Apocalypse: Reborn with a Soul Sync Farming Space System-Chapter 62 Vile Valley
The helicopter headed swiftly to the clearing in the valley.
Once they landed, the maids and the guard immediately started to offload the luggage.
Laurel climbed down, they were in the heart of the valley. Her eyes anxiously searched for one person... Christian Lennox.
"What are you looking for?" Alexander asked, standing next to her.
Laurel glanced at him before looking away. "Nothing." She paused before turning back to him. "You already know your way around here, and you know where to take them to.
I need to check some things in the warehouse. You take care of the family." Laurel said, her eyes glancing towards the Wayne family.
"Okay, are you sure you don’t need my help?" Alexander asked, his eyes showing how eager he was.
"No, thank you," Laurel replied, glancing one last time at them before walking towards the warehouse which was on the outskirts of the valley and closer to the entrance gate.
"You really brought them here." Ling Xuan’s voice echoed in her head, and she sounded anything but pleased.
"Yes," Laurel answered, her voice a little reluctant. She never wanted them here, but she had already taken their money, and for conscience’s sake, she couldn’t just leave them out there.
"Well, that doesn’t sound like a plan, does it?" Ling Xuan’s voice rose slightly.
Laurel’s steps faltered. "I know I promised to discuss every decision I take with you... I don’t want them here either. But thinking of how they died horribly in the past life, and having the chance to change their fate, I don’t want to be heartless, and let them die again because I hate them." 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
"Wow, what a touching speech." Ling Xuan in pure sarcasm.
"I made them stay in the outer part of the fortress, don’t worry I won’t keep them close to sabotage our lives," Laurel added.
Ling Xuan went quiet, she still wasn’t pleased with Laurel’s decision. And she knew talking with her was as good as wasting her precious time and effort. She only needed to find a way to make them leave.
Laurel resumed walking again when she didn’t hear Ling Xuan’s voice. She wondered if she was finally able to convince her otherwise... did you even have the heart to feel things the way she did?
Laurel shook her head. If she did, then it wasn’t the Ling Xuan she knew.
Walking towards the warehouse was a good amount of distance. She had to go to the farmland to water the herbs, and she needed to confirm whether the land was holding water or not.
Laurel increased her pace, the gravel crunching faintly beneath her shoes. The valley was far livelier than the last time she had seen it. Workers moved back and forth carrying planks, metal sheets, and sealed crates. The walls were completed and even the towers were completed.
There were now some remaining houses that still needed maintenance. The mansion in the center of the valley was also completed but was missing windows, tiles, and also required maintenance.
Somewhere in the distance, the low hum of a generator rumbled through the air, proof that the power system Alexander had ordered was already being installed.
The drizzle had almost stopped now, leaving behind a damp warmth that clung to the air. Thin streams of water ran along the shallow channels dug into the earth, flowing toward the lower end of the valley, the same path the streams were flowing.
Laurel was satisfied with the good work. Most of the things were settled.
After minutes of walking, just as she approached the wide path leading to the warehouse, a familiar voice called out.
"Laurel!"
She turned immediately.
Chris jogged toward her from the direction of the inner compound, his usually neat hair was slightly disheveled and his shirt was clinging faintly to his body.
He gasped for air, as the hurried steps were a little too much for his lungs to handle.
"You made it," she said, releasing a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding.
Chris slowed to a stop in front of her, studying her face as if confirming she was unharmed.
"We arrived about an hour ago," he replied. "The flight was a little rough, but here we are."
Her brows knitted slightly. "Did anyone get hurt?"
"No, not at all."
She nodded in relief.
"I saw the helicopters earlier," he continued. "More people?"
"The Wayne family," Laurel answered calmly.
Chris raised a brow but didn’t question it. Instead, his gaze swept across the valley before returning to her.
"You chose a good location. Even if the flood comes, the channel dug works the same as the stream does. We don’t have to worry about too much rain."
His words eased a tension she hadn’t noticed tightening inside her chest.
Before she could respond, a translucent blue panel suddenly flickered to life in front of her wrist.
[Warning: Environmental fluctuation detected.]
Her eyes sharpened.
Another line appeared.
[Soil moisture exceeding optimal range.]
[Dan Shen health dropping... 66%]
[Shi Hu health dropping... 70%]
Laurel’s breath stilled, the moment she read those lines.
"The herbs..." she murmured.
Chris frowned. "What herbs?"
"I’ll explain later," Laurel said, already walking away.
Without wasting anymore time, she headed toward the farmland, her steps quickening into a near run.
The moment the rows came into view, her heart sank.
The mulch she had carefully spread was darker now and was overly saturated. Water pooled between some of the trenches, and the porous stones she had arranged were half-submerged.
’Oh, no, no, no.’ She cried inwardly.
She crouched immediately, pressing her fingers into the soil. It was no longer loose, the soil clung together heavily.
If this continued, the roots of the Dan Shen herbs would suffocate.
"Damn it..." she whispered.
Footsteps approached behind her. Chris stopped a short distance away, instantly grasping the seriousness from her expression alone.
"What do you need?" he asked.
Laurel looked up at him, contemplating whether she should let him help or not.
"Anything that can redirect the water. We need to deepen the drainage channels before the next rainfall."
