Alpha's Secret Bride-Chapter 92: The Golden Key to a Buried Past
"Sit," she gestured towards one of the Lawson chairs that were in the sitting chamber. She sat down too and kept scrutinizing Emma in admiration.
"I have come to say thank you for the picture and the letter you gave my moonally. They really mean a lot to me."
"You really look like your mother," she grinned. "How is she?"
"I don’t know where she is," she said sadly, and lowered her gaze and she smirked.
"I read her letters several times. She desperately wants to see you."
"I want to see her too."
"She is in Belarus," she said and stared into space as if she was trying to recall other information she saw in any of the letters she read. Brooklyn and Emma kept quiet. "Vitebsk: Lenina."
"Can you recall the state?" She asked and she shook her head.
"What happened? Did she give you up for adoption and suddenly realize she had made a mistake?" She asked.
"It’s a long story, but I’m going to cut it short," she said and began to narrate everything her mate told her.
"Honestly, the wolves that did this need to be arrested! What the hell!! Now I understand why she is so desperate. You don’t separate a mother and her pup! The bond between them is so strong!" She yelled and wiped a tear that narrowly escaped from her eyes.
"If I had known, I wouldn’t have burnt the letters," she said with a down tone after a few minutes of speechlessness. She was quite sad. "My late mate saved the first letter we received when we moved into the packhood newly in his metal safe box, but I haven’t been able to open the drawer since he died."
"Why?"
"I forgot the unlock code."
"Did you try to contact the company that made the safe box?" Brooklyn asked.
"Yes, but they closed twenty winters ago. That is ten winters after my mate purchased the safe box."
"Alright,"
"How often does she send letters?" She asked.
"Her letter comes every full moon. I have received about ten letters from her this winter. The eleventh envelope contained your pictures. I guessed she was tired of writing." She stood up angrily as if she was mad at herself for destroying useful information.
"I’ll be right back! I... put one letter in a book but I didn’t know the particular book."
"Would you mind if I assist you?" Emma asked politely. She beckoned her to go with her. Brooklyn stood up and followed them.
The old she-wolf took them to a chamber that previously served as their store chamber and pointed at a bookshelf that housed more than three thousand old and dusty books. The chamber was quite dark because of the smudges that covered the windows. She strode towards the window and opened it and Emma almost fainted.
A thick layer of dust built up on the floor and the shelves. Her small footprints were all over the floor. She looked up, there were cobwebs in all corners. A pile of newspapers that was behind the door was also covered with dust.
Brooklyn fixed her gaze on her, trying to talk to her with her eyes. She was so determined to ransack the chamber, so she ignored her.
"I put one of the letters I received from her in one of the books, but I didn’t know the particular book."
"I’m going to open all the books," she smiled, and moved towards the bookshelf.
"You really love your mother," she smiled and tilted her head. She returned her smile with a nod. She love her mother, but her mate’s birthright, which he was about to give up, was her biggest motivator.
"I’ll be in the sitting chamber," she said before leaving the chamber.
Brooklyn leaned on the wall, folded her arms across her chest, and fixed her eyes on Emma. She looked at her, turned her head, and faced the bookshelf. She took the first book out and began to flip the pages. Brooklyn sighed, walked down to the extreme, and took a book out.
"Thank you," Emma smiled. She ignored her and began to open the book. Brooklyn screamed, dropped the book she was holding on the floor, and jumped up.
"What is it?" She ran towards her. They slowly leaned over to see the object on the floor clearly. It was a dried lizard. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
"What is it?" A young he-wolf that would be about thirteen winters old asked, standing behind the window. They looked at him and ignored him.
"Emma, I can’t do this!"
"Brooklyn, please, help me."
"No, let’s wait for the December letter."
"Please"
"Emma, no!"
She moved over to her side and continued opening the books. Brooklyn sighed after staring at her for a few minutes.
"If you had supported your mate’s decision, the king wouldn’t have given you two moons to find your mother!" She said and began to open the books again. "Emma, you are very headstrong! You follow your own ideas all the time rather than listen to me or your mate! I have never been able to persuade you to do something differently and I hate it!"
"I’m a changed person, trust me."
"You don’t have to tell me you have changed; just allow me to see the change!"
"Brooklyn, Brandon has sacrificed a lot of things for us already. He sacrificed even his looks! Emotional stress and academic stress dried him up."
"You have always wanted him to lose weight, didn’t you?"
"Yes, but not through emotional and academic stress! Please, I want to do this and I need your help."
Brooklyn sighed again and continued searching. They kept sneezing as they opened the books. Before they knew it, the whole floor was covered with books they had checked.
"Ten minutes past six, Emma. Are you sure you don’t want to go home?"
"Let’s search for twenty more minutes."
"Emma, I’m tired! I need to rest," Brooklyn said, and moved away from the bookshelf. However, a white rope she sighted in a book lured her back. She took the book out and opened it. Lo, it was a key, made of twenty-four-carat gold. Emma climbed over the books that clustered on the floor as she walked towards her.
She took a glance at the book where the key was found and noticed there was a six-digit number written on a piece of paper.
"Are you sure this is not the code she is looking for?" She asked and lifted the paper. She ran out of the chamber hurriedly. Brooklyn quickly dropped the book and the key and ran after her.
She showed the she-wolf the piece of paper. She took it from her but was not excited. She lost hope immediately.
"This is the code, but I have already lost the spare key he gave me when he was sick."
"We found the key also," she said with a fast pitch, beckoning Brooklyn to come quickly.
"Where is it?" The she-wolf asked with surprise.
"Brooklyn, give me the key."
"I left it in the chamber," she said, and ran back to the chamber. Emma waited for a few minutes, but she didn’t see Brooklyn and the key. She lifted her gown and went back to the chamber. She saw Brooklyn scattering the books that were on the floor. She was surprised because she dropped the key on top of the books and ran after her.
"Are you looking for this?" A young he-wolf asked. They quickly turned their heads and saw the thirteen-winter-old wolf holding the key by the rope. Apparently, he came in through the window, picked the key up, and jumped out again. Brooklyn quickly jumped through the window and ran after him. Emma was wearing a long gown so she couldn’t jump. She used the door immediately.
After a few minutes of standing in front of the pack house, she saw Brooklyn and one of the guards that came with her coming towards her. Her lips twirled as soon as she saw the key in Brooklyn’s hand. The old she-wolf’s face broke into an unconscious smile.
She led them to her late husband’s bedchamber. The chamber was as dusty as the chamber where the bookshelf was. She slotted the key in the right hole and spasmodically entered the six-digit number on the piece of paper. The key made a three-sixty-degree turn and the box opened. The terrific thudding of Emma’s heart was so loud.
They sat on the dusty floor and began to go through the documents. She saw a letter from Emily Hale. The letter was sent to Daniel Greens and they began to read.

Dear Daniel,
Compliment of the season. This is the 215th letter I’m sending to you. How is my Emma doing? How is Scarlet? I hope they are alright.
I’m not happy that you have not replied any of my letters. I know it is because of the silver I owe you and her father’s identity I have refused to disclose to you.
Please call me, I want to talk to my pup and wish her a happy birth moon cycle. It’s her fifteenth birthday already. I will also tell you who her father is when you call...looking forward to your call.
Emily Hale
Tears covered their eyes and none of them said anything. She stood up slowly and dusted her gown.
"Thank you.....," Emma pursed.
"Mrs. Bauer," the she-wolf smiled and nodded.
"I hope you find her."
"Sure, I will. I’ll send my domestic staff to tidy your house up.
"Alright," she grinned, but Emma couldn’t return her smile. There’s more to uncover.
