Chapter 22 - 22: Damn!

He cracked his neck left and right and rolled his shoulders, walking up positively while spinning the basketball in his hands as if it were second nature.

He dribbled quickly, the ball bouncing low and controlled. With a swift crossover, he stepped into his shot from the free-throw line...

Swish. Clean. No rim, no backboard. Just net.

The players on the sideline nodded in approval. Aaron grinned and said, "Easy."

For his second shot, he took a step back, moving beyond the three-point line. Someone whispered, "No way he's shooting from that far..."

Aaron smirked and replied, "Watch this."

He launched the ball deep, his form perfectly balanced despite the distance. The hall held its breath as the ball soared through the air...

Swish. Again.

A few players whistled. "Damn. That was a nice shot," one remarked as the crowd clapped in admiration, and he returned to the crowd and hugged his friend, Liam.

Then, Jason announced the final contestant, Nate. Jason called his name, and he stepped forward like a pro, gripping the ball. Before taking his shot, his eyes glanced at Aaron, and a sparkle of challenge and tension passed between them.

Nate's gaze went back to the net and aimed carefully. With a smooth motion, he threw the ball, it straightly hit the rim and bounced right in. Nate didn't celebrate; he simply grabbed his second ball, without stepping back for a long three-pointer like Aaron, and he took two steps to the corner, he squared up, took a breath, and released.

The ball spun through the air like cotton, hitting nothing but the net.

Swish.

The hall fell silent for a moment after Nate's corner shot. Glancing at each other, "That was too perfect," someone muttered, the words hanging in the air.

Aaron rolled his eyes, a gleam of irritation crossing his features as if he did not want to see him anymore. He went to grab his bag for water.

Jason clapped his hands and said, "Impressive." Nate stepped back into the crowd. Jason turned to the crowd. "Alright, everyone. Finally, the selection process has been completed. We'll reach out as soon as possible with the final list. Stay ready!" he announced, the sound echoing through the silent stadium.

After some students headed for the bathroom, some students dispersed from the stadium, but the unspoken rivalry between Aaron and Nate had only just begun.

Later, Nate and Kim stood under the freezing shower, water flowing over them. Nate's hand ran through his slick, dark hair. "What's your plan?" he asked Kim casually.

Kim stepped out of the shower and grabbed a towel, wrapping it around his fit body. "Nothing much. Maybe just catching up on sleep."

Nate chuckled, tossing a wet towel over his head. He walked towards his locker. He rubbed his wet hair to dry and reached for his body wash—only to turn and find a massive figure standing right in front of him.

"Shit! You scared me," Nate spilled, stepping back, a beam of surprise in his eyes.

Aaron stood watching Nate without taking his eyes off him. his gaze was cold as ice, both are equally same tall as twin buildings, his voice sharp and deep as a knife. "Stay away from her."

Nate frowned, tilting his head. "Who? Me? Are you talking to me? Do we even know each other? acting as if he was seeing Aaron for the first time.

A smirk appeared on serious Aaron's face, leaning in close as no gap between them, his breath ghosting over Nate's ear. "Don't play dumb," he murmured.

Nate let out a short laugh, a smirk appeared on his face. "Is that thread?"

"Nope, just warning," Aaron said, without any expression

"Ugh! What if I don't?" Nate said in a slay tone, looking away.

"It seems you didn't get my point."

Nate moved closer, "Don't tell me what I have to do."

"You're playing a dangerous game, Nate," Aaron said, his voice dropping to a near whisper. " This cost could be unimaginable." Before returning and grabbing his bag near the table, and walked towards the exit.

"I want to play that dangerous one," he shouted, his voice sharp and challenging.

Aaron paused mid-step but didn't turn around, his jaw clenched in anger. A tense silence hung in the air before he finally walked away, his anger palpable as he left the room.

"Is that everything okay? " Kim asked, grabbing both bags in his hands, watching the entrance of the bathroom.

Nate nodded his head and said, "Yeah," and both left to go to their lecture hall.

When they entered the Business lecture hall, Nate's eyes searched for Evangeline, but she was not there, so he landed on Zoey and Luna. He approached them, his actions were smooth and purposeful. "Luna, right?" he said, his voice cutting through their conversation

"Yep," she said, while drinking the cool drinks.

"I want Evangeline's phone number."

Luna and her friends exchanged surprised glances. "For what?" Luna asked

"Just for project purposes."

"OH! Okay, 43I9-399-555," Luna told casually, watching her phone.

He dialed that number, the ring sound was audible, the Luna phone rang, she answered and said, "Hello". Her friends were start to laugh.

"I asked for Evangeline's number," he questioned.

"Just note my number. I'll pass it along," Luna replied.

I thought Evangeline is weirdo but her whole group in another level of weirdness, he thought in mind but his smile never faded, "Okay...."he said, left the place.

Again, they continue to gossip about their friends. Zoey silently watched him without saying anything. She mused, what happened weekend night? Probably something happened.

Kim and Nate walk towards his car. Kim gets into the driver seat and Nate in the passenger seat. "I am heading to Evangeline's house," Nate said without any expression on his face.

Kim looked Nate with confusion, "Why? but you didn't inform her?" he said, keeping eyes on road.

Nate's phone buzzed with a message sound. He opened his phone, watching his phone, his eyes glistening in shock and something unreadable, flashing across his face. "Luna sent her number," he said.

"Wow, it's great," he said, a small smirk appearing on his lips.

Nate made a cough signal again.

"I mean, Evangeline has some good friends. It's good for her, right?" he murmured.

"Yeah... yeah..." he nodded. The car stopped. "See you later," Nate said, stepped out from the car, and shifted to nearby standing Rolls-Toyce car. The outside color was dark red, and inside seat and everything was clean and neat. "Go on, Zade," he instructed his driver.

Nate stopped the car few meters before Evangeline house, he kept calling her phone, but she didn't pick up his call. after few seconds of waiting, he came out from car and " You may go, Zade" he ordered, his serious face change to normal.

He walked towards her house, his gaze sweeping over the elegant, simple architecture. The gate swung open.

He watched Evangeline, who was taking beautiful pictures of garden butterflies and flowers in that glowing sunset under the tree. As she changed her camera angle to gate, she caught sight of Nate through the lens, she accidentally clicked the button.

Her eyes are wide and watching him straightly in shock. "What the fuck, he is doing here?" she murmured, her heart pounding against her ribs.
