Vol 4 Chapter 38: Definitely Up to No Good
Gao Sheng?
Lin Jing paused slightly after hearing the visitor's name.
What the h*ll is this guy doing in the Western Desert?
He had heard that the Demon-Slaying Temple and the Demon-Slaying Bureau were closely tied, and that many cultivators from the Bureau had come west to eliminate demons, including Cold Moon Sword Immortal, but at least she was a direct disciple of the Dao-Seeking Stage, a Fortune Gold List contender, capable of defending herself. Gao Sheng, though—what was he doing stirring up trouble…
“Take me to him,” Lin Jing shook his head. He was an old friend, after all. Whatever his reasons for coming, he still had to meet with him.
Moments later, outside Bodhi Temple.
Lin Jing saw an old friend he hadn’t met in years.
He was leading a Dragon Horse, waiting in the shade of a tree outside the temple. Judging by his cultivation, he had already reached the Late Core Formation Stage.
“Brother Gao.”
“Brother Lin!”
When Gao Sheng saw Lin Jing walk out, his eyes lit up, and he eagerly stepped forward, “It’s been forever. I heard you were nearby, so I rushed over—and you’re really here!”
“Brother Gao, what are you doing all the way out in the Western Desert?” Lin Jing was confused.
Gao Sheng hushed him and grinned, “I sneaked out here—for a major case!”
Lin Jing’s vision went dark. Knew it. Definitely up to no good.
This guy’s already in his thirties, and he’s still giving his family headaches.
“A major case, my *ss. I’ll be asking a Buddhist powerhouse to escort you back to the Ancient Kingdom. Wherever you came from, go back there.”
The Western Desert wasn’t like the Ancient Kingdom. Gao Sheng was, after all, a pretty decent old friend, and Lin Jing didn’t want him dying out here.
“Don’t!” Gao Sheng quickly said, “It really is a major case.”
“This isn’t the place to talk—let’s find somewhere, and I’ll explain everything in detail!”
Lin Jing eyed him suspiciously, but figured it couldn’t hurt to hear him out, so he led Gao Sheng to his private residence.
Once they arrived, Gao Sheng started whispering mysteriously, “Brother Lin, do you know the three great Void Mystical ghost entities of the Western Desert? The Ghost Bride, the Artifact Ghost, and the Shadow Ghost!”
Lin Jing nodded, “Of course I know. Are you saying your so-called major case is related to them?”
Gao Sheng nodded immediately, “Then, Brother Lin, do you know why the Netherworld Hall, one of the three major Demonic Sects, has been so active in the Western Desert these years?”
Lin Jing didn’t know, but judging from Gao Sheng’s expression, he could guess.
“Netherworld Hall used to be active in Qingzhou, and now they’ve come to the Western Desert. Could it be related to the three Void Mystical ghost entities?”
“Bingo. When I was investigating a case on the border of the Ancient Kingdom, I accidentally entered a Celestial Palace ruin, and from there, I obtained a vital piece of intelligence.”
“What kind of intel?”
“The Artifact Ghost, one of the three ghost entities, is suspected to be a war weapon created by an ancient Celestial Palace—an ultimate artifact spirit, capable of acting as a key to activate a Celestial Artifact.
And according to the records in the Demon-Slaying Bureau, Netherworld Hall possesses a Celestial Artifact that’s been passed down to this day. So I reasonably suspect they’ve come to the Western Desert for that Artifact Ghost!”
“If Netherworld Hall succeeds, the consequences will be unimaginable!”
Lin Jing stayed silent.
“And this kind of intel, instead of reporting it to your grandfather or the Bureau, you sneak off on your own—what the h*ll, do you think you alone can take on the Artifact Ghost? Or Netherworld Hall?”
Gao Sheng shook his head, “My grandfather went on a mission to the Cloud Sea Mountains, I couldn’t reach him at all. And the Bureau… honestly, there’s no one who can handle this matter.”
“If my guess is right, only a Dao-Seeking expert in the entire Ancient Kingdom could resolve this case. What do you think, Brother Lin? And there are no Dao-Seeking experts in the Bureau.”
“Then you came alone to the Western Desert…” Lin Jing suddenly thought of something and asked, “Cold Moon Sword Immortal?”
“Exactly. I followed Senior Sister Feng Ning here. She came west to slay demons too…” Gao Sheng whispered, “Don’t forget, her master is also a Dao-Seeking expert now.”
“Also, the Heavenly Sword Gate has a Celestial Sword that was passed down but has never been usable.”
“If I can pass this intel to Ancestor Sky-Splitting Sword, through Senior Sister Feng Ning, and she obtains the Artifact Ghost, her power would rise immensely. Even if not quite at the level of the Martial Emperor, she’d be way more than a mere new Dao-Seeker.”
Lin Jing understood now, “But then why don’t you go directly to court and report it to the Second Ancient Emperor…”
Gao Sheng paused, then muttered, “I don’t really like his policies. Compared to the Ancient Kingdom, he favors the Ancient Clan, his direct bloodline. To him, the Ancient Kingdom is basically just the vessel for his True Dragon Secret Art.”
“By comparison, I respect Ancestor Sky-Splitting Sword more. Back in the day, she trained for hundreds of years in the Demon-Slaying Bureau, her swordsmanship is peerless, and she’s renowned throughout the cultivation world for standing up for justice. Sword cultivators of the Heavenly Sword Gate have an outstanding reputation in the Ancient Kingdom. I think if there’s a chance to activate a Celestial Artifact, better to leave it with them than give it to the Ancient Clan. After all, the Heavenly Sword Gate is still part of the Ancient Kingdom.”
“Unfortunately, it seems like Ancestor Sky-Splitting Sword isn’t at the sect right now. I’m not qualified to contact her directly, so I had to settle for seeking out Senior Sister Feng Ning instead.”
“But the problem now is—before, I could still pick up on her whereabouts, but lately, she’s completely disappeared from the Western Desert. I can’t find her at all!”
Lin Jing finally understood. He looked at Gao Sheng and said seriously, “Brother Gao, don’t you know my current identity? I’m no longer a cultivator of the Ancient Kingdom. I’m now the Holy Son of the Demon Court. A Celestial Artifact like this—it’s not just the Ancient Kingdom, the Heavenly Sword Gate, or Netherworld Hall that has one. The Demon Court has them too.”
“You’re not worried that by telling me such important information, I might report it to the Demon Court and snatch this opportunity?”
Gao Sheng burst out laughing, “I don’t think you would. Back at the battle in Tongtian City, Ancestor Sky-Splitting Sword was the only one from the Ancient Kingdom who came to help you. Maybe she didn’t accomplish much, but I believe, knowing your character, you wouldn’t help the Demon Court compete with her for this chance.”
“If she can wield the Celestial Sword, it’ll be a win for all humankind.”
Lin Jing chuckled and shook his head, “Fine, since you trust me that much—and since this intel is something you discovered—I’ll pretend I never heard it.”
“So what you want now is for me to help you find Cold Moon Sword Immortal in the Western Desert, and then use her to contact Ancestor Sky-Splitting Sword, and work together to stop Netherworld Hall and the Artifact Ghost, right?”
Gao Sheng clapped his fist to his palm, “Exactly! You got it. I’m counting on you, Brother Lin.”
Lin Jing sighed. This guy… what kind of luck does he have. Looks like neither the Ancient Kingdom nor the Buddhist Sect knows the true goal of Netherworld Hall or the situation with the Artifact Ghost—but Gao Sheng found out early. frёeωebɳovel.com
A war artifact spirit from the Celestial Palace… so that thing he wanted to seal later had this kind of origin.
Sometimes, Lin Jing really didn’t know if Gao Sheng was a genius detective… or just a damn lucky idiot. Still, talking trash about the Ancient Emperor behind his back like that... seriously rebellious, man.
