Chapter 60: The best hunter.

The cars parked by the edge of the forest and the lookout team stayed back. Drones were sent ahead, monitored by comms officers in the cars and others at Fortress Four.

The teams separated and walked into the forest on foot. Sunshine and Hades went with team zero, naturally.

"Stay behind us." Major Elio suddenly came up on their team from behind.

"What the hell!" Nimo exclaimed, whirling around with her weapon in hand. "What are you doing here Major Elio?"

Major Elio stepped in front of Sunshine, playing the role of her personal bodyguard. "This team has six women. You also have the leaders of our base, the two people that are supposed to help us protect our families if this damn apocalypse is real. If you think that I am leaving their hands in the lives of the softer sex, you are mistaken soldier." He answered.

Erica, Nimo and the other female soldiers sneered or shook their heads.

"Fuck you Elio." One of them said.

"That is Major Elio to you Captain Blair. So, remember to add my proper title when you insult me." He replied.

Even while he was being a jerk, he was monitoring the environment around them expertly.

"Just walk, we don’t have time for sensitivity class." Sunshine pushed the major.

They moved deeper and the trees grew thicker; every branch shimmered with droplets. The air was earthy and rich. Every now and then, they heard the sound of gunshots, but their team had yet to see a single animal.

"Damn it, this group 10, 10-4 reporting, Private Stone is injured." A voice came from Nimo’s radio.

Nimo reached for it eagerly and put it to her mouth. "How bad?"

The voice came again, "Not too bad, she shot herself in the foot while trying to shoot a squirrel."

Major Elio shook his head. "Women." He muttered.

"Group 8, Echo Echo, we have bagged five bucks, no squirrels. I repeat, no squirrels."

"Group one, Six wild chicken, three boars and two snakes. No squirrels. frёeωebɳovel.com

The reports continued to come, every group had something with the exception of group zero.

"Group zero, come in." Someone called for them.

"We are fine." Nimo hissed into the radio. The hunt had been turned into a competition, and they were losing. She paused her steps and looked at her teammates, "Attention people, keep your eyes sharp. We are looking for anything with hooves, paws and wings or tastes good with hot sauce."

Blair frowned. "Everything tastes good with hot sauce."

"Women." Major Elio muttered.

Sunshine took an arrow and fired it without warning. Something squeaked and Major Elio rushed over. He found a fat rabbit, shot between the eyes with a single arrow.

It was their first catch.

Major Elio tugged on Nimo’s shirt pulling her back. "What did you say this woman does for a living?" He asked, taking note of Sunshine’s unique skilled shot.

"A simple mechanic." Nimo smiled, raising her brows.

Hades who was passing by paused and looked at the major. "That is my wife." A grin full of pride accompanied his words.

Sunshine did not wait to brag; she reached for another arrow and gazed around intensely. The others followed the movements of her hands. Suddenly they noticed a tumbling through leaves and saw a flash of gray.

Before any bullet could be fired, Sunshine’s arrow found the prey, another rabbit. The team cheered quietly.

Then came an unexpected action, Hades leaped in a very not humanly possible way and grabbed something. When he stood up, he was carrying a deer.

"What the hell!" Major Elio exclaimed.

There was no time for questions as a flock of pheasants, startled from undergrowth by Hades panicked and revealed themselves. Putting away their guns, the team fanned out, netting six in a chaotic swoop.

An hour into the hunt, drizzle thickened again. Sunshine stopped suddenly and raised her hand. The team had come to trust her hunting instincts.

"What do you smell?" Nimo asked her softy.

"Musk." She whispered.

They squatted down and crept forward past a cluster of cherries. In a clearing, ahead stood a herd of deer, at least thirty strong. Some were grazing on carrots and other standing proudly, ears twitching.

"We are so winning." Blair whispered.

Someone cocked a gun, and the deer were spooked so the team run in randomly, shooting. Hades went in with his robot leg, tripping and tranquilizing every deer that tried to run past him.

One tried to ram him, and he kicked it into a tree. Nimo decided to ditch the gun and just punch the doe which was about to leap over her.

Someone tripped and groaned.

"I am okay." he shouted.

The end result was that they captured sixteen deer. Sunshine alone took down seven with her arrows.

"How are we carrying these back?" Blair asked.

Hades opened the zip of the bag he was carrying and unfolded a trolley, and he assembled it. It was almost as tall as he was and as wide as half of a bus. It was one of the things that Sunshine had acquired from the system and fixed.

Major Elio looked at Hades in horror. The others tried to look inside the trolley. A male soldier decided not to leave behind the cherries and carrots.

"Every team was given one of these and I showed them how to assemble them." Hades told the stunned Major. Then he slapped him on the shoulder and started putting their prey inside.

Others helped and the mission was quickly completed and the hunt continued.

Three hours and fifty-five minutes into the hunt, Sunshine came to a stop again. "A boar."

"It must be a big one, look at the footprints." Erica jutted her chin towards the ground at the footprint in the ground.

As if it sensed that it was wanted, the boar they were searching for stepped into view and many weapons were raised.

"Do not shoot, lower those damn guns. There could be others in the area. We don’t need them jumping us." Nimo hissed softly.

Sunshine moved, watching the boar closely.

In a blur of Grey and black she up and flung her leveled up hammer onto the boar’s head before it could react. The boar squealed and collapsed to the ground; head smashed like a patty.

No noise. No riffles or guns fired. Just breath and blood.

Major Elio’s mouth dropped open. He stumbled back and Hades caught him around the waist.

"That is my wife, she can handle herself as you can see." He tapped the major on the shoulder again.

The other soldiers continued to stare in awe, frozen. That hammer looked big!! And where had it vanished to or even come from?

"She just...."

"Didn’t even break a sweat."

"It’s almost like as though she has done this a million times, such a natural." Commander Grayson commented

"Was that a hammer I saw her hit it with?" Major Elio narrowed his eyes, searching for the big hummer all he saw was a small one on her tool belt, he didn’t know that it had already shrunk back to its original size.

"There are no other wild pigs, and we have run out of time." Sunshine announced. "We should return now."

Nimo gave the order, everyone turned back, pleased with their harvest. They had one trolley full of edible animal meat, mushrooms, fruit and wild vegetables.

Sunshine was uneasy. Four hours of hunting and they had not run into wolves, tigers or other deadly predators. Were they in hiding because of the apocalypse? Could they sense that the sky was about to be painted red?
