Back to the 1980s: Transmigrated as the Bigshot's Pampered Wife-Chapter 45: Chewing Out Sheng Er
Gu Jiaojiao didn’t know Su Shuochi was faking it. She thought he was genuinely exhausted from the acupuncture treatment and needed to rest.
So, while packing up the silver needles, she added, "You all can go on ahead. Shu Ci needs to sleep a little longer."
Su Shuochi pulled the towel blanket over himself and closed his eyes, feigning sleep. Inwardly, his heart bubbled with sweet happiness, tinged with a hint of apology.
’My fairy wife is so pure, not scheming like other mortals. She didn’t even catch the hidden meaning behind my clumsy excuse.’
’Who knows what our parents are thinking now.’
’Sigh! I’ll have to stick closer to my wife from now on. I can’t let any other mortals bully her.’
Ridden with guilt, Su Shuochi didn’t dare entertain any other ideas. Perhaps it was because his body felt so comfortable after the acupuncture with the silver needles, but before long, he truly fell asleep.
Gu Jiaojiao had broken out in a sweat while performing the acupuncture, so she went to take a shower. When she returned, she found the man already fast asleep.
This only made her even less suspicious of his intentions. Just as she always did, she lay down beside him.
For the past two days, Sheng Xinglian hadn’t gone home for lunch. Instead, she’d been meeting Song Zijin for a tryst in the grove behind their school.
Since Song Zijin hadn’t seen Gu Jiaojiao for two days, he once again saw his Lian’er through a mysterious, idealized filter.
Any trace of his previous disdain was long gone. Besides, they had just tasted the forbidden fruit. Having had his first taste, Song Zijin had developed an appetite for it and craved more.
"Xing’er~ This afternoon, I’ll go buy a bowl of cold noodles and bring them to the school gate for you to eat."
"Thank you, Zijin~ I’m heading to class now~"
"Lian’er, why didn’t you come home for lunch again?" Sheng Shiwen demanded, displeased.
In his extreme anger, Sheng Shiwen had forgotten that his sister didn’t want them to call her Lian’er. She wanted to be called Xingxing.
"Second Brother~ I was in a bad mood and didn’t feel like coming home to eat, so Zijin treated me to a meal~"
"Shi Wen, I was the one who wanted to treat Lian’er to lunch," Song Zijin cut in. "Or would you rather I ask her out for dinner?"
Sheng Shiwen was left speechless.
’During lunch, in broad daylight, they can’t do anything too out of line. But dinner... that would be a different story.’
"Then come home right after school this afternoon. I’ll buy you some cold noodles. Don’t eat ones from other people."
"But Second Brother, Zijin isn’t just ’other people’~" Sheng Xinglian said to Sheng Shiwen.
But her eyes, full of flirtatious charm, were fixed on Song Zijin. Her gaze seemed to say, ’Zijin, I’m already yours~’
"Shi Wen, you should get back to work," Song Zijin said. "Lian’er is upset and doesn’t want to see you."
Song Zijin shot Sheng Shiwen a provocative look, then gently stroked Sheng Xinglian’s head.
Sheng Xinglian, for her part, acted like a docile kitten. The sight infuriated Sheng Shiwen, filling him with an urgent desire to go and beat up Gu Jiaojiao.
Gu Jiaojiao, however, was oblivious to all this. She was having a wonderful dream in which, at a young age, she had become a leading authority in the world of traditional Chinese medicine in China.
Su Shuochi had only meant to feign sleep, but he had actually fallen asleep and didn’t wake up until two hours later.
Seeing his wife smiling in her sleep made him feel even better. He turned onto his side, planning to give her a kiss just as he always did.
"You’re awake?" Gu Jiaojiao opened her eyes to see the man looking at her with an embarrassed expression. She thought it was because she had slept for too long.
A glance at the clock confirmed it was already past three. "You could have woken me up. There’s nothing to be embarrassed about."
Su Shuochi was speechless.
’I was trying to kiss you and got caught red-handed! How could I not be embarrassed?!’
’There’s always tomorrow,’ he thought, deciding not to explain.
The couple washed up and came out to find Grandpa Gu and Eldest Brother Gu reading in the courtyard while Mrs. Gu was snapping green beans.
Gu Jiaojiao was overjoyed. ’Compliant patients are so satisfying,’ she thought. ’It’s a real headache when they stubbornly insist on working.’
"Grandpa, Eldest Brother, Mom, it’s really good to see you like this. I’m so happy."
"Haha..." Old Sir Gu laughed with delight.
"Jiaojiao, you’re awake. Are you two still heading to the cold noodle stall?" Mrs. Gu asked cheerfully.
"Yes, Mom. The chicken is already chopped. I’m going to slice some ginseng. Could you help us simmer the chicken soup later?"
"Of course."
Mrs. Gu didn’t refuse. Both her father-in-law and her eldest son needed to build up their strength. Since it was her daughter’s kind gesture, she accepted it with pleasure.
After slicing the ginseng and asking her mother to start the soup, Gu Jiaojiao also scooped out half a basin of rice. She was worried Mrs. Gu would be too frugal with the rice and no one would get enough to eat.
Once everything was settled, they started walking toward the textile factory gate. At four in the afternoon, the main road of the residential compound was nearly empty of pedestrians.
Gu Jiaojiao and Su Shuochi chatted happily as they walked, like any couple in the throes of new love, with an endless supply of things to say.
Suddenly, an angry roar shattered their conversation. "Gu Jiaojiao, you’re really not sick?"
Gu Jiaojiao froze for a second. The fury in the other person’s voice was so intense, so raw.
"Sheng Shiwen, you’re the one who’s sick! Why are you cursing me out of the blue? You all were the ones who abandoned me first, so why are you trying to get my attention now?"
"You jumped into the pond the other day! Shouldn’t you be seriously ill? If you’re not sick, does that mean you only pretended to jump in to get sympathy?"
Sheng Shiwen demanded furiously. Consumed by rage, he had long since parted ways with his reason.
"Sheng Shiwen, you haven’t jumped into a pond recently, so how did your brain get waterlogged? Who made the rule that you have to get sick from jumping into a pond?
"Me, jumping into a pond to save someone just to get sympathy? You must be sick in the head! If I hadn’t jumped in that day, your mother would have already drowned!
"You ungrateful brat! Why would I need to jump into a pond to get sympathy? Are you an idiot?
"None of you can even stand the sight of me. Do I really need to fish for your sympathy? Are you trying to kill me with these accusations?
"Well, let me tell you something. That sister you all used to dote on? You already hounded her to death.
"You bastard! Don’t you dare come here and lecture me! Your adopted sister has already been reincarnated and moved on.
"The person standing in front of you now is the beautiful and kind-hearted Gu Jiaojiao—someone so good that not even King Yama is willing to take her soul!
"Look closely. I am Gu Jiaojiao, not your adopted sister. If you come nagging me again, I’ll beat the living daylights out of you."
Sheng Shiwen was stunned into silence.
’What she said... actually made a lot of sense. Xingxing claimed she only pretended to jump in the pond for sympathy, but at the end of the day, she really did jump in.’
Sheng Shiwen, who had stormed over to settle the score with Gu Jiaojiao, had been so thoroughly shut down that he was at a loss for words.
He remembered his own sister’s tear-streaked face and how she had refused to come home for lunch for two days in a row.
He had wanted to give Gu Jiaojiao a harsh scolding to vent his sister’s frustrations. That’s what he and his third brother had always done in the past.
Every time they finished yelling at Gu Jiaojiao, Lian’er would genuinely smile with happiness. Afterward, he always knew it was unfair to Gu Jiaojiao.
But he felt this was what they owed their biological sister.
Sheng Shiwen had already snuck out that morning. He went by the cold noodle stall once but didn’t see Gu Jiaojiao.
He didn’t know the Su family well, and he was even less familiar with the men of the Gu family, so he was too embarrassed to just go up and ask.
He went home for lunch but still didn’t see Lian’er, so Sheng Shiwen went to the school gate to look for her.
Seeing that Lian’er was still upset, Sheng Shiwen snuck out again in the afternoon and went to the cold noodle stall. Gu Jiaojiao was still nowhere to be seen.
After much hesitation, he steeled his heart and bought a bowl of cold noodles. The flavor was absolutely explosive.
It wasn’t that he didn’t have money; it was just that ever since his biological sister returned home, all his pocket money had been spent on pleasing her.
As he ate the delicious cold noodles, Sheng Shiwen was inwardly tormented. He was starting to worry that Gu Jiaojiao might actually be sick.
