Chapter 223: Chapter 223.-Have you ever loved me? Even for a moment

Klaus quickly removed the wireless communications device from his body and dropped it on the ground, then removed his black combat jacket to get the weight off his body.

"What are you waiting for?" Klaus stared at Elijah, who stood motionless, his muscles tensed like a cheetah ready to pounce on its prey.

" Have you forgotten how to fight?" Klaus’s tone was defiant.

"I haven’t forgotten.." Elijah’s voice was low and husky. The next second he was darting at Klaus like an arrow from a string, with an almost insane speed.

Klaus’s pupils contracted suddenly, but he did not flinch in the least, and the moment Elijah lunged like a wild beast his body reacted instinctively. He sidestepped violently, and with a movement as swift as lightning, almost eluded Elijah’s attack. At the same time, he did not hesitate to swing.

Elijah swung back-handed at Klaus’s ribs. His fist collided with Klaus’s body with a dull thud.

Klaus only felt a chill in his ribs as he stifled a grunt and twisted his body violently. His body looked as if it had no bones in it, and he avoided the fatal blow with incredible agility. Immediately afterwards, without a moment’s hesitation, he raised his leg and struck a powerful sweeping blow at the waist of Elijah.

The two men were caught in an instant of thrilling life-and-death combat, every movement as rapid as possible, every attack containing the determination to kill the other. The muffled sound of fists striking flesh, the heavy breathing, and the wind-like sound raised by the rapid movement, were all mingled together, and seemed to be the death-knell of Death. It was as if the world around them had vanished, leaving the two of them fighting frantically on the edge of life and death.

Elijah’s eyes grew fiercer and fiercer, and seeing a fleeting break, he lunged violently forward, his arms spread out like a great net, to lock Klaus by the throat.

Klaus felt for an instant the aura of death in his face. He blocked violently with his arms, his muscles bulging high like a solid shield. Then he wriggled and broke from Elijah’s iron grasp, and at the same instant his knee went up and struck him squarely in the stomach!

Then Klaus reveals his sharp claws and stabs Elijah in the stomach. A fountain of blood gushes from Elijah’s abdomen and spills onto the floor, creating a blinding stain.

Elijah fell to the ground, his body shaking violently. He put out his hand and tried to grab something.

At that moment a white figure appeared in the afterglow of Klaus. Unconsciously he turned his head and, peering through the smoke and dust, saw Emily standing silently outside the house.

" Emily..." Elijah’s voice was as faint as the dying flame of a candle. With difficulty he raised his head and looked straight at Emily. The light in his eyes flickered at the sight of her, as of a dying man who has caught the last straw.

" Do you... ever love me?" Every time Elijah spat out a word, it was as if he had used all the strength of his body.

Emily was just standing still, with a complicated look in her eyes. There was pity, there was hatred, there was an undetectable sense of relief. The blood on the ground ran like a meandering stream, slowly trickling down to Emily’s feet, the bright red color eating away, bit by bit, at the whiteness of the wedding dress.

" Even for a moment?" Elijah asked again.

" No." Emily’s voice was as cold as the wind. Her eyes did not flicker, but met Elijah’s, as if she would burn the answer into his soul, severing the last thread of tie between them.

Elijah’s eyes filled with despair and anguish as he heard the answer. His body shook violently, as if he had received the deadliest blow, and the light in his eyes dimmed for an instant. His lips trembled a little, as if he would like to say something, but could make no sound.

Life at this moment faded like a candle in the wind.

"Emily." Klaus darted forward recklessly, his eyes full of worry and pain. His arms were outstretched, and he clasped Emily. The force was as if he wanted to rub her into his own life.

" It’s okay, it’s over." Klaus said softly.

As if touched by a taboo, however, Emily gently but firmly pushed Klaus away. Her eyes were cold and detached, as if she were looking at a stranger with whom she had no connection, without the slightest fluctuation of emotion.

Klaus froze for a few seconds, his eyes flashing with shock and pain, as if he could not believe what was happening before him. Then he slowly removed his mask to reveal his face.

" It’s me, Klaus." Klaus’ voice held a hint of anticipation as he attempted to jog Emily’s memory, " I’m your mate."

" Klaus... Klaus..." Emily repeated Klaus’s name, her brow slightly furrowed, her eyes betraying a hint of perplexity and bewilderment, as if she were trying to penetrate a mist, to find in the depths of memory all that was connected with the name.

Suddenly Emily’s face took on a pained look. She covered her head tightly with her hand, and her mouth kept chanting, "Klaus... Klaus..."

" It’s okay, Emily." Klaus hugged Emily tightly again, trying to give her comfort, "It’s okay even if you don’t remember me. Don’t torture yourself."

" My head..." Emily shrieked uncontrollably, with the shrillness of a wounded beast.

" It hurts..." Her face was contorted with pain, her forehead was bruised, and the cold perspiration was pouring from it like rain.

Then Emily’s body fell slowly, her legs seemed to lose their support, and her whole body was like a fading leaf. At the moment when she was about to fall, Klaus hastily reached out his hand and clasped Emily’s body.

" Emily, are you okay?" Klaus called out to her.

But the only response to Klaus was a heart-rending silence. The air around seemed frozen, and only the low breathing of Emily rang in Klaus’s ears, and each breath seemed to rend his heart.
