Chapter 15: Chapter 15: Always Welcome to a Conjugal Life

CRASH!

The cup shattered all over the floor.

Serena Kane fell to the floor, clutching her forehead in pain. Blood seeped through her fingers and dripped onto the ground.

"Nina Thorne! Are you crazy?!"

Serena Kane looked up and glared at her, roaring hysterically. Her ferocious expression was smeared with blood, completely devoid of her usual delicate demeanor.

Nina Thorne got off the bed, walked over, and looked down at her coldly. "Compared to what you’ve done to me over the years, I’m letting you off easy by not smashing your head in."

A cold hatred seeped from her eyes, making Serena Kane’s heart shudder.

She gasped for breath in pain, growing agitated. "I don’t know what you’re talking about! If Cole finds out you hurt me, he’ll never let you get away with this, and he definitely won’t register the marriage with you."

With an air of cool, condescending composure, Nina Thorne let out a cold laugh. "It’s not that he won’t register our marriage. It’s that I, Nina Thorne, don’t want him anymore!"

"Nina Thorne, you bitch..." Serena Kane’s chest heaved with anger, and for a moment, she was too furious to speak.

Suddenly, the door to the hospital room was thrown open.

Cole Kane walked in, dressed in an expensive slate-blue suit. The scent of blood in the air and the sight of Serena Kane’s state made him jolt in shock.

"Brother, you’re finally here."

Serena Kane saw him too, and her resentful glare instantly transformed into a look of fragile pitifulness as she began to cry grievance.

"How did this happen?" Cole Kane hurriedly crouched down to check her injuries.

Sobbing, Serena Kane said, "It’s not Nina Thorne’s fault. It was me. She told me to kneel, and I should have. I shouldn’t have gone against her wishes."

’So manipulative,’ Nina Thorne scoffed inwardly.

Not to be outdone, she shot back, "Weren’t you the one who came here because you were afraid I’d register my marriage with Cole? You told me he’d divorce me later to make me back down, didn’t you?"

Tears welled under Serena Kane’s eyelids as she whimpered in a wronged, fragile voice, "I didn’t..."

"You didn’t? Do you dare listen to the recording..."

"Enough!"

Before Nina Thorne could finish, Cole Kane cut her off. "Nina Thorne, you’re becoming more and more malicious. It’s making me seriously question whether we should even go through with this marriage registration!"

Cole Kane’s furious attitude was unprecedentedly fierce.

In the past five years, no matter how much Cole Kane had disregarded her, he had never spoken to her like this.

Nina Thorne stared at him in astonishment, as if looking at a stranger.

The young man who had once promised her father he would take good care of her and cherish her was now filled with nothing but disgust and hatred for her.

For a moment, Nina Thorne felt a sense of dazed disbelief.

It wasn’t that she was sad.

Instead, she was afraid. Afraid that her parents, who had doted on her and treated her like the most precious thing in the world, would see this from heaven and still worry.

"I thought you were just throwing a little tantrum, but I never imagined you hated Serena so much you’d attack her this viciously!"

Cole Kane straightened up and growled at Nina Thorne, showing no pity whatsoever.

Nina Thorne sneered. "Yes, I hate her. But of course, I despise you even more."

"In my eyes, you’re just a pair of shameless scumbags. A perfect match!"

"What did you say!"

Cole Kane’s face flushed with rage as he shoved Nina Thorne forcefully.

Nina Thorne lost her balance, stumbled back a few steps, and fell onto the hospital bed.

Fortunately, the bed was covered in soft bedding, so she wasn’t hurt.

However, the movement inevitably pulled at the old wound on her back, and the pain made her eyes redden.

Cole Kane froze for a second. He reached out as if to help her up, then retracted his hand. In a condescending, commanding tone, he said:

"You’re entirely to blame for this. Apologize properly to Serena, and we’ll still register the marriage tomorrow as planned."

SLAP!

Nina Thorne got up from the bed, her arm swinging in a swift arc as she slapped Cole Kane across the face.

Cole Kane was stunned. "Are you insane? You even hit me?"

"So what if I hit you? Did I need to make an appointment?" Nina Thorne glared at him, her eyes icy and completely devoid of their former meekness.

Cole Kane threatened, "Are you saying you don’t want to get married anymore!"

"Get married? Are you out of your mind? I already swore an oath that I would never marry you." Nina Thorne clenched her fists at her sides, her gaze cold and merciless, each word she spoke landing with solid weight.

Her words were laced with ultimate determination and disappointment.

Meeting her gaze, Cole Kane’s heart trembled. A sense of fear washed over him, as if he were about to lose her completely.

"Nina Thorne, I..." For a split second, Cole Kane’s heart raced with panic.

"Brother, it hurts so much..."

Serena Kane suddenly cried out and her body slumped to one side, looking as if she were about to faint at any moment.

Cole Kane hurriedly knelt to support her, and she collapsed right into his arms, gripping his hand tightly. "Brother, am I going to die?"

"Serena, don’t be afraid. You’re not going to die. I’ll take you to a doctor." Cole Kane steadied himself, dispelling his earlier unease.

’Once Nina Thorne cools down, she’ll come back and beg me for forgiveness on her knees.’

He picked Serena Kane up and, before leaving, said to Nina Thorne in a disappointed tone, "You should reflect on your actions. Once you’ve thought it through, go kneel and apologize to Serena. It’s your birthday tomorrow, and I’ll still go with you to register our marriage."

With that, he strode away, carrying Serena Kane.

Nina Thorne’s expression was blank, but inwardly, she found the situation laughable.

’This was the man she had loved for five years?’

"Nina Thorne..."

Justin Kane’s tall, stern figure hurried into the hospital room.

The mess on the floor hadn’t been cleaned up yet, and he took it all in at a glance.

His heart was in his throat as he came to stand before Nina Thorne. "Are you hurt anywhere?"

She saw that his composed face was filled with worry.

’He seems very worried about me.’

Nina Thorne felt his concern, her beautiful eyes fixed on him. "Don’t worry, I’m fine."

She carefully recounted what had just happened to Justin Kane.

After she finished, she said half-jokingly, "What’s wrong? So concerned about me. Afraid you’ll be widowed at a young age?... Ah!"

Justin Kane gave her a punitive little tap on the forehead. "Don’t talk such nonsense again."

Nina Thorne ducked her head and mumbled an, "Oh."

’So I was overthinking it.’

’And here I was, thinking Justin Kane had changed.’

’Compared to before, he’d only gotten older. His iron-faced heartlessness hadn’t changed a bit.’

"Not bad. At least you’ve made some progress. You know to use a tool when you hit someone now," Justin Kane’s pleasant voice suddenly praised.

Nina Thorne was pleasantly surprised. "You don’t think I was too malicious for injuring Serena Kane?"

Justin Kane’s face was stern. "She deserved it."

Nina Thorne froze, looking up at him, tracing his sharp, cold features with her eyes.

His aura was still noble and elegant, yet it was different from before.

He was on her side now.

...

Justin Kane took her back to the villa.

Nina Thorne was incredibly happy.

Although the doctor had recommended more rest, she had been in the hospital for six days and was indeed well enough to be discharged to recover at home.

This way, she could avoid Cole Kane’s incessant pestering. She couldn’t be bothered to see him again.

"I’m going upstairs to take a shower." Nina Thorne started for the stairs, then remembered something and said to Justin Kane, "Oh, right. In one of the boxes we moved from the other place, there’s a package. Can you open it for me?"

"Okay."

Justin Kane took off his jacket, draping it over his arm as he watched Nina Thorne’s graceful figure ascend the stairs.

His magnetic voice asked, "Is your hand okay? Need help washing up?"

Nina Thorne’s steps faltered. Her cheeks suddenly grew scorching hot, as if she were being roasted by a fire.

She hastily blurted out, "No!" and scurried up the stairs.

Watching her fleeing figure, the corners of Justin Kane’s lips lifted into a small smile.

He quickly found the package in the storage room and returned to the bedroom.

The sound of running water came from the bathroom.

Nina Thorne was still showering.

Justin Kane tore open the outer shipping box and took out a pink product box.

On the box was an indescribable image.

A scorching heat suddenly ignited in Justin Kane’s dark eyes.

Just then, the bathroom door opened.

Nina Thorne emerged from the bathroom wearing a white silk slip dress. Her freshly washed face was flushed, as radiant and translucent as a peeled egg, and the clean scent of her body wash was enough to make one’s blood boil.

"What’s that you’re holding?" Nina Thorne asked casually, glancing at the object in Justin Kane’s hands.

Justin Kane held it up in front of her. "Your package..."

Nina Thorne took a closer look, and her mind went completely blank.

A smile played on Justin Kane’s lips. He leaned close to her ear, his breath warm and moist, his voice husky and suggestive. "Wife, if you’re ever in need, you’re always welcome to come to me to... fulfill our marital duties."
