At first glance, the Lord’s reward seemed rather stingy, offering only one item. But the twist was that there were no limits. This meant that even the highest-value items in the treasury were available for Tristan to choose!

This, of course, was exactly where he thrived. Having spent a decade in ExoGenesis, Tristan had long developed an eye for the best gear, and nothing slipped past him. Moreover, he was certain that even Lord Karlke himself probably didn’t know all the treasures hidden in his vast treasury, which had been accumulated over generations of Davi City rulers.

Tristan’s excitement grew. There could very well be a rare gem waiting for him to uncover.

With this thought in mind, he quickly bowed in gratitude, "Thank you, Lord Karlke!"

Karlke yawned, looking utterly drained. He weakly waved his hand. "I won’t be going to the treasury myself. Let my daughter, Taylor, accompany you."

At that moment, a graceful figure emerged. Tall and elegant, her face partially concealed by a scarf, yet her features were unmistakably refined, almost doll-like in appearance.

It was Edith, but in this setting, she was known by another name: Taylor Langredi, the daughter of the city lord. She wasn’t dressed in the usual assassin garb but rather wore the standard attire of a noblewoman.

Tristan, treating this as their first meeting, greeted her politely. "It’s an honor, Lady Taylor."

Edith, or rather Taylor, smiled subtly, a hint of meaning in her words. "I’ve heard you killed Bonecrusher. Quite impressive, I must say."

Tristan couldn’t help but feel a bit uneasy. He knew Edith’s reputation—her compliments weren’t always as innocent as they seemed. When she said "impressive," it often came with a deadly intent.

However, since there was no real animosity between them and they’d even worked together in the past, Tristan wasn’t worried about his safety—for now.

Lord Karlke, with the help of his servants, moved away, leaving Tristan and the others to themselves. Horreo, ever cautious, added, "I’ll leave Lady Taylor to guide you."

Taylor’s identity was top secret, and Horreo was concerned whether Tristan might accidentally reveal it. He couldn’t afford to let anyone else in the Lord’s house learn about Edith’s second identity.

Tristan understood Horreo’s concerns and nodded. There was no reason for him to unmask Edith, especially considering she was an assassin instructor, and offending her would make future missions difficult. He wasn’t about to jeopardize his progression just to uncover a secret.

The three of them left the meeting hall in a strange silence, heading toward the garden at the back of the lord’s mansion. Though it was a garden, the area was well-guarded with numerous soldiers. Tristan also sensed several hidden sentries watching from the shadows.

It wasn’t surprising, though, considering that the city lord’s treasure vault was located somewhere within this area.

When they reached a large rock formation, Taylor stopped and spoke, "We’ve arrived."

She then took out a key and fiddled with the rocks for a moment. A loud rumble echoed, and the ground beneath them began to shift. The rock slid aside, revealing a dark passageway.

"Remember, you can only take one item," Taylor warned as she glanced at Tristan.

He nodded, "I understand."

Taylor shook her head slightly. "Many have said that, but once inside the vault, they lost their way."

She paused, then added, "Would you like to know what happened to them afterward?"

Tristan immediately shook his head, "No thanks."

It was obvious what she meant—those who were "lost" were probably eliminated by Edith herself. The way she said it, there was a certain satisfaction in her voice, as if sharing the thrill of the kill.

As they walked down the dark tunnel, Tristan couldn’t help but feel the weight of the moment. Taylor’s words lingered, but he pushed them aside to focus on his goal.

He asked, "Are there others inside the vault?"

Taylor, understanding his concern, answered, "There are guards outside, but no one is allowed in the vault except for the Lord and his chosen few."

After a brief pause, Tristan raised a direct question, "Are there any items related to Shadow Power in the vault?"

This was his main concern. He didn’t believe Taylor had simply taken an interest in Shadow Power on a whim. She had likely received a lead or directive from someone, and the most probable place for that was the city lord’s vault. Being the daughter of the lord, Edith must have explored it countless times as a child.

There was a glint of approval in Taylor’s eyes. "You’re more perceptive than I thought. Yes, there are such items."

Bingo!

Tristan’s heart raced. This was exactly what he’d hoped for. Back in his previous life, he’d been a warrior, but he’d also taken on similar quests. He’d once found a powerful class-specific item in the main city vault that had boosted his abilities.

Now, with the chance to explore Davi City’s vault, he wasn’t about to waste it.

With a sense of urgency, he said, "Let’s go, there’s no time to waste."

Taylor chuckled. "When you took down Gold Hook Jack, you weren’t nearly as impatient."

Tristan shrugged. "Gold Hook Jack was nothing compared to what we’re after now. Shadow Power-related items are on a whole different level. They’re worth the rush."

Taylor nodded in agreement. If not for the fact that revealing more information would be risky, she would have taken care of Gold Hook Jack herself by now.

As they continued through the vault, a large bronze door suddenly blocked their path. Taylor moved to the side, adjusting a torch by the door, and it slowly creaked open.

Tristan’s eyes were instantly dazzled by the sight before him.

Gold.

Mountains of gold coins, piled up like a treasure trove.

A rough estimate would put the amount at over 100,000 gold coins. In ExoGenesis, gold wasn’t just used for player-to-player transactions, but was also the main currency for the local inhabitants of the game world. A sum of 100,000 gold wasn’t insignificant by any means.

And that was just the surface of what lay hidden in the vault.

Tristan’s gaze swept over the piles of gold, and he spotted dozens of large chests neatly arranged along the wall.

Taylor spoke as if reading his thoughts, "Those are the legendary, epic-grade gear accumulated by the past city lords."

Epic-grade gear!

Tristan had seen some top-tier gear before, even Dark Gold Grade items, but epic-grade gear was a whole other level. The stats on such gear were likely beyond comprehension. But for now, Tristan wasn’t interested in those.

The treasure vault held more than just epic items. There was something even more valuable deeper inside.

Wanting to save time, Tristan cut straight to the chase. "Where are the items?"

Since Edith confirmed that Shadow Power-related items were here, she must know exactly where they were.

Edith, without wasting a moment, turned and began walking deeper into the vault. She tossed over her shoulder, "Follow me."

Tristan hastened to keep up, while Horreo stayed outside, guarding the entrance.

They arrived at a quiet corner of the vault. On a dusty shelf lay an ancient-looking book.

[Shadow Prism (Gold Grade): Passive skill. Shadow Power flows over the body, automatically creating a prism upon being attacked. The prism deflects all types of damage once. Cooldown: 30 seconds.]

[Trait: Charging: The Shadow Prism automatically recharges, with a maximum of 5 charges.]

Tristan’s heart skipped a beat. This was exactly what he’d been hoping for!
