Chapter 99: Foreboding

Nadine clenched her jaw when she saw Myles get hurled through the wall. Her nails dug into her palms as dust and debris swallowed the collapsing house.

For a brief moment feelings of fear threatened to take over, but she crushed it down. She had to keep her mind clear to be able to help Myles.

She turned sharply to Samantha and Ethan, who had the only two ranged weapons among them.

"You two use your weapons. You two must support him and us from afar. Now!" Nadine said. Even through her best effort, her voice still sounded trembling.

Samantha blinked a few times, then clenched her jaw as if she didn’t hesitate. She nodded and drew her bow in a smooth motion. She using her Ether energy and flowed it into the string as she pulled it back, the weapon responding like it had been waiting for this moment and let out a low vibration as if confirming their sync.

Beside her, Ethan takes a deep breath and also readying himself. He checked both of his pistols, thumb brushing over the runes carved into the frames. MP-Ether surged from his core and fed into the weapons, causing faint lines of light to pulse along the barrels.

Both of them knew this wasn’t ordinary weapons. The Undertaker hadn’t given them normal weapons.

Samantha’s bow thrummed softly as its hidden power awakened. Her elegant black bow had two skills:

Phantom Trajectory – Fired arrows can alter their path in the middle of the flight, curving around obstacles and correcting toward vital points that the user targeted before shooting it. The longer the bow is drawn before release, the sharper and more aggressive the trajectory becomes. Resonant Afterimage – Activating this skill records every Ether-infused arrow released within a short window. When the effect ends, all recorded shots manifest simultaneously as spectral arrows that retrace their original flight paths at high speed. Each afterimage deals reduced damage but all hits stack and strike at the same time. The skill enters a 30 seconds cooldown after activation.

Ethan’s pistols also had two skills that not less strong:

Ether Pierce – Bullets infused with Ether reduce the target’s Ether reinforcement and physical resistance by 4% per hit, stacking up to 6 times. The effect fades if no hit is landed within 5 seconds. Overclock Cataclysm – Activating this skill forces both pistols into a full Ether overdrive state and burns the user’s MP. All shots auto-correct toward hostile Ether signatures within range and deal +120% damage. MP drains heavily each second while active, and when the duration ends, the pistols enter an overload state of 60 seconds.

"I’m ready," Ethan said with determination.

Samantha nodded beside him, her expression also firm and steady.

Nadine looked at the two youngest members of the group, her gaze sharp and trusting.

"Shoot now. But be careful don’t hit Myles," she said. "You already know how to use those weapons, right?"

"Of course," Ethan replied. "I’ve never used guns before, but these weapons automatically synchronize with me the moment I pour my energy into them."

Samantha nodded again, clearly feeling the same connection.

"Hurry!" George shouted. "Myles is getting beaten down!"

"We’ll move in after they create an opening," Nadine said without taking her eyes off the battlefield.

"Alright," George answered, nodding.

Ethan and Samantha raised their weapons at the same time.

Ether gathered on Samantha’s bow, forming a luminous arrow on its own. The string hummed softly, vibrating with power.

Ethan steadied his pistols, his MP flowing smoothly into the barrels as faint light traced the runes carved into the metal.

The monster moved at blinding speed while clashing with Myles, black limbs and steel of the blade colliding again and again. Yet despite the chaos, both Ethan and Samantha felt an uncanny familiarity guiding their hands.

The Ether within their weapons carried intent, instinct, and experience as if they had wielded them for years. Their aim never wavered.

BANG!

SWISH!

Bullets and Ether arrows shot forward almost simultaneously, tearing through the air with piercing force.

CRACK!

Both attacks struck the monster’s back at the same instant. The impact detonated outward, Ether energy and kinetic force colliding violently.

The monster was thrown sideways, his body smashing across the ground as black dust and debris erupted around him.

Myles froze for a split second, startled by the sudden opening. But it was not for long, he moved.

He surged forward and slashed with the Fangblade, pouring his Ether and strength into the strike. This time, the black blade cut deep. It pierced through the hardened skin and tore open flesh beneath.

Thick, blackened blood spilled out—it was far denser than normal blood—as it oozed from the wound.

The Bloodthirsty Slash finally took effect.

The Fangblade drank in the injury, its power would be amplified as the monster’s wounds multiplied.

The damage waiting to be dealt had begun to stack, and the monster’s grin finally faltered and glared at Myles with terrifying anger, his teeth grinding together hard enough to screech.

Veins bulged along his neck as fury twisted his refined features.

He lashed out, trying to snap Myles’ legs in a brutal sweep.

Myles reacted on instinct. He jumped just in time, the attack cutting through empty air beneath him.

The monster clicked his tongue and leapt backward, then twisted mid-air and landed heavily.

His head snapped around as his eyes scanned the ruins, searching for the source of the attack that had caught him off guard.

It didn’t take long for from the shattered remains of a ruined house, two figures burst into view—Nadine and George sprinted straight toward him without hesitation.

At the same time, Victor and the rest of his group saw the opening clearly.

They abandoned their hiding place and charged as well, weapons drawn and expressions grim.

Ryan still hadn’t returned but none of them cared anymore. This fight had already reached the point of no return. They believed Ryan would join the battle the moment he arrived.

Everything was going down for real. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

The monster’s lips curled upward once more. His grin returned wider than before, stretching unnaturally across his face as black blood continued to drip from his wound.

Then he laughed.

"HAHAHAHA!"

The sound echoed through the ruined district, bouncing off walls and buildings, heavy with madness and pride.

"THIS IS INTERESTING!" the monster roared. "SHOW ME WHAT YOU’VE GOT!"

His arms spread wide as if welcoming them all.

"I HAVE BECOME A GOD NOW!"

Those words made Myles flinch. For just a heartbeat, a chill crawled up his spine.

But the others didn’t slow down because they didn’t listen to his words. Nadine kept running, George right beside her. Victor and the others pressed forward with killing intent burning in their eyes.

Myles tightened his grip on the Fangblade. The monster’s words just create a foreboding dread in his heart.

Myles shook his head and pushed the unease aside and stepped forward to meet them. His magical energy surged through his battered body.

Around him. Rubble crunched under his boots as the distance vanished.

The monster’s laughter faltered for an instant when he felt it—the shift, the pressure, the united intent bearing down on him.

The others steadied their stances. Ethan and Samantha drew again.
