Chapter 103: Chapter 103 Strange Creature (Bonus)

For a brief second, everyone allowed themselves to believe that perhaps life could still carve beauty out of ruin.

But even as Laurel watched the newborn being cleaned and wrapped carefully in a white cloth, a faint unease crept up her spine. The woman on the bed had grown strangely quiet, her breathing was too even, and calm after such exertion.

Susanne reached for her baby. "Let me hold her." She said with a cracked voice.

The nurse glanced at Laurel, but she gave them an approving nod.

The moment the child rested in her mother’s arms, tears trailed down Susanne’s cheeks. Her fingers shakily caressed her baby’s face. She lowered her head pressing her lips on the baby’s forehead.

"You are the best thing that has happened to me in a long time," Susanne muttered under her breath.

The nurse stood close to her, glancing at Susanne and the baby before glancing back at the beeping machine.

"Her blood pressure is normal, and her vitals are good." The nurse said.

Laurel let out a breath of relief. Her smile widened seeing the mother and child.

However, a second later Susanne’s body swayed backward, and the nurse beside her quickly supported her.

"We will take the baby and run a test on her. And you are very weak now and won’t be able to breastfeed her. We will give her baby formula, when you feel better we will bring her back to you." The nurse with short brown hair said with a smile.

Susanne nodded her head weakly, her eyes fluttering in tiredness. She weakly handed the baby to the nurse.

"I thought you said her vitals were good?" Laurel asked the nurse who read the result earlier.

"Yes they were good moments ago, I don’t know why they are dropping sharply now." The nurse said with a frown.

Laurel walked closer to the machine, she quickly scribbled prescriptions on a paper, and the doses. "Get this from the storage and give it to her, it will stabilize her condition."

The nurse nodded without hesitation, and she immediately rushed out of the room. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

Laurel walked closer to Susanne. "You’ll be fine, and everything will be alright. I will go with the nurse to run some tests on your daughter, I’ll be back in a couple of minutes." Laurel patted the back of her hand.

Susanne smiled weakly at Laurel with a nod. "Thank you."

Laurel returned her smile before walking out of the room, what none of them knew was that things would not go as they planned.

The baby was carried into another room for testing as protocol demanded. After taking the baby’s blood and other samples they needed, they put her in a transparent crib.

Laurel stared at the baby with mixed feelings. Her eyes trailed along every little movement she made, and a smile unknowingly crept on her lips.

"I never knew you liked children." The nurse beside her said with an intrigued smile.

"Why would you think so?" Laurel asked, slightly taken aback by her assumption.

"Because you looked stern when you were training with the soldiers this morning. No one would imagine you can be this soft and caring." The nurse replied.

Laurel let out a soft laugh. "I’m many things," she said, before straightening up. "I’ll go check on the mother. Have you taken test samples from the man?"

"Yes, but the test is being carried out by the doctors." The nurse replied.

"Look over the child, I’ll be back once I confirm everything is fine with the mother."

The nurse nodded, and with that Laurel headed out of the room, walking back to the room Susanne was in.

"Ling Xuan, I told you, taking them in was not a bad decision. We saved three lives, and I’m so happy we did." She said inwardly, unable to contain her joy.

Seconds went by and Ling Xuan did not utter a word, assuming she was feeling too sour to comment on her words. As she was about to open her mouth to speak again, Ling Xuan’s voice echoed in her head.

"Shh. Listen, something is wrong."

That was when Laurel noticed the subtle change in the air. The corridor outside the labor room had fallen silent, and strangely she felt her heart racing in her chest.

Pushing the feeling away, she walked slowly towards the room.

There had been two medical staff inside when she left, and two soldiers guarding the entrance. Now she could not hear their voices. ’Where did they go?’ She wondered.

She reached for the door, her fingers hovering over the handle as a low sound reached her ears.

However, before she could make out what the sound was, a pair of bloodied hands slammed the little glass on the door, causing Laurel to raise her head.

Her eyes immediately widened in horror, then as if something was pulling the owner of the hands back. The bloodied fingers slid down the glass, then a blood-chilling scream followed.

Laurel felt the sensation of spiders crawling down her spine, and her feet went numb.

Somehow, her hands managed to grab the door handle, pulling it slowly down before pushing the door wide open.

Growl.

An animalistic creature snapped her head towards Laurel the moment the door opened. Its body twisted in an awkward position as it hovered above a body in a nurse’s clothes. The face of the body underneath it was hollowed and blood painted the floor red.

The creature’s blood red eyes stared directly into Laurel’s eyes, with a gaze piercing right through her soul.

The creature’s gown was shredded into pieces, and bodies lay scattered on the floor.

"Susanne?" Laurel whispered under her breath in disbelief, her heart clenched painfully in her chest.

The moment the name left her lips, the creature charged towards her with impeccable speed, shrilling.

Instinctively, Laurel slammed the door shut. Her step faltered backward, and a strange high-pitched sound rang through her head.

"No, no, no." She muttered as her shoulders trembled...

The floor swayed before her. She shook her head trying to clear her mind, but the more the creature shrilled, the more disoriented she was.

The sound of something slamming into the door made Laurel glance back at the door in alarm, and in the blink of an eye, the door broke open.
