Chapter 278: What I Seek

The front door had just closed, and Ronan had made it as far as the stairs when a knock came from the door again.

"I’m popular today," I chuckled as I tapped Ronan to put me down. However, the man holding me was completely stiff, as if he was scared of something. "Ronan?" I asked, confused. Looking over my shoulder, I saw that the rest of my men were tense, like they were preparing for a battle.

"Put me down," I sighed, but Ronan only shook his head and held me tighter.

"No," he stated, his voice harsh from just the one word. "Chang Xuefeng, get ridda de visitor."

"No," I snapped. Something inside of me was being pulled toward the door like it was something special just for me. "Put me down so I can answer the door."

"Pudding Pop," sighed Beau as he forced a smile on his face. "I think we should listen to the demon right now. Whatever is on the other side of the door reeks of death and blood. Let the scary Angel of Death deal with it, and you can go take a nap. Sounds good?"

Shaking my head, I flung myself out of Ronan’s arms before landing on my feet. "No," I stated. "I am going to answer the door. If you don’t like it, I suggest you watch my back, but I will answer that door."

I had no idea what the guys were feeling, and normally, I wouldn’t dismiss their feelings in the matter because I trusted their instincts more than I did my own. But in this case, everything inside of me demanded that I open the door.

So I did. "Can I help you?" I asked, tilting my head way back to look up at the giant of a man. The sun was shining behind him, so I couldn’t really make out any features, but I felt every muscle in my body relax. "Are you here to make a wish?"

The man laughed softly before he dropped to one knee so that we were looking at each other in the eyes.

He had the same light blue, almost silver hair that I did, and even his eyes looked like mine. In fact, it was almost eerie how alike we looked.

"I think every wish I have ever made just came true," smiled the man as he held out his hand for me to shake. "Is it possible to come in? I won’t hurt you."

"I’m pretty sure that that is what all killers say right before they make a kill," I smiled up at him before standing back and letting the man in. He stopped as soon as he crossed the threshold and seemed to take in a deep breath.

I couldn’t hold back the smile on my face as I watched the tension melting from his figure. frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓

"You’re probably right," he chuckled as I led the way into the living room. My men stood stiff behind me, like toy soldiers waiting for an opening, but both me and the man ignored them, too lost in each other to worry about anything else. "But no matter what happens, you, at least, are safe."

He looked over my shoulder at the guys, and his face dropped into something like anger and disappointment. "Them, on the other hand, I make no promises."

"You won’t touch them," I replied, the smile gone from my face. I didn’t care how much this man looked like me or felt like home and safety. If he went after my men, I would take him out. No questions asked.

"Bloodthirsty little girl, aren’t you?" chuckled the man as he took a seat on the big couch.

"Only when it comes to protecting what is mine," I replied, raising an eyebrow as I took the couch on the other side of the coffee table. I had no idea we had so much furniture in this room, but I was willing to write it off as the house providing for me again. "And they are mine."

"For now," smiled the man. "It will depend on just how well they do next."

Cocking my head to the side, I stared down the man. "No, it doesn’t," I said. "They don’t have to prove shit to you. They are mine, end of story. And if you are going to just sit there and provoke them, then I am going to make you leave."

"You would kick me out?" asked the man, raising an eyebrow. "For those creatures?"

"Try me," I smiled back, my smile as brittle as glass.

Dante and Luca exchanged a look before Luca let out a long breath. "Excuse our lack of welcome," he finally said, stepping forward. "We’ve just been a bit on edge."

The man didn’t bother to take his eyes away from Hattie as if he were looking at a treasure that he never knew existed. "You wear your feelings on the outside. That is a great way to get killed," replied the man after a moment, not bothering to even look at the Sin. "You need to fix that."

Luca bit back all the words he wanted to say and stiffly nodded his head at the threat sitting across from his woman. "I’ll take that under advisement."

An amused smile flashed over the stranger’s face before he briefly glanced at Luca. "So you can bend without breaking. Interesting."

Dimitri tired to step forward, his hands gripping the two knives in them tighter as he was prepared to pounce on the man. However, he couldn’t move. "What de fuck?" he growled so low that only the brothers around him should be able to hear him.

"The house doesn’t want you to move," smirked the man, leaning against the back of the couch as two glasses of sweet tea appeared on the table in front of him. "It likes me..."

Dimitri bit his lip, but Luca simply shook his head. They needed to know more about the threat before they took action, and clearly, Hattie was protecting him.

"I have no quarrel with you," sighed the man as he leaned forward and picked up the tea. Twirling the glass around, he acted like he had never seen anything like it before. "But you are not what I seek."

Now it was Tank’s turn to let out a low growl, his shoulders hunching forward as he studied his prey. The hound inside of him was demanding to be let out at the implied threat to Hattie.
