Chapter 43: You Underestimate Me, Young Lady
A frown appeared on Sawyer’s forehead as he heard that.
"That bastard... I mean, that man could actually do that?" Sawyer asked, trying to contain his anger towards her ex.
"Hmm, his reputation in construction has skyrocketed recently. His company has become a dark horse in the industry. While he may not be compared to the ten big companies, he still holds enough influence to block me from working at another firm."
Abigail smiled, imagining her future plan. She was waiting for Urbangrid Innovation’s eventual downfall. She was confident that they would go bankrupt once they failed to secure and deliver any significant projects in the future.
When that happened, she could return to the industry without any worries, establish her own company, and recruit all the good people in Urbangrid to join her newly built company.
"I see..." Sawyer placed his cutlery on the empty plate, his gaze fixed on the gloomy Abigail. A familiar feeling of unease crept into his heart whenever he heard about her misery.
’Should I do something?’ Sawyer wondered as his Good Samaritan-for-Abigail kicked in.
Noticing Sawyer in a trance, Abigail felt terrible, realizing she had talked so much about Ryland for too long. freewёbn૦νeɭ.com
Trying to break the awkward silence, Abigail asked, "How about you, Sawyer? You mentioned you have business in Orange Town. May I know what kind of industry you’re in?"
Abigail knew very little about him; she only knew his full name and business in Orange Town. Whenever she asked him for details, he avoided the topic or gave her vague answers.
Sawyer leaned back in his chair, smiling at her. However, his smile gradually faded as his gaze fixed on her inviting cherry lips.
’Damn! What the hell am I thinking?’ he scolded himself for his imagination, which was running wild in his mind. He turned his eyes away from her alluring trap.
Glancing at his empty glass, he tried to calm his thoughts before responding, "I don’t do business. I’m just helping people to grow their business."
"So, you’re a consultant?" Abigail asked. Doubt could be heard in her voice. But when she saw Sawyer slightly nod, she was stunned.
’Seriously? I guessed it, right?’ A light smile spread across Abigail’s face.
"Well, you can assume that," Sawyer replied calmly, though he felt terrible for lying to her.
However, it wasn’t entirely a lie. He was more of a lazy investor, placing his money here and there without having to work. In other words, he didn’t work for money; his money worked for him while he enjoyed traveling.
"What business? I mean, which industry?" Abigail’s curiosity persists as she feels the need to learn more about him.
"Almost all fields. I don’t have any particular interest or limit myself to certain industries; I could help anyone who needs me," he said sincerely. He was open to investing in any sector as long as the company offered a return on investment and showed potential for sustainable growth.
"Wow! I’m impressed, Sawyer. You must be a genius!" Abigail praised him genuinely. This was the first time she had met someone with such a wide range of abilities. "So, you could also help in the construction industry?"
Sawyer paused for a moment, trying to remember if he had a construction company in his investment portfolio.
After a few seconds, he couldn’t recall. He invested in many companies, all handled by Peters and Ethan. But for now, he nodded in confirmation. He could always ask them to acquire one if he had none.
"Yes. Do you want me to help you with your career, or are you looking for a company that will value your abilities?" Sawyer offered.
Abigail’s eyes lit up at his suggestion. She was unsure whether his offer was serious or just a joke.
"Seriously, can you help me?" she asked.
"Yes, I’m serious. If you need my help, I will definitely assist you," Sawyer replied.
Talking to her like now, Sawyer found it hard to process his thoughts; all he wanted was to ensure she was happy and no longer had to work hard at the café or have difficulty.
Sawyer saw her blink several times while staring at him. His heart raced.
Suddenly, he felt the room’s cooler not functioning as his body heat rose; he felt hot.
Frustrated with himself, Sawyer abruptly stood up, surprising her.
"Abby, I think I should go home now. It’s almost eleven. It’s inappropriate for me to stay in a girl’s house for too long..."
He knew he needed to leave this room, or he might do something he would regret later.
Abigail glanced at her watch and was stunned to realize how late it had gotten.
She also stood up, wanting to walk him to the door. But to her shock, Sawyer began collecting all the plates and cutlery from the table and brought them to the sink.
"Sawyer? What are you doing?" Abigail ran after him to the kitchen sink. "There’s no need to do that. I can take care of it later."
How could she let him wash dishes for her?
Sawyer turned to Abigail, who was trying to stop him.
"It’s fine, Abby. You already cooked for us. Let me help with the dishes."
Abigail still felt that allowing a guest to wash dishes for her was wrong, but seeing how determined he was, she decided to let him continue.
"Have you ever washed a dish before?" Abigail asked. She doubted Sawyer would ever enter the kitchen in his lifetime. He likely lived in a house with many maids to care for his needs.
Sawyer turned back to wash the dish skillfully.
A soft chuckle escaped his lips as he replied, "You underestimate me, young lady. If you allow me, I would like you to join me for a sleepover at my cabin in the woods. And there I will show you my cooking skills..."
She helped him take the clean dish and dry it.
However, she felt a little strange watching what they were doing. They looked like a married couple, washing dishes together.
"Cabin in the woods? So, you’re the kind of guy who likes to stay in solitaire and explore nature?" she asked.
