Chapter 211: Acquaintance Gathering

"Hello, everyone. Please, come inside," Elena greeted warmly, motioning for them to hurry in from the freezing cold.

Everyone nodded and stepped inside, stealing glances at Elena.

They couldn’t help but feel a bit envious of Ethan—how lucky he was to have such a gentle and beautiful wife.

"Hello, Mrs. Caldwell. It’s good to finally meet you again. Do you still remember me from your wedding day?" General Reid asked with a smile.

He had been one of Grandpa Caldwell’s students, and when he was invited to the wedding, he gladly attended.

Of course, Elena remembered him—not because of the wedding, but because of her past life.

This man had been a key military leader in the fight against the aliens.

Sadly, before she had the chance to know him better back then, he died under mysterious circumstances.

"Hello, sir. I haven’t had the chance to thank you for the gift you sent on our wedding day," Elena said politely, showing a side of herself quite different from how she had acted during the tense negotiations with the military.

It felt a bit funny—just a while ago, they had been in serious talks, and now she was playing the role of a kind and gracious wife.

"Haha, it was just a small token for the occasion. No need to return the favor," General Reid replied with a chuckle.

Soon, the guests entered the house, and Ethan began introducing each of them to Elena.

When it was finally Jenna’s turn, she eagerly took Elena’s hand and thanked her over and over for saving her husband.

"It must be fate that we met again. I’m so happy to see you doing well," Jenna said warmly, admiring Elena’s rosy cheeks and healthy look.

She had planned to bring extra food just in case they were struggling, but seeing Elena in good shape, she scrapped the idea.

"I..." Elena was a bit flustered.

Their past encountered had been brief, and saving Jenna’s husband hadn’t cost her much.

"Well, the same to you, madam. How is your husband?"

"He’s doing great. He’ll be joining us later. He was thrilled when he heard his benefactor was living here. And by the way, call me Aunt Jenna—’madam’ sounds way too formal."

"Okay, Aunt Jenna. I just hope he won’t bring any more supplies," Elena replied, worried that Aunt Jenna’s husband might insist on giving them more.

"Please, don’t refuse. That was my husband’s way of showing gratitude," Jenna replied firmly.

"Alright," Elena finally agreed.

Ethan soon joined them and then urged everyone to sit on the sofa.

The two women quickly grew closer, chatting and sharing their experiences over the past few months.

Aunt Jenna explained that after leaving City B, they returned to City C and, luckily, hitched a helicopter ride back to City A.

"At least our luck has been good since then," Jenna said, though her expression dimmed as she added, "But then disaster hit, and we were caught up dealing with the chaos that followed."

"As long as we’re safe and can reunite with our family, then that’s good enough," Elena replied, feeling relieved that their journey had gone smoothly.

Soon after, Grandpa Caldwell arrived and began chatting with his former student.

General Reid was happy to see his old mentor and immediately offered to send more supplies for him to use.

"No need," Grandpa Caldwell decline.

"My daughter and grandson are taking good care of me. You should keep those supplies for yourself."

After some back-and-forth, General Reid finally gave in to his mentor’s firm refusal.

"Master, are you really not returning to the military?" General Kaiser asked.

He once suggested that Ethan bring his family to the military base for safety, but he had turned him down, saying they were doing fine in their current place.

"I like it here," Grandpa Caldwell answered. "With my family around, I feel safe."

General Kaiser didn’t press further. He knew his mentor well—once he made a decision, no one could change his mind.

"Alright, but if you ever change your mind, just let my men know. Since I’ll be heading back to the base soon."

"Then who will manage the evacuation here?" Grandpa Caldwell asked.

"General Arthur Mason," General Kaiser replied.

"Don’t worry—he’s a man of integrity and a close friend of mine. If you need anything, ask him. I’ll make sure he takes special care of you."

"Alright. Be careful out there—especially with the disaster and those unknown beasts lurking around," Grandpa Caldwell advised.

General Reid nodded in agreement.

Just then, someone knocked on the door.

Ethan opened it and saw the man they had saved back in City B, now carrying a large amount of supplies.

Ethan greeted him warmly and welcomed him inside.

Seeing her husband, Aunt Jenna quickly stood up and walked to his side.

"Husband, this is the home of our benefactors," she said with a smile.

Then she turned to Ethan and Elena and added, "This is my husband, Arthur."

"Hello, sir. It’s a pleasure to meet you," Ethan said, politely extending his hand.

Since this man would soon be in charge of the military evacuation center, making a good impression was important.

"No, the pleasure is mine. I haven’t properly thanked you yet for saving my life. Please accept these supplies as a small token of my gratitude," General Mason replied sincerely.

Ethan accepted the supplies without hesitation, knowing that this was his way of expressing thanks.

After a bit of conversation, they all sat down for an early dinner.

The meal was lavish—meat soup, assorted vegetables, fresh fruits, and even dessert, served with expensive wine.

It was a rare feast in such troubled times, all thanks to the Paradise Shop, should anyone ask.

"They even sell dessert! This pudding looks amazing," Aunt Jenna exclaimed.

She hadn’t tasted anything like it since the disaster began.

"Then I’ll buy you some later," General Mason said, gazing at his wife with affection.

"No need. This one must be expensive," she sighed.

Elena chuckled and said, "If you like it, Aunt Jenna, I’ll pack some for you. I brought plenty, so please don’t say no. You’ve given me a lot of supplies."

Aunt Jenna accepted it. "Okay."

Dinner went on for quite a while. The military officers and Ethan shared stories of their peaceful days, sipping wine and beer as the evening wore on.

It was nearly 9 PM when the guests finally left.

Elena and Ethan quickly went upstairs, but as soon as they entered Grandpa Caldwell’s unit, they were greeted by a thick cloud of smoke that made them cough.
