Apocalypse: Transmigrated General's Daughter Uses Space to Survive-Chapter 510: Trenches Before the Storm
"That’s a good idea, but will the zombies fall for such an obvious trap with their intelligence having increased?" The president wondered out loud, picturing the trap in his mind.
"Even though most of the zombies seemingly taking themselves as leaders have developed intelligence, most of the zombies, even those with abilities are still mindless and cannot think.
They follow orders given by the leaders mindlessly.
So, we don’t have to worry too much.
Also, from what Miaoer said after confronting the zombie leader, those in leadership positions seem to avoid humans.
Even when fighting in a battle, they remain at the back giving orders while hiding.
So, you don’t have to worry about the trap getting discovered early." Ye Xuan had of course thought of the possibility of the trenches dug up being discovered by the zombies.
But if the zombies at the front are those who only know how to attack without caring about themselves, then there is no need to worry.
"If that’s the case, then we can be rest assured. I will have earth superpower users assembled to start the job now. We can’t delay our plans at all because we don’t know when the battle might begin." The president said and immediately gave the order for the earth superpower users to volunteer.
He also promised to pay them three kilograms of rice each for their work.
With the promise of food, those with the ability didn’t hold back at all and soon, a group of almost a hundred people from young to old, men and women started using their abilities to dig up wide and deep trenches.
One could see them stretching their hands and waving them from side to side.
At the same time, the soul near the wall of the base began to loosen and shift.
Others made the earth crack and separate parts of the ground with huge blocks of soil being lifted, leaving craters behind.
The sky above their heads seemed to hang lower than usual, as if it, too, sensed the coming disaster.
Ye Xuan stood atop the tall wall, his long coat that he had just put on fluttering in the cold wind that suddenly turned cold.
From this height, he could clearly see the land stretching far out of sight. Once fertile fields and roads, now scarred by mutated plants, craters, and dried black blood.
Such a sight would make the faint-hearted cower and their resolve shake.
However, Ye Xuan had experienced too much to be intimidated by something so insignificant.
As the King of the immortal realm, he had witnessed and participated in creating more gory and scarier sights.
"Make sure the depth of the trenches reaches at least five meters and width three meters.
That way it would be less noticeable but still effective." His voice echoed in the open land, carried by the wind for all those working below to hear.
Dozens of earth-element superpower users moved into position at his command. Their hands pressed against the ground, brows beaded with sweat as energy surged from the cores in their bodies into the soil beneath their feet.
For most of them, this was the first time they were using their ability for something other than attacking zombies or other survivors.
Some were inexperienced, but for the protection of the base and the promised reward, they bit their lower lips and gritted their teeth to keep pouring energy into the ground.
Their efforts were not in vain as the earth continued to respond.
The ground trembled softly at first, then split open with dull, grinding sounds.
Soil rose and shifted like waves, compacting into solid walls on one side while deep trenches were carved out on the other.
What would have taken hundreds of ordinary people weeks to dig was happening in hours.
This was nothing short of a miracle, and Ye Xuan stood on the wall together with the other leaders of the base as they watched it happen with a critical eye.
Whenever he thought of a way to improve efficiency, he would point it out for the people below to implement.
These trenches were not simple ditches. Every angle, slope, and depth had been calculated.
Most of the zombies lacked intelligence but possessed terrifying momentum.
Once they started running, they would not stop.
These trenches would break that momentum, forcing the zombies to fall, pile up, and slow the ones behind them.
It will also give the survivors an opportunity to pour gasoline and light up those zombies that had fallen into the trenches, creating another barrier with fire and giving those fighting from the ground a breather.
Speed was the enemy. Time was survival. So, if they could slow down the zombies, more people would survive.
"Major Ye," a man wearing a worn out military uniform jogged over from inside the base, performing a standard military salute.
"The team in the western region reports unstable soil near the old drainage line. If we dig too deep, it might collapse inward."
This was not good news because if the trenches were too shallow, they wouldn’t be as effective.
The old drainage had been built using standard materials, but the extreme heat had affected them, causing them to be compromised.
When the heavy floods followed, they made everything worse and now even digging some trenches might cause a collapse. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢
Ye Xuan had no choice but to make an urgent decision.
Ye Xuan nodded slightly. "Tell them to reinforce the trench walls with compressed earth layers.
Add stone if necessary. We want collapses only when zombies step in, not before."
Ye Xuan had been involved in wars and battles for thousands of years even before he gained enough strength to unify the Immortal Realm and become the Immortal King.
This small battle with the zombies couldn’t stump him.
"Yes, sir." The man saluted once more before turning around and running off the way he came from.
As the man ran off, Ye Xuan turned his gaze back to the workers. Some were veterans soldiers with faces hardened by bloodshed.
