Chapter 108: Chapter 108: Scrap Yard

Nina Thorne’s lips twitched into a bitter smile.

She dragged her stiff body back to the bed and sat with her back against the headboard, all sleepiness gone.

Hugging her knees, she buried her head, and traitorous tears fell silently once more, soaking the bedsheets.

At this moment, Nina Thorne felt both heartbroken and strangely calm.

Her hesitant heart instantly made a brave decision.

’Since the woman he loves is back, I won’t cling to the position of Mrs. Kane. I’ll just give it back.’

’Anyway, I’ll be going with the film crew to Vistara for the shoot.’

’By the time I get back, he’ll probably be the one to bring up divorce.’

-

That night, Nina Thorne tossed and turned, but eventually managed a fitful sleep.

When she woke up, she had a WeChat message from Justin Kane.

"My dear Nina, sleep well. Something came up and I have to take care of it, so I won’t be back tonight."

The message was sent at four in the morning.

Nina Thorne put down her phone with a cold expression, not bothering to reply.

After washing up, she went downstairs and saw Justin Kane walking into the hall, his face etched with exhaustion.

Nina Thorne stood there, watching him quietly without a word.

"You’re up so early."

Justin Kane walked up to her, his weary eyes still holding a gentle warmth.

A stark contrast to the decisiveness he showed when he left last night.

Nina Thorne gave a faint tug at the corner of her lips. "It’s not early. It’s almost eight, and you’ve been busy all night."

Her words were tinged with a slight sarcasm.

"Upset?" Justin Kane’s lips curved into a half-smile as he glanced at her.

Only then did Nina Thorne’s gaze fall on him in earnest.

He was wearing only a wrinkled white shirt with the top two buttons undone, his suit jacket draped casually over his arm.

It looked as if he hadn’t slept all night.

But even so, it did nothing to diminish his breathtaking good looks.

This was the first time Nina Thorne had seen him look so casual and tired.

’It’s hard not to imagine that he and the woman he loves spent the night doing... indescribable things.’

At that thought, an uncontrollable pang of pain shot through Nina Thorne’s heart.

’This marriage hasn’t even lasted long, and it’s already about to end.’

’It’s...’

’...dying like an unsprouted embryo.’

"No."

Nina Thorne coolly withdrew her gaze, her attitude distant as she walked toward the dining room.

Justin Kane tossed his suit jacket onto the back of the sofa and followed her, placing a breakfast container on the dining table.

"Look what I bought." Justin Kane opened the takeout box, and a fragrant aroma wafted out.

It was steaming hot sampan congee, its scent filling the air.

This was Nina Thorne’s favorite. She hadn’t expected him to go out of his way to buy it from that specific place.

Miss King usually made it for her.

But from the packaging, she could tell this portion was from the shop near Sylport University.

The drive from there back to the villa would take at least an hour.

The crucial point was that Sylport University was just as far from his company, but it was very close to Mercywell Hospital.

’Obviously, he spent the night with April Graham at the hospital and just picked this up for me on his way back.’

"Thanks, but you can have it. I don’t feel like having congee today."

Nina Thorne pushed the congee away and took a sip of her milk.

’After spending the night with the one he loves, he still remembered me, his contractual wife.’

’Should I say he’s being thorough?’

’Or has he only ever treated me like a brother caring for a sister?’

’But he cared for me all the way into bed...’

Nina Thorne’s heart ached unexpectedly again. She gripped the glass so tightly that her knuckles turned white.

"Are you not feeling well?" Justin Kane asked, his expression tense.

Nina Thorne didn’t even look at him, so she missed his concerned gaze. She just shook her head faintly. "No, I just don’t want to eat it."

Justin Kane sensed her coldness. His thick brows furrowed slightly, and he was about to speak.

Nina Thorne’s phone, sitting on the table, chimed. A text message notification appeared on the screen.

[Nina Thorne, I knew you still loved me...]

The number wasn’t saved in her contacts.

Justin Kane recognized it at a glance as Cole Kane’s number.

Nina Thorne picked up her phone, unlocked the screen, and glanced at the message.

[Nina Thorne, I knew you still loved me. Otherwise, why would you still have those memories of us on your Weibo?]

Cole Kane’s confidence was so ridiculous it made her laugh, and she couldn’t help but let the corners of her mouth curve up.

However, in Justin Kane’s eyes, she looked happy.

’They’ve gotten in touch?’

Justin Kane’s pupils contracted slightly.

He reached out, pulled out the chair opposite her, and sat down. With a raised brow and a slight smirk, he probed, "Cole Kane contacted you?"

Nina Thorne put down her phone, lifted her gaze to look at him coolly, and hummed in agreement without explaining.

’An explanation would be pointless.’

’He wouldn’t care anyway.’

And she wouldn’t let a doomed marriage devastate her like it did last night.

Justin Kane clenched his jaw, a glint of mockery in his eyes. "Still in contact. It seems he didn’t hurt you badly enough before."

His words were venomous and sharp.

Having grown accustomed to his mature and gentle side over the past two months, Nina Thorne had almost forgotten that this venomous tongue was his true nature.

Not to be outdone, she retorted, "I know what I should let go of and what I shouldn’t. I don’t need a lecture from you."

"So, have you let go, or not?" Justin Kane’s voice was cold, his handsome face tense.

A frosty light flashed in his eyes, and a chilling aura emanated from him.

Nina Thorne understood. Now that the woman he loved was back, he was no longer as indulgent with her as before.

"Whether I’ve let go or not doesn’t seem important, does it? Our marriage could end at any moment anyway." Nina Thorne choked up, a tightness gripping her chest.

Justin Kane’s face darkened, his deep eyes filled with restrained forbearance. "Mrs. Kane, you certainly are always thinking about ending things."

Hearing him say that, Nina Thorne felt a surge of indignation.

He was the one who had been wrapped up with his beloved for the past two days, so how did it become her fault for wanting to end things?

She couldn’t bear such an accusation and started to retort, "You and April Graham..."

Before she could finish, the sound of Justin Kane’s ringtone cut her off.

He glanced at the caller ID, and his expression turned grave, as if the call was very important.

"We’ll talk later."

He tossed out the sentence, got up, and strode quickly upstairs, leaving Nina Thorne with only the sight of his briskly departing back.

Nina Thorne clenched her fists, a bitter, self-mocking smile touching her lips.

’He’s so anxious about that call. It must be April Graham again.’

’Fine.’

’It shouldn’t be long now before he brings up divorce.’

Nina Thorne tried not to overthink it and decided to tell him later about her work trip to Vistara tomorrow.

Less than half an hour later,

Justin Kane came downstairs, having changed into a dark suit. He was once again impeccably dressed and looking as distinguished as ever.

Seeing him, Nina Thorne stood up to meet him and opened her mouth. "I have something to tell you."

Justin Kane’s brows knitted. Fearing she was about to say she wanted to get back together with Cole Kane, he cut her off in a deep voice, "I have something to take care of at the office. We can talk when I get back."

’He really is busy.’

Nina Thorne lost the desire to continue the conversation and nodded faintly. "Okay."

Justin Kane gave her a deep look. The weariness in his eyes hadn’t faded. He suddenly reached out, patted her head, and said in a husky voice,

"Nina, be smart. Don’t be foolish like you were five years ago."

Nina Thorne’s heart trembled slightly.

She blinked, staring at him blankly, unable to decipher the meaning of his words.

But she had no chance to ask.

Justin Kane’s handsome, chiseled face was tense as he turned and walked away quickly.

Soon, the sound of an engine starting up in the courtyard faded into the distance.

Justin Kane called Assistant Cheney. "What’s the situation now? Wasn’t everything resolved last night?"

"There’s a problem with the shareholders. We’ve investigated, and it seems to be related to the Madam."

"We held an emergency shareholders’ meeting last night, but word somehow got to the Madam. This morning, the directors who had already agreed to our terms backed out."

"Find out who it was. Proceed with the plan and reclaim the shares." Justin Kane’s sharp eyes narrowed, a fierce light within them.

His well-defined fingers ended the call. He tossed the phone onto the seat and pinched the tense space between his eyebrows.

The next second, April Graham called again, protesting indignantly, "Justin, why didn’t you come see me last night?"

"Are you really trying to force me to kill myself? You promised me you’d agree to anything I asked."

"..."

Justin Kane’s eyes snapped open, revealing a sharp glint. He gritted his teeth slightly. "Agree to divorce my wife for you?"

"April Graham, it’s been eight years. Have you only gotten older and not any wiser?"

April Graham flew into a rage. "You owe me! Are you going back on your word?"

That day at the hospital, she had demanded that Justin Kane go home and get a divorce.

He had said, "Fine. It’s just a divorce."

She thought he had actually agreed, but before she could celebrate, he had looked at her with hostile eyes and added another sentence.

"Over my dead body."

’So what’s so special about that woman that he would say something like that!’

"If you need a man, go find one. Don’t come looking for me."

Justin Kane’s voice was icy and ruthless. "I’m not a recycling station for rejects."

With that, he mercilessly hung up.

Hearing his words, April Graham trembled with rage, grinding her teeth in hatred.

-

Nina Thorne spent half the day organizing all the materials she needed to take to Vistara.

Once she was done packing, she had even less desire to wallow in her draining emotions, so she just drove out.

Now, she headed straight to the hospital to see Master Thorne.

"Grandpa, look what I brought you!" 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

Nina Thorne said with a smile as she pushed open the door to the hospital room, holding up the tasty food she had brought.

But when she saw who was inside the room, the smile instantly vanished from her face.

Justin Kane was sitting by the hospital bed, and both he and her grandfather turned to look at her in unison.

"Nina, why are you so late? This young man Justin has been here for ages." Master Thorne frowned suspiciously, but his expression was still kind and benevolent.

Nina Thorne froze for a few seconds before walking to the bed and handing what she was carrying to Mr. Wood.

"Grandpa, I went and bought you your favorite steamed dumplings," Nina Thorne said with an obedient smile.

Master Thorne’s eyes lit up, and he looked incredibly pleased. "Good, good, good. In that case, Grandpa forgives you."

Seeing him act like a big kid, Nina Thorne didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

As she was smiling, her gaze fell on Justin Kane, a hint of surprise in her eyes.

They exchanged a look but said nothing.

’Of course, he’s playing along and not mentioning the divorce in front of Grandpa.’

After keeping Master Thorne company for a while, the two of them left the room together.

After walking a short distance, Nina Thorne stopped, turned to look at him with calm eyes, and spoke politely.

"Thank you for coming to see my grandfather."

Justin Kane’s eyes darkened slightly, and his thin lips twitched. "We’re married. Your grandfather is my grandfather too."

Nina Thorne was somewhat moved.

’Putting aside the matter of the woman he loves...’

’When it comes to how he treats me and Grandpa, Justin Kane is truly faultless.’

’It’s not his fault that he doesn’t love me. I’m the one who got too invested in my role as Mrs. Kane.’

Nina Thorne’s attitude softened, and a faint smile appeared on her lips. "Thank you. But how did you know he was hospitalized?"

"I always pay close attention to matters concerning Mrs. Kane."

Seeing her attitude soften, most of the resentment in Justin Kane’s heart dissipated.

He looked at her with a doting gaze and flicked her on the forehead. "You’re the only one who’s always treating me like the enemy."

Nina Thorne rubbed her smarting forehead and grumbled, "I do not! You’re the one who..."

Her chest heaved, but her words suddenly trailed off.

Her gaze was fixed on a figure walking toward them from behind him.
