Belated Moonlight: He Regretted Only After I Left-Chapter 100: So What If It’s an Engagement? Even Marriage Can End in Divorce! (Bonus - )
A few days later, Jasper Hawthorne was finally ready to be discharged from the hospital.
He changed out of the blue and white striped hospital gown and put on a dark gray casual outfit, which made his face still look a bit pale.
However, the sternness between his brows had returned, although a faint, hard-to-detect darkness lingered deep in his eyes.
Grace Quinn arrived early, bustling around and helping to tidy up scattered belongings.
"Jasper, I’ve taken care of the procedures. You just sit and rest. Don’t strain your wound," she said, as she packed the last toiletry item into a bag, her eyes subtly drifting towards May Wright, who sat on the sofa with an unhappy expression.
May Wright was wearing a tight dark purple sweater today, covered with a cashmere shawl. Her hair was impeccably styled, yet her brows and eyes carried unspeakable sorrow and faint resentment.
She looked at her son’s thin cheeks, her heart aching, then glanced at Grace Quinn’s diligent manner, comparing her to a certain someone who hadn’t shown up, causing the scales in her heart to tilt even more heavily.
"Yes, Jasper, listen to Grace. Your chest wound isn’t a trivial matter. You need to take good care of it," May Wright sighed, sitting beside Jasper and hesitating to speak further.
Jasper remained expressionless, merely uttering "Hmm," as his gaze rested on the scenery outside the window, lost in thought.
The room was quiet for a moment.
Grace’s eyes flickered as if she suddenly remembered something, softly exclaimed "Oh," and casually mentioned to May Wright, "Auntie, did you see today’s financial news? It seems... quite lively."
May Wright, typically disinterested in such matters, waved her hand dismissively, "News? I don’t have the mind to watch that."
Grace bit her lip, lowering her voice, "It’s about Shane Donovan and Stella Sterling... The news said Shane Donovan bought a pink diamond ring at Sotheby’s auction last night, supposedly as an engagement gift for Stella Sterling. The price was apparently... eight hundred million."
"Eight hundred million?!" May Wright suddenly raised her voice, her eyes widening in amazement, "A ring?! Eight hundred million?!"
She acted as if she’d heard some wild exaggeration, "This... this Stella Sterling, how could she even take it?! Isn’t it just wasteful spending?! No matter how wealthy the Donovan Family is, they shouldn’t burn money like this!"
Grace quickly stepped forward to gently pat May Wright’s back, soothingly saying, "Auntie, don’t get agitated. Maybe... maybe it’s what Stella wanted? After all, they are about to get engaged..."
Her words seemed to be comforting, but they actually added fuel to the fire in May Wright’s heart.
May Wright’s brow furrowed tighter, immediately grabbing Jasper’s arm, "Jasper! Did you hear that?! Eight hundred million! For a ring! My goodness! This Stella Sterling... I really misjudged her before... How could she be so vain?! Thank goodness you split from her! If she had really joined our Hawthorne Family, would our assets be enough to buy a few rings for her?!"
Jasper’s body stiffened almost imperceptibly for a moment, his hand on his knee slowly clenching, his knuckles turning bluish-white from exertion.
His jawline was taut, lips pressed into a cold, hard line, his eyes frighteningly dark.
"Mom," he said in a hoarse, low voice, tinged with suppressed anger, "stop talking."
"Why shouldn’t I say it?!" May Wright was in the heat of the moment, not noticing the unusual pallor on her son’s face.
"In my opinion, Grace is the best! She’s understanding, considerate, and knows how to care for people! Look at how she’s been taking care of you while you were hospitalized, all reliable and attentive! Unlike that vain Stella Sterling, who only knows how to coax men into spending money on her, what else can she do?!"
"She’s not like that!"
Jasper suddenly roared, a dull pain seizing his chest with agitation, causing him to frown deeply, his face turning paler.
Of all the people in this world, everyone could potentially be vain, but not Stella Sterling!
She carefully treasured even the movie ticket stub he casually gave her...
Even if they were just worthless things...
Thinking of this, a mix of sour and bitter warmth surged up his nose and eyes, making his vision blur.
He bit his teeth fiercely, barely holding back a rush of tears, but his eyes reddened despite his efforts.
May Wright was startled by his appearance, stunned for a moment, then furrowed her brows, "Jasper! Why are you being so stubborn?! She’s about to get engaged to someone else..."
"So what about engagement?!"
Jasper, like an enraged beast, sprang up from the sofa, the movement straining his chest wound, causing intense pain, and he let out a muffled groan, his body swaying, cold sweat beading on his forehead.
He endured the pain, stood straight, and spoke word by word as if grinding them out, "Even marriage can end!"
With that, he no longer looked at May Wright’s suddenly shocked and pale face, turned abruptly, and strode towards the doorway outside the hospital room.
...
Meanwhile, at Serene Law Firm.
Stella Sterling was dressed in a sleek white skirt suit today, making her skin appear fair and her waist slender, her legs long.
"Good morning, boss!" The receptionist greeted her with a bright smile, her eyes like radars, scanning Stella Sterling’s slender fingers accurately.
Empty.
Finn Lockwood happened to rise with a stack of documents from his desk, joining in with exaggerated expression, his tone bursting with gossip, "Boss, good morning! We saw the news yesterday!"
The receptionist nodded intensely, "President Donovan is just too romantic! Sotheby’s Auction House! Eight hundred million pink diamond! Oh my God!"
She clasped her hands to her heart, looking as if she might faint, "Eight hundred million! How many zeros is that?! We mere mortals can hardly imagine! The news said the pink diamond is as large as a pigeon egg, and it’s top-graded in purity. Is it true?"
Finn Lockwood excitedly chimed in, rubbing his hands with a fawning look, "Exactly, exactly! Boss, please do us the favor, let us see it?"
Stella Sterling’s expression was peculiar—eight hundred million...
Just hearing those three words now made her legs weak and her waist sore.
Along with certain indescribable scenes from last night uncontrollably surfacing in her mind.
"Stop that nonsense!" Stella Sterling feigned calmness, her face stern, "There’s no such thing as an eight-hundred-million-dollar ring! The news is just sensationalist, written offhandedly! Get back to work!"
Saying that, she turned around, trying to escape into her office.
However, just as she turned, the law firm’s glass door was pushed open from outside, the wind chime on the door emitting a crisp collision sound.
A tall but slightly thin figure stood in the doorway, silhouetted against the light.
The relaxed and teasing atmosphere inside instantly froze.
Finn Lockwood’s smile stiffened, unconsciously restraining his expression.
Stella Sterling’s footsteps halted, staring at the unexpected visitor at the door, her brows furrowing slightly.
It was Jasper Hawthorne.
