Chapter 19: Second Evolution

Second Evolution

In the end, Osho's total was 95,000 credits. It wasn't too bad, all things considered. Still, he didn't enjoy going over his budget.

'It'll be worth it.' He confirmed himself.

By now, the sun had dipped below the horizon and darkness was quickly approaching. So without hesitation, Osho booked a taxi and went home.

Just like last time, the items would be delivered to his apartment directly. So not long after he entered, he got a knock on his door as his items arrived.

He opened it and the people from the Beast Emporium stepped inside with the items in tow.

Osho just had them drop everything in the living room, and they were on their way.

After locking the door, Osho flopped down on his couch and sighed. As for Gale, the bird was flying around impatiently as he wanted nothing more than to devour the items in front of him, but Osho's orders had made him stay put.

That didn't make him any less impatient though. But if Osho was being honest, he couldn't care less and just wanted his brain to cool down a bit.

After a few minutes, he finally stood up and approached the items. He decided to leave the weights and approached the other things.

The Atmosphere Dew, Sky Fragments, and Horizon Grass were all neatly packed in a single box, with the grass being put in a special capsule that allowed it to retain its qualities for some time. But naturally, it wasn't permanent.

As such, Osho decided to stop dallying.

As he looked at the items, his ability informed him on how to proceed, and his expression turned a bit strange.

He looked at Gale who was looking at the things while drooling and then back at the items before shrugging, deciding not to think too much about it.

He carried everything to his kitchen with Gale flying after him eagerly.

When he arrived, he opened the capsule of Horizon Grass and stared at the three stalks. Now that he thought about it, they kinda resembled Asparagus...

He set them down and took out a skillet, turned on the stove, and allowed it to heat up. At the same time, he took a clean bowl and opened the bottle of Atmosphere Dew before pouring it in. The Dew didn't have a smell per se, but it seemed to purify the air around them, making breathing a lot more appealing.

However, Osho didn't dwell on that as he took out his trusty mortar and pestle, placed the sky fragments inside, and started to smash them.

To his surprise, the fragments seemed to hold more... they seemed to hold more. Each fragment was barely the size of his fingers, yet when he shattered them until they became powder, the quantity of powder released was a lot more than what should have been available.

Chalking it up to Mana being weird, he returned to the Horizon Grass and placed the three stalks into the skillet, not bothering to rinse them.

A sizzling sound immediately emerged as the stalks started to get fried, but they blackened at a noticeably slower pace than normal Asparagus.

Osho tilted his head and turned up the heat. A few seconds later, he entered multitasking mode as he briefly stirred the stalks before turning his attention to the powdered Sky Fragments. He poured the powder into the Atmosphere Dew and brought out a whisk. He started mixing before turning his attention back to the Horizon Grass and stirred it some more before returning to mixing.

He did this for a while until the mixture was adequately mixed and the stalks were cooked properly.

He grabbed a plate, placed the stalks side by side, and poured the 'sauce' all over them, making sure nothing remained in the bowl.

He looked at Gale who had been on the edge of the counter, his small body trembling as it seemed to take him all his willpower to not immediately rush forward and devour everything that was on the plate.

Osho smiled before taking the plate back to the living room and placed it on the ground. Then he looked at Gale who had followed with his eyes still trained on the plate.

"Eat." The instant the words left his mouth, Gale shot forward and started devouring the food like he hadn't been fed in weeks.

Osho chuckled and couldn't help but reflect on the process of preparing the ingredients.

'Who could have imagined I'd need to cook for the evolution process? No wonder evolving beasts is such a difficult venture, how could one even come up with something like this?' He wasn't sure if he felt amused or exasperated. Probably both.

In no time, Gale had devoured everything without leaving a morsel on the plate. Immediately he did so, Osho felt that the bird was hit with a feeling of drowsiness as his body swayed.

He quickly picked him up and Gale blinked twice before his eyes closed and he fell asleep. Osho smiled fondly and carried Gale to his bed. He placed him on his pillow and stared at the sleeping bird for a moment. He was both excited and a bit worried.

Excited because he wanted to see just how Gale would be after the evolution, and worried because he didn't know how long he'd be asleep, now did he know if there would be a big change when he woke up. He could explain a minor physical change to anyone, but if it was a big change, like say getting another pair of wings, or suddenly doubling in size, then explaining would be a lot more difficult.

He sensed their bond and indeed, Gale wasn't waking up any time soon. As such, he decided to make himself dinner.

After that, he went to the box containing Gale's weight training gear and tried to pick it up, but he was startled by the Wright and almost fell. It wasn't that he couldn't carry it at all, but it was one of those situations where someone would underestimate the weight of something and fail to lift it with the appropriate strength, causing them to stumble.

After regaining his bearing, Osho lifted it properly this time and managed to put it on his dining table with some effort.

He stared at the box for a few seconds before opening it and staring at the various pieces of gear inside.

He started bringing them out one by one and true to his suspicions, each piece was surprisingly heavy as the metal that made it up was very dense.

'When I was leaving, he told me the metal was considerably light due to being attuned to the sky. This is not light.' He sighed. Then again, maybe he felt that way because he was just weak. If be gave it to Mrs Jane to handle, she'd probably agree about it being light.

Shaking the thought out of his head, he arranged the pieces neatly on the table and looked at the box. The fact that the pieces of metal didn't fall straight through the box meant that it wasn't a normal box.

'Hm, it should make a good storage tool. I should probably use it to keep Gale's stuff for the meantime.' The thing was, Gale didn't have a lot of stuff.

He'd already taken out the training weights, and he didn't have the energy to put them back in.

'I remember that you can buy armor for beasts...' He tilted his head at the thought and took out his phone.

He went online and entered a virtual shop dedicated to beast taming. However, the various items on it were grayed out, even the ones he could afford.

The reason for this was that only people with an official beast-taming license could access the store, and you could only get such an item once one reached the Apprentice rank which was when one was considered a 'real' Beast Tamer. The license acted as an identification for beast tamers and came with a number of benefits and responsibilities. Among the benefits, being able to buy certain beast taming items online was allowed.

Osho always found the line between what could and couldn't be bought to be odd. He could buy rare treasures and resources with seemingly no restrictions, the only visible restriction being his wallet. He found it strange because, unlike him, most people who bought treasures for their beasts didn't know what they were doing, and if they weren't careful, they ran the risk of poisoning the creature by feeding it too many treasures under the idea that they were strengthening the beast.

Such a thing was fairly common and was frequently warned against, yet there were never any strict regulations on who could and who couldn't buy treasures for their beast.

However, the moment the line for equipment related to combat was crossed, suddenly things became a lot more complicated. Whether it was armor, weapons, or simple enhancement items, they couldn't be accessed without a license.

Not that he didn't understand the logic behind it. For starters, most wouldn't be able to even use many of the items regardless of whether or not they could afford it. Second, for the few that could use the equipment, it was likely that they might accidentally or intentionally use said equipment and destroy public property, something that had happened more than a few times in the past.

He just didn't understand why the same restrictions didn't apply to treasures. Not that he was complaining too much. After all, it's the lack of restrictions that made it possible for him to procure the items needed for Gale's evolutions.

Shaking his head, he decided to sit down and start cultivating.
