Chapter 9: Chapter 9: Alpha Dire Wolf Spirit, Losing more Summons

"Link," Karl said once he entered the cemetery.

There were twenty-six tombstones before him, meaning that the cemetery was in fact growing larger and larger.

From the tombstones rose 20 spectral beasts Karl had slain, wolves, bears, and serpents.

Their ghostly forms swirled together, merging into a massive [Alpha Dire Wolf], its glowing eyes filled with primal fury.

"Oh, so it seems I can also get an evolution of the initial beasts...?" Karl titled his head.

But a panel came to block his view.

[These are not evolutions, it is simply because the Dire Wolves were a majority of the spirit orbs taken.]

[You will only be able to evolve your spirits later.]

That was all, and then the panel disappeared.

The [Alpha Dire Wolf] was slightly bigger than the others, and also seemed more majestic.

And the thing that made it unique.

[Level 4 Alpha Dire Wolf]

[Skill: Roar - Intimidate weaker foes.]

That thing actually had a skill, and it could use it by itself!

All of Karl's other summons only used their claws, paws or bodies to attack, but this one could actually use a skill!

So it was true that the more spirits it took to link a summon, then the stronger said summon would be.

Maybe they could even get magic skills later!

"Anyway, let's move on quickly before I get killed."

He closed his eyes for a moment and, upon reopening them, found himself back in the [Living Forest].

"Spirit Summoning." Raising his hand, he called forth the [Alpha Dire Wolf], which materialized beside the others.

The six other spirits regarded the newcomer with thoughtful stares.

"Let's go!" Karl ordered his spirits, and the group moved on, "All of you separate to kill monsters, while the [Alpha Dire Wolf] stays with me!"

All the spirits nodded, while the wolf simply yawned, staying close to Karl.

...

Near Karl's location, deep in the [Living Forest].

"Come on!"

"Easy kill!"

"Good job, Alexander!"

A trio of awakeners, two guys and one girl, were busy killing monsters in the forest.

Alexander led the group, his SS-Rank profession [Voidblade Sovereign] giving him unmatched power over darkness and space.

Emma wielded the S-Rank profession [Stormcaller], commanding wind and lightning, while William supported them with his A-Rank [Iron Sentinel], providing a strong defense.

[Alexander, Level 5]

[Emma, Level 4]

[William, Level 5]

Each of them were powerful, among the top in this trial.

Alexander, however, stood out not just for his strength but for his background.

His family was one of the empire's most influential ones, their strength and connections ensuring that any harm to Alexander would be avenged immediately.

The group had just finished killing a group of Level 5 Wild Bears when something unusual happened.

From behind a cluster of trees, three strange creatures emerged.

A rabbit, a bear, and a fox, all translucent and shimmering like mist, stepped forward.

Crimson eyes glowed within their ghostly forms as they moved silently through the forest.

Emma froze, "What are those things?"

The creatures didn't acknowledge them, moving as if they had somewhere else to be.

"Doesn't matter," Alexander muttered.

With a flick of his hand, he summoned the [Void blade] and slashed the fox and bear in half.

They vanished instantly in bursts of light and mist.

"What the hell were those things?" Emma asked.

"Unique type of monsters?" William tilted his head.

Alexander glanced at the notifications that appeared in front of him.

[You have slain a level 4 Nature Bear Spirit.]

[You have slain a level 4 Demonized Fox Spirit.]

"Spirits," he said flatly.

Emma's eyes widened. "Wait... spirits? Does that mean... Karl?"

Alexander smirked, "Exactly."

"That nobody was trying to attack us?!"

"No," Alexander said, pointing to the rabbit, which had turned and was now running back into the forest, "They weren't hostile. They were just passing through."

William frowned, "Then why did you kill them?"

"Because I hate that bastard," Alexander said with a laugh, "And now this gives us enough of a reason to attack him once we see him!"

"Did you see how easily I destroyed his spirits? He's nothing compared to us."

William laughed along, "You're the boss!"

"You're amazing~" Emma added with a playful smile.

The trio continued their hunt, their confidence unwavering.

...

Meanwhile...

Ding!

[Your Demonized Fox and Nature Bear have been killed.]

[Summon Cemetery: 5/20]

"Seriously?" Karl groaned, running a hand through his hair.

Losing two summons again was frustrating.

Without hesitation, he recalled all his spirits back to his side.

That was why the [Frenzied Rabbit] didn't attack the trio earlier.

It was about to fight but retreated after receiving Karl's urgent order.

A minute later, all four spirits returned to him.

Their frustration was obvious, especially the [Frenzied Rabbit].

Its neutral expression couldn't hide the burning desire for revenge that Karl noticed in its eyes.

"Wait," Karl muttered, a thought crossing his mind. "Rabbit?"

The [Frenzied Rabbit] tilted its head, looking at him curiously.

"What attacked you? Was it a monster?" Karl asked.

The rabbit shook its head, indicating that he was wrong.

"A human, then?"

It nodded.

Karl sighed deeply, "Great... well, don't wander off anymore, okay? I can't lose more of you guys."

He knew why his summons were defeated so easily.

The [Nature Bear], [Demonized Fox], and [Wild Boar] hadn't immediately attacked humans, leaving themselves open to be slaughtered.

A simple solution would be to order them to "kill any human on sight".

But doing that felt wrong.

Instead, he decided to order them to "kill any humans that wants to kill you."

Even with this, Karl knew he couldn't ignore the fact that his spirits looked like actual monsters to most people.

But that was a problem for another day.

For now, he needed more of them.

"Let's keep moving," he said to his group.

The small team resumed their hunt, targeting any monsters that crossed their path and collecting [Spirit Orbs].

Once Karl gathered enough orbs to hit 5/20 spirits, he crafted another [Spectral Blade] for extra security.

The [Novice Trial] had level-recommended zones.

[Beginning Prairie: Levels 1–2]

[Living Forest: Levels 3–7]

[Mountain of Death: Levels 8–10]

Karl was pushing the limits of the forest's difficulty.

After ten minutes, he had gathered all the orbs he needed and prepared to return to the cemetery.

But just as he closed his eyes...

Fwish!

A nearby branch lashed out toward him.

Instinctively, Karl raised his [Spectral Blade] and sliced through it before it could hit him.

"What the hell?!" he exclaimed, looking around.

That's when he realized why this place was called the [Living Forest].

Some of the trees... were alive.

[Level 7 Whip Tree]

The first tree stirred, swinging its branches wildly.

Then, as if awakened by its movement, others began to rise, their long limbs curling and reaching toward Karl like living whips.

As he approached the entrance to the [Mountain of Death], it was clear the forest's strongest monsters were coming out to play.

Karl tightened his grip on his blade.

"Get ready!" he shouted to his summons. "Kick their asses!"

His spirits growled and charged forward, ready to fight alongside him.
