Apocalypse: Reborn with a Soul Sync Farming Space System-Chapter 122 Humiliation
Dragging her feet through the ground covered in gravel, Jade felt like her universe was coming to an end. She was thrown out of the fortress...yet. But she saw no difference between the world beyond the walls and the life within the fortress... they were both hell she believed.
Her hands tightened around the broom she was holding, her gaze staring at the chicken’s poop littered all over the floor.
She wore two long plastic gloves that got to her elbows and her plastic boots were high to her knees. Her hair was tied at the back of her neck.
Her muscles in her jaw strained so tightly, that the sound of her gritting teeth ground through the air.
’I’m a Wayne, but I’m reduced to this shallow work! Laurel, you’d better watch your back, because I’m going to make you pay for this... I’m going to make you pay-y-y.’ Her inner thought shattered as a sob escaped her lips.
She stared at the task in front of her as if it were worse than being hunted by whatever monsters that roamed beyond the walls.
Now she didn’t even get to meet her family, not that she missed them that much considering how they betrayed her for not speaking up for her and stopping Laurel from sending her away.
But if she could get in the good graces of Grandpa Wayne and Grandma Wayne, wouldn’t her life be as smooth as butter?
Then, she would be taken away from this torturous task, and be the elegant and powerful woman she once was.
"Start working, the shit is not going to magically disappear if you only stare at it!" The plump woman who was in charge of the poultry yelled.
Jade shivered as she snapped out of her daze. She stared at the plump woman. "Don’t talk to me like that, do you even know who you are talking to?" She glared at her.
The woman boiled from the mere tone of Jade’s voice, it was condescending and not to mention those glaring eyes. "I don’t care who you are! Clean up the shit now!" The stepped closer into Jade’s space, staring directly into her eyes.
But how could Jade let the little pride she had left to quench like that?
She stepped forward, her chest touching the woman’s. "I quit, you can clean up the shits yourself, I’m too classy for this bullshit." Jade tossed the broom to the floor, raising her chin up.
The woman scoffed. "You must be the Wayne who was driven out by the commander." She eyed Jade from up to down. "You are here because of the red mist outside, if you don’t work your ass off, you will be sent out of the fortress before you know it, and frankly, I wonder how long you will last out there before your head gets torn from your body.
Ten minutes? Five? Or maybe two seconds." She said with a smug look plastered on her face. "If I were you I’d pick up that broom and start packing that shit, because one word from me to the commander, you’ll be a sorry ass." Her accent got stronger as she said the last words.
Jade felt fear trickling down her spine. She couldn’t afford to be sent out yet, if she did she would not get the chance to talk to Grandpa Wayne and Grandma Wayne, and she would definitely not get the chance to get back at Laurel.
’For the sake of my future, I’ll bear a little with this humiliation.’
Her throat bobbed up and down, already felt like it was patched with sand. She averted her gaze from the woman’s before walking towards the broom.
She lowered her knees to a squat in an oversized shame as she picked up the broom. She started sweeping the chicken’s waste product without glancing back at the woman.
"That’s more like it." The woman sneered, as she walked away.
Jade could only swallow her shame as she continued sweeping.
Meanwhile in another area inside the fortress.
Vera stared at the ceiling with an exhausted gaze, her hands resting between her legs as she sat on the ground with her back leaning against the wall.
She looked like she had lost her normal vibrancy, and tears streamed down her cheeks slowly.
Meanwhile, Felicia lay on the ground, curled up sobbing.
"It has been more than four days now, and we are still locked up in this tiny room. I smell like sewage and the food is bread and baked beans every single day!...there is no meat... not even a tiny piece of fish... oh Laurel, you really have grown balls now, I regret following you to plead for Jade." Felicia shot Vera a bloodshot glare.
Vera, who had been quiet with an expression like someone tired of everything, finally moved her eyes, turning to Felicia.
Her lips pulled up in anger. "You smell like sewage? And you blame me for pleading for Jade? Wasn’t the whole charade your idea?
Take a good look at me, look at my hair... I haven’t washed it in four days, look at my nails, they are so brittle and dry, and the worst of it all...I’ve been stuck in these single clothes. I haven’t done my skincare routine, my facecare routine..." Vera’s voice broke in sobbing like someone who had lost everything and couldn’t hold it in anymore.
"My face and my body are my assets, how am I supposed to dominate the entertainment industry if I look like a pig? And not to talk about the punch... it was all your fault, Felicia, I shouldn’t have come with you!" She yelled, crashing out.
Felicia sat up, clearly betrayed by the accusation. "No it was your idea because you couldn’t watch Laurel take control of the Fortress while your brother became her lapdog."
Vera’s gaze darkened. "You lie, it was you who didn’t want her to gain control because you are afraid she would pay you back for all the evil you have done to her." She clapped back.
The tension between them thickened to the point where a knife could slice through it.
