Apocalypse: Reborn with a Soul Sync Farming Space System-Chapter 81 Civilization Burning
Laurel walked closer to the crater, coughing as the smoke from the extinguished flames hovered stubbornly in the air. Fanning her nose, Laurel stepped closer to the edge of the crate.
The meteor rock was about two meters in size and was buried half deep in the smoking crater. The impact had carved a pit several meters wide. The surface was scorched black and uneven, marked with shallow dents.
"Whoa, this is my first time seeing a meteor rock." A soldier said as he removed his helmet. "I watched a meteor shower with my wife a couple of years ago, I never knew they could be this big and dangerous." He added, stepping inside the crate.
"Don’t get too close," Laurel warned before stepping inside the crater.
Deep down she inwardly thanked Ling Xuan for training her, even though it was just squatting and running too many laps. At least she was more fit compared to before.
The crate was still hot, and as Laurel moved closer she noticed how dense the rock looked, almost like a metalloid.
"What a fine piece." Ling Xuan’s voice echoed in her head. "This material is so dense and special, I can even smell it in the air. This would make great weapons."
Laurel unconsciously nodded her head to Ling Xuan’s words. She didn’t bother to touch the surface of the rock.
"Don’t touch it yet, secure the area. We should let it fully cool down before we decide what to do next." Laurel said, turning back to climb out of the crater.
When they came out of the crater, the horizon beyond the fortress was covered in flames. Laurel’s brows lowered slightly, as a heavy feeling tightened in her chest.
The world that she once knew was gone, the orders, the law, and norms had been reduced to nothing but ashes.
’We only narrowly escaped this time. Ever since I returned, some of the events had been altered, this only means the monster’s attacks will happen faster than before. I need to start making extra preparations now...
... the meteor showers would make many humans awaken their abilities. I have to talk with Ling Xuan, it is best to start recruiting people as soon as possible.’ She thought inwardly as she made her way back into the van.
"Should we let the people out of the basement? I heard a woman going crazy, screaming that she wants to come out in District A." The soldier sitting beside her said.
He couldn’t help but wonder what was wrong with the woman. The base in district A was the best because it was situated in the inner wall.
Laurel glanced at the window, staring at the barrier shielding the fortress, which was even protective against the hot gusts of wind.
"Let them out." She said as she continued staring outside.
She had once thought they would have a chance to celebrate the old world before the meteor came, but she was wrong, and it felt like she was robbed of that chance.
...
Meanwhile, outside the fortress, the world plummeted into chaos.
Fire engulfed buildings, and thick smoke rolled upward towards the sky. Sirens cried from every direction, yet the sound was almost drowned by the distant crashes as more burning rocks struck the city.
A meteor slammed through the roof of a shopping complex, collapsing the structure inward. The force sent dust and debris rushing into the streets, and the people who had been running nearby were thrown off their feet. Some staggered up again, while others never moved.
Cars blocked the main roads, many of them abandoned with engines still running, and people rushed out of the ones behind them, running for their lives.
On another road, a bus stood across an intersection with small cars slamming into it. Its windshield was shattered, and a passenger pushed through the broken door, helping the elderly down before fleeing for their lives.
"Move! Don’t stop!" a man shouted as he pulled his wife along, her sandals long gone somewhere behind them.
Above, another streak of light cut across the red sky.
It hit an office tower several blocks away.
The upper floors erupted in flames, and glass burst outward before raining down like sharp crystals. People on the ground screamed and covered their heads, pressing themselves against walls and vehicles for shelter.
A lady burst out in wails, as she watched bodies scattered across the streets, lying motionless. Her lips wobbled, as she looked up, fear flashed through her. Frozen to the floor, she could only watch as a huge block of wall buried her.
Near a small park, a mother wrapped both arms around her daughter and crouched beside a stone bench. The child’s cries were thin and endless, but the woman only held her tighter, whispering words she did not believe herself.
The ground trembled again, lighter this time but enough to remind everyone that it was not over.
Emergency responders tried to force their way through the gridlocked streets, but panic had already taken control. Some people shoved past each other just to gain a few steps, while others stood frozen, staring at the sky as if unable to accept what they were seeing.
Many of them regretted not listening to the Severance cult’s words.
...
In the Severance cult’s base.
"What do you mean you don’t know?!" Mack’s voice thundered through the room.
Fear and confusion marred Camile’s face. "The meteor was supposed to come in two weeks, I don’t know why it is happening now." She quickly said in her defense.
"So you are telling me that your so-called visions are not accurate? Do you know how many supplies we lost, the men we lost, and the people?" He grabbed her neck pulling her closer.
"You said if we harbor the people, then we can easily have the superhumans to our side... but not a single one has been detected. Are you playing with me?" His words sent shivers down her spine.
"That... they will start awakening soon." She said, clasping her hand over his.
