Chapter 349: Chest

Alaric moved toward the chest.

Studied it for moment up close. The iron reinforcements were old, lock mechanism was complex, layers of essence formations woven into the metal itself. The wood had darkened with time to near-black.

He raised his fist. Fire essence coating his knuckles.

THUD!

The chest didn’t budge. Didn’t even scratch. The iron bands absorbed the impact like it was nothing.

He tried earth essence next. Pressed both palms flat against the lid and pushed, channeling dense, crushing force downward into the mechanism, trying to break the lock from above rather than attack it directly.

The lock pulsed once. Rejected him.

Wind blades.

Nothing.

The formations inside the lock simply dissolved his attempts before they could interact with anything meaningful.

He stepped back. Crossed his arms. Stared at the chest with growing frustration.

Burning it won’t work. Crushing it won’t work. Picking it won’t work.

So what—

He paused.

What exactly am I doing?

The question landed with embarrassing clarity.

He was attacking a lock. Throwing his aggressive techniques at something that clearly wasn’t designed to be forced open.

I’m trying to break down a door instead of just using the handle.

He exhaled. Let go of the aggressive approach entirely.

Sat down cross-legged in front of the chest. Rolled his shoulders and let tension drain from his muscles.

Then placed his palm flat against the lock.

And began channeling essence.

Letting his power move outward slowly, like water finding its own level. Feeling the lock’s formation patterns instead of fighting them. Reading the shape of what was there.

Minutes passed.

The formations were complex. But he could feel them now. Their structure. Their logic.

Something tickled at the edge of his awareness. A familiar resonance. Like hearing fragment of song and almost recognizing it.

Shadow essence.

The thought came quietly.

Alaric let shadow essence rise naturally. Didn’t force it, just let it surface and flow into the lock mechanism.

Click!

Then another.

And another.

The lock opened.

Simple as that. No drama. No resistance.

Just mechanism recognizing correct key and responding accordingly.

The chest lid rose smoothly on.

Alaric leaned forward.

And looked, there were several items inside.

He activated his scan feature immediately.

[Scan Active]

First item—

A blade. Sheathed in scabbard of dark material that seemed to absorb light. Slender. Single-edged. The handle wrapped in material that felt warm despite the cave’s chill.

[Item: Nightfire Edge]

[Classification: LEGENDARY]

[Type: Single Edge Blade]

[Material: Voidsteel]

[Effect 1 - Shadowflame Synthesis: Blade channels both fire and shadow essence simultaneously, allowing techniques from either affinity to be executed through weapon without conversion loss]

[Effect 2 - Consuming Dark: Successful strikes apply shadow erosion to target’s essence channels, reducing their output by 8% per hit. Stacks up to 5 times. Resets on target death.]

[Effect 3 - Ember Soul: Blade retains residual essence from kills, gradually strengthening over time with use]

[Grade Requirement: C Rank and above]

[Condition: Perfect]

Alaric’s breath hitched.

Legendary Item?

He stared at it. Then picked it up carefully.

Even sheathed, he could feel it. the dual resonance of fire and shadow humming through the handle like two heartbeats synchronized.

He set it aside carefully and focused on the next item.

Which was a crystal, size of his fist.

It was deep black with veins of deep crimson running through it like frozen lightning. Pulsing slowly with internal light.

[Item: Technique Crystal - Umbral Inferno]

[Classification: EPIC]

[Type: Skill Tome]

[Contents: Umbral Inferno - Advanced combination technique merging fire and shadow essence into singular destructive force. Creates black flames that burn physical matter AND essence simultaneously. Cannot be extinguished by conventional means.]

[Mastery Stages: 4]

[Current Learnable Stage: 1]

[Requirements: Must possess both Fire and Shadow affinity at C rank or above]

[Absorption Time: Approximately 6-8 hours of focused meditation]

[Condition: Intact]

Alaric set it beside the blade. His hands were slightly unsteady.

Black flames that burn essence...

Third item was a ring.

Dark metal band. Simple. No gemstone or decoration. But dense with compressed essence that made his fingers tingle just touching it.

[Item: Voidwalker’s Band]

[Classification: LEGENDARY]

[Type: Accessory]

[Effect 1 - Essence Veil: Reduces wearer’s essence signature visibility by 70%. Hostile detection techniques below A rank fail automatically.]

[Effect 2 - Shadow Step: Once per hour, user can instantly translocate up to 15 meters through shadows. Leaves no essence trail.]

[Effect 3 - Void Resistance: Reduces damage from darkness and shadow-based attacks by 45%.]

[Condition: Perfect]

He slipped it onto his finger without hesitation. Felt it settle, tightening slightly, adjusting to fit perfectly.

Immediately, something changed. Like someone had turned down the volume on his own presence. The ambient essence radiating from him just... quieted.

Seventy percent reduction. I’m practically invisible.

Fourth item—

He almost didn’t see it. Wrapped in dark cloth at the chest’s bottom, deliberately concealed beneath everything else.

He unwrapped it carefully.

A gauntlet. Left hand only. Black metal that wasn’t quite metal, surface shifting between solid and something else, that existed slightly outside normal material classification.

Veins of deep crimson ran through it identical to the technique crystal’s pattern.

[Item: Ashen Sovereign’s Gauntlet]

[Classification: MYTHIC]

[Type: Equipment]

[Effect 1 - Primordial Ignition: Concentrates fire essence to extreme density within the gauntlet. Strikes deliver internal combustion directly to target’s essence core, bypassing external defenses entirely.]

[Effect 2 - Void Grasp: It can physically interact with and grip shadow constructs, essence barriers, and non-corporeal entities as if they were solid matter.]

[Effect 3 - Sovereign’s Pressure: Passively radiates suppressive field in 3 meter radius. Entities two or more ranks below wearer experience involuntary essence suppression.]

[Effect 4 - LOCKED. Unlock condition unknown.]

[Grade Requirement: B rank minimum.]

[WARNING: Equipping below requirement will result in essence backlash.]

[Condition: Perfect]

Alaric stared at the gauntlet for long time.

B rank minimum. I’m C+.

He couldn’t use it. Not yet. Not without risking essence backlash that in his current state would probably kill him.

But he kept it anyway. Wrapped it back in its cloth carefully, reverently. Because someday—

Someday soon.

Then placed it aside.

Who the fuck thought I would get a legendary and mythic equipments in single day?

Finally, the last item. Pressed flat against the very bottom of the chest’s lining, almost invisible against the dark wood.

Was a stone. Dark as void. No larger than his palm.

Single symbol carved into its surface in language his mind couldn’t quite process, letters that seemed to shift and rearrange when he wasn’t looking directly at them.

[Scan Active]

[Item: ???]

[Classification: UNKNOWN]

[System insufficient to analyze this item]

[WARNING: Do not attempt to channel essence directly into item without understanding its nature]

[Recommendation: Extreme caution]

The system panel flickered. Glitched. Then:

[Scan feature temporarily suspended. Item has interfered with scan functionality. Please wait.]

Alaric blinked. The stone had just interfered with his system.

A rock the size of his palm had made his system tap out.

He turned it over slowly. The symbol on its surface pulsed once, faint, almost imperceptible, when his shadow essence accidentally brushed against it.

Then went still.

What are you?

No answers. Just the stone sitting in his palm, warm despite having been in a cold chest in a cold cave, radiating quiet significance that transcended its unremarkable appearance.

He wrapped it carefully and pocketed it separately from everything else.

Alaric then sat back on his heels and looked at what he’d found.

Legendary blade. Epic technique crystal. Legendary ring already on his finger. Mythic gauntlet he couldn’t yet use. And something that broke his system just by existing.

From one chest.

He exhaled slowly.

And picked up the Nightfire Edge. Attached the scabbard to his belt. The weight of it felt right in a way weapons rarely did.

Picked up the technique crystal. Pocketed it for later, absorbing it now with damaged channels and no safe location would be foolish.

Wrapped the Mythic gauntlet securely.

He stood. Rolled his shoulders. The Voidwalker’s Band pulsed once on his finger.

Alaric looked at the empty chest one final time.

Then turned toward the exit portal that had appeared after the disappearance of the wolf.

And got out.
