catch up, but Emily turned her head and glared at him. She warned him, "If you dare to follow me, I swear I won’t speak to you again."

Klaus stood still, frozen in place. The autumn wind blew through, ruffling his hair and chilling his heart. Emily’s tears and angry eyes kept flashing in his mind, piercing his heart like sharp thorns.

Klaus clenched his fists tightly. He wanted to shout Emily’s name, to tell her how much he loved her and how much he cared about her. But he knew it was too late to say anything. He could only stand there in silence, watching Emily disappear into the night.

It didn’t take long for Klaus to slowly shuffle towards the house they shared. When Klaus reached the bottom of the stairs, he involuntarily paused. He fished a box of cigarettes out of his pocket, pulled one out, and lit it.

The faint glow of the fire flickered in the darkness, and smoke curled up in tendrils. Klaus leaned against the wall, staring blankly into the distance.

Time passed in silence, and Klaus remained frozen in place, smoking cigarette after cigarette.

Klaus’s eyes grew darker and more troubled. He glanced up at their room, and when he saw the warm light spilling from the familiar window, a tumult of emotions welled up within him. The light seemed like a silent beckoning, offering a glimmer of comfort to his weary heart.

He stood at the bottom of the stairs for a long time, as if trying to etch the tranquility of this moment into his memory. Finally, he stubbed out his cigarette butt and slowly made his way into the house.

Klaus’s footsteps echoed through the empty hallway, each step feeling like it landed on his own heart. He climbed the stairs slowly and heavily, one by one. When he reached the door to their room, he hesitated. His hand rose and fell several times before he finally knocked softly.

There was silence within the room, and Klaus’s heart pounded in his throat. He didn’t know if Emily would open the door to him, or how she would greet him.

Time seemed to solidify, and every second stretched on endlessly. Finally, the door creaked open. Emily stood in the doorway, her eyes red and puffy, tears streaming down her face.

Klaus looked at her, his eyes filled with guilt and love. They stared at each other, and a thousand words were conveyed in that silent gaze. The air seemed to thicken, and though the distance between them was close, it felt like an unbridgeable gap.

"Hey, I..." Klaus’s voice was hoarse, and his eyes pleaded for forgiveness.

He stood outside the door, unsure of what to say. After a brief silence, Emily spoke, "Come in."

Klaus felt a surge of joy in his heart, and at that moment, it was like a warm ray of sunlight piercing through the darkness within him. When he looked up, all he saw was Emily’s back turning away from him. The back seemed resolute, yet there was a hint of imperceptible softness in it.

So he stepped into the room and softly closed the door behind him. There was a delicate atmosphere in the room, familiar yet strange at the same time.

"I’m sorry," Klaus’s voice was low, tinged with guilt. He stood there like a child who had made a mistake, awaiting forgiveness from an adult.

He wanted to approach Emily, but he was afraid of provoking her anger again. So he stood quietly, waiting for Emily’s response. The air seemed to solidify, and every second stretched on endlessly.

After a while, he heard Emily exhale deeply, and she turned to face him. "So, what’s your plan?" Her voice carried an echo of endless sorrow and helplessness that seemed to resonate in the silent room.

Emily’s eyes were a complex mix of worry, confusion, and subtle emotions. She lifted her chin slightly, her gaze locked onto Klaus, awaiting his answer.
