Chapter 56: Potential Disciple
After Dapper left, a large shadow suddenly formed beside Dora, and from within it, Deegan emerged with a wide, elated grin on his face.
"Hahaha, I taught those brats a good lesson. Unfortunately, most of them chose to become foot soldiers instead of getting punished," Deegan said, rubbing his face before tapping Dora, who had pretended not to notice him the whole time.
"Where’s that boy I took interest in? How could he disappear so quickly?" Deegan asked, scanning the crowd.
"Ugh, stop bothering me, you idiot. How should I know? I have no idea!" Dora snapped, scowling as she shouted in his face.
Deegan let out a sigh and told her not to worry. Though Dora claimed ignorance, she knew exactly who he was talking about—Dapper had just left. But she wasn’t about to hand him over so easily. With Deegan being as busy as he was, she figured he wouldn’t have time to track the boy down. That would give her disciple enough of a head start in their unspoken competition.
Suddenly, Deegan’s eyes locked on a yellow-haired boy, Shinro, whom Dora was currently attending to.
"You... I saw you with that boy earlier. Do you know him?" Deegan asked, stepping closer.
Shinro began trembling. Just being in Deegan’s presence, that overwhelming aura, made it feel like he could barely breathe.
’Dapper... that bastard! What the hell did he do to get noticed by someone like Deegan? No way. He must’ve done something outrageous.’
"H-His name is Dapper. W-We only met today. I don’t know much about him. But from what I can tell, he’s probably from an influential family," Shinro stammered. Even though he didn’t know Dapper well, the expensive weapons and the way he handed out money so freely said a lot. Two thousand Yexen—just like that? And even offered to cover Riley’s fee too.
"Mmm, I see... What’s your name?" Deegan asked.
"Shinro."
"Shinro, I’ll give you my number. If you happen to run into him again, call me," Deegan said, holding out his hand for a phone.
"U-Uh... I’ve never owned a phone before," Shinro admitted shyly, rubbing the back of his head.
"Tch. Spare me." Deegan turned from Shinro and glared at Dora. "Why the hell did you let him go?!"
They immediately started bickering, their mouths moving rapidly in an exaggerated fashion until the masked woman standing between them raised her hand, silencing them both with a simple gesture.
"You’re so mean, Dora. With that attitude, no wonder you’ll never get a boyfriend," Deegan teased, sticking out his tongue playfully as he slowly began sinking into his own shadow.
"You bastard! How dare you say that?! Who told you I don’t have a boyfriend?!" Dora exploded, veins popping in her neck. The masked woman had to hold her back while Deegan continued laughing, half his body already vanished.
’Sigh... and here I finally meet someone who actually piqued my interest. Dora, that sneaky woman. His name was Dapper, huh? I’ll find you after my mission.’ Deegan thought, just before his body disappeared fully into the shadows.
Dora’s face was still flushed red from Deegan’s taunt. Flustered, she shoved Shinro’s pass into his hand and quickly waved him away.
"Dora, you know Deegan’s never taken a disciple before, even after all the pressure and begging. And now he finally shows interest in someone... Why didn’t you tell him the boy just left?" the masked woman asked calmly.
"Hmph. As if I’d ever help him. Not even when that perverted boy had an erection from looking at me," Dora said with a pout, but her eyes drifted for a second, something lingering in her thoughts—before she quickly shook it off.

Dapper walked past several buildings when he suddenly heard someone call his name from behind. Turning around, he saw Shinro sprinting toward him, his arms flailing wildly.
Shinro finally reached him, stopping just in front and bending over as he tried to catch his breath, heaving hard.
"Why are you sweating like that?" Dapper asked, raising a brow.
"D-Deegan... he’s looking for you," Shinro panted, still gasping for air.
"Deegan? Why would he be looking for me?" Dapper asked, visibly surprised. Of all people, the last one he expected to be looking for him was Deegan.
"I don’t know, but he looked really pissed that he couldn’t find you," Shinro replied, still trying to steady his breathing.
’That doesn’t add up. How would he know anything about me?’ Dapper thought, running through every possibility but coming up blank. He resumed walking, lost in thought.
At that moment, they were walking past the dormitories of the second and third years. The academy was structured so that the third and second year dorms were closer to the veil and outer gate, in case of an attack. That way, the more experienced students could deal with any threats. The first-year dorms, however, were located deep inside the academy near the main campus.
Dapper and Shinro picked up their pace. Oddly enough, they hadn’t seen Riley along the way, even though several people who left before her were already ahead.
"Dapper... thanks for everything today. I hope I can repay you someday," Shinro said all of a sudden, prompting Dapper to pause slightly and give a small nod. He wasn’t sure how to react to genuine gratitude. In his previous life, he was an absolute prick—the definition of a villain.
As they continued walking, Dapper also noticed something odd: there weren’t any Beastkins or other races in sight. Everyone around was human.
’As expected. They want to keep the military elite purely human.’
Within minutes, they arrived at the first-year dormitories. The buildings looked rather shabby, the paint on the walls faded and peeling. There were four large buildings, all spaced a few meters apart from one another.
Dapper checked his dorm pass. It displayed "1B," indicating the second building. Shinro’s pass, on the other hand, displayed "1C."
"Man, I guess we’ll catch up another time," Dapper said, shaking Shinro’s hand. "By the way, do you have a phone? Let’s exchange numbers."
"Ahem... I don’t have a phone. Sorry," Shinro replied, looking dejected.
"That’s fine. I just recently got mine, so don’t feel bad. You’ll get one soon enough. Phones aren’t restricted—we just can’t use them in classrooms," Dapper replied casually as they parted ways, with him heading toward his dorm building.
