Becoming The Strongest Using My Would-You-Rather System!-Chapter 17 - Saving The Young Miss
As Theo finished speaking, a flicker of hesitation flashed through the girl’s expression.
She kept running at full speed, seemingly with no intention of slowing down at all.
Theo’s expression darkened.
’She better listen,’ he thought, clenching his jaw.
Despite his anger, he stayed focused as he formed another lightning bolt in the air. He glanced at one of the front-runner lizards and released it.
It shot through the air, hitting the sand just in front of it.
The sand instantly turned into sharp glass and fused the lizard’s feet to the ground, trapping it.
’’That wasn’t a kill,’’ Theo cursed, forcing more mana out of his body.
Even though he was forming another lightning bolt now, he knew he didn’t have many shots left in him.
Just as the girl was about to reach him, she gritted her teeth and spun around, sliding to a halt a few feet in front of him.
She didn’t look at him or say anything.
Instead, she swung her spear forward, piercing deep into the skin of the closest lizard.
The lizard kept pushing though, forcing her back.
Another lizard lunged toward her from the left side, its large jaws wide open.
Just before it reached her, a lightning bolt tore through its head, disintegrating it completely.
’Four dead, two severely injured,’ he thought. ’I have to make these lightning bolts quicker before we get overrun.’
Theo gritted his teeth, focusing deeply as he tried something he’d never done before.
’Let’s try the next step!’
He raised both hands simultaneously, forcing out two separate streams of mana.
Slowly, two yellow lightning bolts started forming in the middle of the air, each flanking one of his sides.
At the same time, the girl pulled her spear back and finished the injured lizard by slicing its throat.
Before she even got the chance to strike another creature, a lizard climbed over its companion’s corpse while two more flanked both sides.
’’There’s too many...’’ she muttered, her voice hoarse and exhausted.
She raised her spear in front of her, trembling from fear as she closed her eyes and waited for death.
Suddenly, loud crackling noises flew past her, followed by wild screeches.
She opened her eyes instantly, finding charred corpses on her left and right, leaving only one in front of her.
’’What the fuck are you doing?!’’ Theo shouted from behind, watching her panic. ’’Raise your spear!’’
The last lizard lunged straight toward her.
She froze for a moment, but quickly raised the tip of her spear in front of her.
The airborne lizard couldn’t dodge.
Its throat landed straight on the spear’s tip, spraying blood across the sand.
The spear’s shaft bent under the force as the lizard’s weight slammed into her.
But it didn’t die immediately.
The creature shrieked, claws flailing wildly as it tried to crawl down the spear toward her.
The girl didn’t back down either though, gritting her teeth as she twisted the spear.
Blood splattered everywhere as the lizard’s corpse slid down the spear.
’’There’s three more!’’ Theo shouted, beads of sweat dripping down his face.
’’I can’t go on!’’ the girl said, her voice breaking. ’’And my weapon is unusable.’’
Theo’s heart pounded in his ears, a slight ache coming from his core.
’’Drop the spear and move behind me,’’ he ordered, raising his hands.
The remaining lizards clearly hesitated for a moment. But then, a hint of madness appeared in their eyes as they dashed forward without any regard for their lives.
’These lightning bolts will be the last,’ he thought.
Before he could even finish casting his spells, three bright blue colors flashed past his eyes.
The charging lizards were instantly blasted away, their bodies tumbling back towards the ocean like ragdolls.
Theo’s half-formed lightning bolts flickered for a moment and faded away.
A small smile formed on his face as he saw several people wearing green uniforms approach them.
’The military,’ he thought, letting out a deep breath of relief. ’I survived.’
His eyes darted over to the girl, who had sat down on the ground behind him.
’Even she made it somehow...’
Theo turned back around, staring at the four approaching soldiers as he felt the adrenaline in his body fade.
As they got close, he opened his mouth to greet them.
But before he could even say anything, they rushed past him.
’’Young Miss!’’ a middle-aged female soldier said, dropping to one knee beside her. ’’Are you alright?’’
Theo paused for a moment, his brain short-circuiting.
Young miss?
The other soldiers stood around her like a shield while scanning the area for any other threats.
’’I’m fine,’’ the girl said, her voice hoarse. ’’Just exhausted.’’
’’We’ll need to get you checked out immediately,’’ the same female soldier said, slowly pulling the girl up.
Just as they were about to start walking toward the city, the girl spoke up again.
’’Wait,’’ she said, her voice low.
The soldiers around her stopped, glancing at her in confusion.
She turned her head toward Theo and raised her arm weakly toward him.
’’Take care of him too,’’ she said. ’’I would’ve been dead without him.’’ 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
All four soldiers turned to look at Theo, who just stood there, still breathing heavily from the fight.
’’Of course, Miss,’’ one of the soldiers said, nodding to the others before detaching from the group.
The soldier, a very muscular middle-aged man, stopped a few feet in front of him. His eyes scanned the battlefield for a moment, nodding slowly before his gaze fell on Theo.
’’Each charred corpse was your doing, right?’’ he asked, a hint of curiosity in his voice.
Theo raised an eyebrow in surprise, but nodded.
A warm smile appeared on the middle-aged soldier’s face. ’’You did really well for a low-rank hunter.’’
Then his gaze moved to Theo’s shoulder. ’’Follow me back, we’ll get you treated there.’’
Theo nodded slowly, relieved. ’’Thank you.’’
’’It’s nothing,’’ the man chuckled, patting Theo’s back. ’’You have no idea how much trouble you saved us from.’’
Theo glanced at the soldier strangely as they began following in the others’ footsteps toward the city.
’That girl... she was from an influential family?’ he thought, tilting his head. ’And she still acted so rashly before?’
Many questions coursed through his head, some of which he’d likely never get an answer to.
’I hope she compensates me for this.’
Not only had he saved her life, but if others got to know she baited a dozen creatures over to another hunter, her reputation would be in ruins.
Theo clicked his tongue and pushed the thoughts aside.
None of that mattered right now.
’I survived,’ he thought, balling his fists. ’And I improved significantly.’
