“What happened to you? Did you fall into a toilet?” Huo Linong asked, amused.
“You’re still making jokes.” Yuan Xueshan was so angry her eyes had turned red. “All this is thanks to that witch Jiang Nanfei. By golly, if anything happens to my daughter due to the shock, I’ll make her pay.”
Jinlan was already in bed, having taken a bath. She was dumbfounded and clueless about what had transpired.
“What do you mean by that? What on earth happened?”
...
Yuan Xueshan recounted the incident at the Jiang family’s residence, omitting certain parts and embellishing others. She emphasized Jiang Nanfei’s callous act of kicking Jinlan into a ditch and her appalling attitude.
As Huo Linong listened, his eyebrows furrowed, and he looked at her dubiously.
“Xue Shan, are you lying? Jiang Nanfei is a student at our school. While I haven’t interacted much with her, she’s highly regarded by the school and the teachers. Plus, she’s an excellent student. Are you sure she could have done what you just described?”
After finishing, Linong shook his head, ignoring Yuan Xueshan’s embarrassed expression. “I am not sure I can believe this unless I see it with my own eyes.”
“Are you accusing me of lying to you?” Yuan Xueshan stood up incredulously, pointing at her own face as she questioned him. “After all these years of marriage, don’t you know who I am? I’ve put so much into this family. Don’t I deserve some trust and respect?”
“Don’t start an argument, okay?” Huo Linong was a mild-mannered man. “We are just discussing the matter at hand. let’s wait till mother returns.
Yuan Xueshan couldn’t stand the mention of waiting for her mother-in-law. Annoyed, she abruptly retorts, “Hmph! Not if I can help it. As long as I’m alive, that Jiang Nanfei won’t step a foot inside this house!”
With that, she turned and stormed into the bedroom, leaving Huo Linong standing stunned in the living room.
So this was all about strife between mother and daughter-in-law, and he was caught in the crossfire?
Life is tough and sometimes he just wants to run away from home.
Huo Linong poured the fresh catch of fish into a basin and filled it with water. He decided to pack up and stay with an old school friend for a few days. With school out, it was better to dodge the unpleasantness at home.
No sooner did he step out of the house than he ran into Zhou Yongxian returning.
“Mom! You’re back!” Huo Linong knew all was lost. Why did he pack all his belongings? He could have simply left. He’s been caught by his mother now!
With her face such a picture of wrath, he was sure to bear the brunt. Just imagine, the highly respected principal and multi-year award-winning teacher has zero clout at home.
“And all thanks to your wife.” Zhou Yongxian said, clearly irritated. “Where is she? Have her come and see me.”
“Mom, Xue Shan’s in her room. She won’t even talk to me.”
With contempt, Zhou Yongxian said, “Useless. Can’t even handle your wife.”
With a bitter smile, Huo Linong admitted that not only could he not handle his wife, but he was also unable to control his son.
“Come with me.”
“Yes!”
Like an obedient student, Huo Linong followed Zhou Yongxian into her room. Once they sat down, he asked, “Mom, what do you want to talk about?”
