Chapter 126: Chapter 126: Marry a Cripple and You’ll Be Eating Dirt

Sheng Shiwu stared at Gu Jiaojiao without a word, a flicker of pain in his eyes.

Gu Jiaojiao and Su Shuochi exchanged a glance. ’Old Three usually runs over happily when he sees us. What’s going on with him today?’

Su Shuochi shook his head, showing he didn’t know either. He gestured with his eyes for them to go over and take a look.

The couple walked up to Sheng Shiwu and saw that his face was ashen.

His forehead was covered in a cold sweat, and he had bitten his lip so hard it was bleeding.

A wave of worry washed over Grandpa Gu, and he quickly asked, "Old Three, what on earth is wrong? Are you feeling unwell?"

Sheng Shiwu remained silent, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white.

Su Shuochi turned to Gu Jiaojiao. "Honey, should we take him to the hospital?"

But Sheng Shiwu suddenly shook his head, his voice trembling and hoarse. "No, don’t. I just got back from the hospital."

With that, he turned and ran. Seeing this, Gu Jiaojiao pushed her wheelchair to follow him.

"Grandpa, you head home first. We’ll make sure Third Brother gets home safely, then we’ll be back," Gu Jiaojiao called back to her grandfather.

"Alright. Shuo Ci, you keep an eye on Jiaojiao. If anything’s wrong, take him to the hospital."

"Don’t worry, Grandpa. Jiaojiao knows what she’s doing. You be careful on your way home."

Gu Jiaojiao couldn’t catch up to Sheng Shiwu in her wheelchair. "Third Brother, if something’s wrong, just tell us! Keeping it bottled up will only make you feel worse."

It wasn’t that Sheng Shiwu didn’t want to speak. He just didn’t know how to say it, or even where to begin.

’The dear sister they had cherished so much had angered their father so badly he was hospitalized. His mother had gone home to grab some toiletries.’

’His second brother was worried and had told him to come back and check on things. His mother was on her bike while he walked, which was why he hadn’t seen her on the way.’

’As he was walking, he heard Gu Jiaojiao’s bright laughter and couldn’t resist going over to see her.’

In the hazy night, she was laughing so freely under the streetlight, yet Sheng Shiwu felt like crying.

’How wonderful it would be if she had always been their family’s sister.’

And so, what Gu Jiaojiao and Su Shuochi saw was Sheng Shiwu biting his lip, looking like he was on the verge of tears.

Since arriving in this era, Gu Jiaojiao had never been to the Sheng family’s home, so she didn’t realize they had almost followed him right to their front door.

When Sheng Shiwu saw his adoptive sister struggling to chase him in her wheelchair, he was about to stop and wait for her.

Suddenly, he heard his mother’s piercing shriek, followed by a scream from Grandma Dong next door.

"Jiaojiao, you two should go back. I have to go!" he said urgently before taking off.

Gu Jiaojiao also heard Mrs. Sheng’s piercing screams and curses. She was a little curious, but she also remembered it was about time for her husband’s silver needle treatment.

It was a little after nine in the evening. For the Gu Jiaojiao of her past life, this was still quite early.

But she had grown accustomed to sleeping early and living a life without a cell phone or nightlife.

Still, if there was a commotion, she didn’t want to miss it. "Su Shuochi, should we go take a look?"

"Jiaojiao, let’s go take a look. Judging by the way Sheng Shiwu looked, something must have happened at the Sheng family’s house."

"Alright. I didn’t realize a grown man like you was such a gossip," Gu Jiaojiao said casually.

Su Shuochi smiled indulgently. "Who’s the real gossip-lover here? We could just go home, you know."

"We’re already here. Don’t be a hypocrite and pretend you want to go home."

In the time it took to exchange those few words, they arrived at the Sheng family’s gate and saw Mrs. Sheng grappling with Grandma Dong from next door.

"I’ll kill you, you venomous witch! If you hadn’t deliberately swapped our daughters, my family wouldn’t be in this mess!"

Mrs. Sheng screamed hysterically, her hands never stopping as she lunged forward again to pull the other woman’s hair.

Her daughter had gone mad. She couldn’t bring herself to blame her own child, but the inferno of rage in her heart was impossible to suppress.

She had come rushing back in a fury, only to see her cousin leisurely strolling about to aid her digestion. Unable to contain her anger, Mrs. Sheng had marched up and slapped her.

And so, without any warning, the two had started brawling, hurling the most vicious insults at each other.

"Who can you blame for your bad bloodline? Look at your second child, he looks just like you and is always so sullen and passive-aggressive! Your daughter takes after you too—a complete good-for-nothing! Where do you get the nerve to hit me?"

Not to be outdone, Ren Xiaofang retorted. She had only come out for a walk this late because she was worried about Old Sheng.

When they were young, she had fallen for Sheng Liangyuan. In fact, she had known him before anyone else.

But Sheng Liangyuan had ignored her advances, marrying her cousin instead—a woman who was inferior to her in every way.

She liked Sheng Liangyuan too much to ever blame him, so she vented all her resentment on Ren Cuiping.

For decades, she had made trouble for her, day in and day out, just to see her suffer. Swapping their daughters back then had just been a spiteful prank, done in a fit of pique.

Back then, the Gu Family was no worse off than the Sheng Family; they were on equal footing. How could she have known the Gu Family would have the misfortune of being sent to a farm to feed pigs!

’It wasn’t my fault!’ The more Ren Xiaofang thought about it, the angrier she became. As Ren Cuiping yanked her hair, causing a sharp pain, she seized the opportunity to claw at her face.

"You... How dare you say that to me! I’m going to kill you, you vicious woman!"

And so the two "elegant" middle-aged women, whose fighting skills were laughably poor, were at it again, grappling on the ground.

In the past, their conflicts had been limited to verbal spats. The physical fights only began after Sheng Yueyue returned to the Sheng family, which was when Mrs. Sheng’s hatred for her cousin truly ignited.

"Stop it, both of you!" Mr. Dong’s voice boomed. "You are people of status, yet you’re brawling like a pair of shrews! Have you no sense of decency?"

Mr. Dong roared, unable to contain his anger. He had been engrossed in a TV show at home when his grandson ran in saying his wife was fighting with the neighbor.

But the two women, seeing red in the heat of the fight, were in no state to obediently stop.

"What are you all standing around for? Go pull them apart!" Mr. Dong ordered his sons and grandsons.

The Dong family’s Second Uncle, along with Dong Qihua, Dong Qiming, and Sheng Shiwu, all rushed forward to break up the fight.

Mrs. Sheng and Ren Xiaofang were finally pulled apart. Both had fresh scratches on their faces, and clumps of their hair had been torn out.

Even though several people held them apart, they continued to glare at each other as if they wanted to eat one another alive.

"Mom, Dad is still unconscious in the hospital! How can you be in the mood to fight right now?"

At Sheng Shiwu’s words, Mrs. Sheng’s face flushed with shame and guilt. "Xiao Wu, let’s go."

Gu Jiaojiao watched Mrs. Sheng, who had been like a raging lioness one moment and had calmed down the next.

’Mrs. Sheng was, at her core, a person with decent values. She was just incredibly pitiful.’

Then she looked at her disheveled step-grandmother, who one second ago had been like a murderous lunatic.

The next, she was as gentle as a proper lady, cuddling up to Mr. Dong. "Old Dong, dear~ don’t be angry~ Ren Cuiping is the one who’s lost her mind~"

’Tsk, tsk. What a contrast...’

"Shuoci! Are you here to see me, Yuanyuan?" Dong Yuanyuan shouted when she spotted Su Shuochi in the crowd.

Seeing that her daughter wasn’t the least bit concerned about her, Ren Xiaofang erupted in a towering rage.

"Yuanyuan, when I forbid you from marrying Su Shuochi, it’s for your own good! If you actually marry a cripple, you’ll be so poor you’ll have to eat dirt! Don’t you understand?"
