Chapter 80: one room

The exams went on without any issues, and by the time it was late noon, everyone had battled already, and those that had passed the exams were seated in the stands.

Amongst them were mostly nobles, and a few commoners. That much was expected—nobles always had better training and better bloodlines.

Now that the exams were done, the instructor walked to the center of the arena and began speaking.

"All of you that stand here are the best of the best. You went against the odds and came out on top.

You have all passed and now you’ll be admitted into the academy. As of today, you’ll all be set in temporary dorm rooms until your ranks are determined.

Those strips on your hands have secretly been grading you and have been coming up with your rank out of two hundred and fifty.

These ranks will decide what class you will get and what treatment you will receive. All that will be talked about more in depth in the orientation that will hold tomorrow.

For now, the girls will follow my fellow instructor who’s waiting outside, and the boys will follow me. We will take you to the dorms you’ll stay the night in," he said and started leaving the arena.

Immediately, everyone got on their feet and also started leaving the stands to follow the man.

’And just like this, I am in the academy, and it has only been less than a month since I came to this world,’ Riven thought as he walked out.

In the VIP stands, the headmistress got on her feet and walked away as well. Raphael stood and watched the students leave, he folded his arms with a serious expression on his face.

"What’s got you so bothered?" she stopped and asked.

"Hmm, I don’t know why, but I feel that this year of the academy is going to be a very special one. I might just stick around and see what happens," he said, dropping his hands and walking away as well.

The instructor led them to a simple two-storey building that had about sixty rooms or so.

"This is the Genesis dorm, and it will also be your first dorm for a day. But for those that rank the lowest amongst the boys, you will stay in this dorm room.

For today, some makeshift beds have been prepared to ensure that a room contains at least four people. There is no specific way to decide where you will stay today, so whatever room has space, sleep there," the man said and then opened the door of the dorm.

The boys immediately rushed into the dorm, pushing and pulling, choosing rooms like it was a battle. Riven couldn’t be part of that pushing; he knew that the rooms would be enough, and so he waited for many others to go before he started going.

But it seemed he wasn’t the only one that had that idea—the elf from the elf twins also waited, the prince waited as well, Lance and Noel too, and a few other boys.

Now that most of the boys had rushed in, Riven finally took a step in, but as he did, he felt a palm on his shoulder. He turned around and looked at who touched him.

Lance stood there, a cold look in his eyes. You could tell that he heavily disliked Riven, but Riven couldn’t care less about all that—what he wanted now was to get inside and rest.

"What do you want?" Riven asked.

"I want to have a talk with you. Let’s share a room," Lance said.

Riven looked at him, confusion on his face, but then he recalled what had happened and why this hero would be asking to talk to him.

He cracked a small smile. "Fine, let’s have a room together," Riven said. He wanted to know what this dude had to say.

Noel heard what was happening and immediately walked up to them. "If you are going to be in a room together, then I’ll be there as well," he said, his voice not leaving room for any discussion.

"Ohhhh? If you three are staying together, I feel it’s best if I went with you three as well," Robert walked up and spoke.

"Your Highness, you shouldn’t bother yourself with this one," Lance said.

"But you bothered yourself with him, Lance. That means he is worth it, so I would love to see what you three will discuss," Robert said. His voice was calm, but it carried a weight that Lance could not argue against.

’So that’s what the authority of a ruler looks like. It seems Robert is already preparing to become the king at such a young age,’ Riven thought.

"You all can do whatever you want. I’m choosing my room," Riven said and walked up the stairs. He walked to one of the doors at the far end of the corridor and opened the door.

Luckily enough, it was empty, with two bunk beds prepared for them. He walked in and climbed up the bunk bed on the right and stayed at the top.

A few seconds later, the other three walked into the room. Lance looked at Riven at the top. He frowned, pissed by Riven’s nonchalant behavior.

He picked the lower bunk on the left, and Robert took the top. The room was strikingly empty—there was no furniture aside from the beds.

There was a toilet door and a light crystal on the wall, one window, and simple curtains draped over it. That was all there was to the room.

The room would probably be changed tomorrow when it was time for the real assigning of dorms. The proper beds and furniture would be assigned for sure.

Riven lay in his bed while staring at the ceiling. He decided it was time he checked his system and see how much time he had until his next trial.

He pulled out the stats screen immediately.

[Next Trial: 6 Days]

He stared at the number of days left, his eyes wide from disbelief. He didn’t know that he had wasted so much time. It was almost time for the next trial.

’Shit, six days is not a lot of time. I seriously thought I had more time.’

Knowing that the trial was so close made him nervous and anxious. He didn’t know what to expect, but he had a feeling that it would be anything but simple.

The last one had been life-threatening, and it had him do something that would normally be seen as crazy—jumping off a cliff.

’I wonder what the trial will be this time. I hope it’s something my current strength can at least handle.’

"Hey," Lance called out to him. He sat on the edge of his bed and looked at Riven. Noel and Riven both turned their attention to him. The prince, who was on the top bunk, also looked down, his head hanging low.

"What is it?" Riven asked.

"I want you to answer me truthfully. When you ran and left the dungeon that day, did you do it to drag the Wyvern out, or did you do it to escape?" Lance asked.

’Hmm? Look at him being the hero. He wants to be sure that I didn’t do it to save myself. He wants to be certain before he places his hate on me. Honestly, it’s a bit late for that, but at least he managed to ask in the end.

But why would I even make life easier for him? Nah, I’m going to make him pissed,’ Riven decided.

"Isn’t it a bit too late to ask that question? After all, you made your judgment at that moment and you didn’t think of the possibility that I did it to save others.

You made your own image of what happened, and you used that image to initially judge me. And quite frankly, I don’t care what you think about it. If I did it for my selfish reasons and to escape, that’s my problem, because I’m not in charge of anyone’s life.

If I did it to save everyone, that’s still my business, and I don’t want a thank you or a fake smile of appreciation. I did what I did, so everyone should leave me be. It was my choice and my action," Riven said and turned away.

"What is your problem? I’m simply trying to make things right, and make sure no one has the wrong ideas about you," Lance said, a vein popping on his neck.

"Screw their perception about me. It wouldn’t be the first time that people looked at me with ill will," Riven said.
