Chapter 178: Last warning (4)

Vivienne shook her head, making up her mind to be alone tonight. She was foolish to come to Darius to put forth better efforts to try for a son. Had she stayed away, Vivienne might have been fortunate to enjoy Darius losing his eye.

Instead, Vivienne ended up arguing with Darius again.

Why was it so wrong she was still infatuated with Xavier when Darius was the same way for Selene?

Vivienne walked by the guards who were puzzled. "The king doesn’t need your help. It was only having a little disagreement with a friend. Go back to your places," she ordered the guards.

Vivienne headed for her wing of the palace where she would be far away from Darius. Her night was spoiled thanks to his ungratefulness and it was about to be even more spoiled now that she spotted her father.

"Vivienne, what are you doing?" Victor asked, searching for any sign of the king. "You are meant to be with your husband. You cannot have that woman be the only one to share a bed with him today."

"I am tired therefore I want to retire to bed-"

Victor grabbed Vivienne’s hand. He was tired of her slowing down his plans, taking this as if it were a game.

Vivienne wasn’t in the mood to hear her father speak of an heir. It was all he ever spoke of which led her to believe he cared about a grandson more than his daughter.

Why didn’t he listen to what she had to endure as the queen?

Seeing him be this way, Vivienne continued to hate her father for being the reason she was stuck in the palace. He pushed her right into Darius’s arms. "The king isn’t in any position to try for a child tonight. He got into a fight with Xavier and to no surprise, he lost. Now would be a good time to take him under your wing and train him."

"That isn’t needed," Victor replied.

Victor didn’t want to make Darius harder to kill.

"Then leave me alone. Nothing will happen between me and Darius tonight. I’ve already done as you suggested to push another woman into his arms. I am going to bed alone instead of trying to seduce a man who is now officially at war with Xavier," said Vivienne.

Her father had bigger things to worry about than an heir.

Victor held onto Vivienne’s arm. "If he has started a war with Xavier then now is the time for you to act fast. Become pregnant before we lose the king. I have received word that those challenging him for the throne will start to arrive from tomorrow."

"Xavier doesn’t care about the throne so the others will join him to get rid of your husband and to remove you. I can still put up a fight if you give birth to a prince. You should have had one by now so he would be of a good age but you gave us a princess,’ said Victor.

Victor loved his granddaughter but she wasn’t of any use to him now.

Vivienne removed her father’s hand on her arm and stepped away from him. "You’re joining Darius in sounding like a human. For our kind, a prince or princess shouldn’t matter. Our power determines where we stand. I could sit on the throne as long as I show my power."

Victor didn’t have any interest in that. It was too late for Vivienne to show she was useful. "Vivienne-"

"No," Vivienne stopped her father. "There are great women in all our families who rule lands. I can rule the palace as well. Why must I torture myself to lay with him and get a prince? You underestimate me just like Darius does. That is why he never saw me as his equal though I come from an important family."

"Use me, father. Should I ever be so fortunate to lose Darius, use me instead," Vivienne suggested.

"No. I want you to go back to the king and have him take you to bed. After all this time you have only given us a princess. If it were your sister, I wouldn’t need to be concerned. I am doing this for us," Victor said, trying to calm Vivienne.

He couldn’t have Vivienne thinking he was against her.

"A boy will help us carry on the family name. You said you wanted to be free of the palace so I am giving you that chance. You must trust me," said Victor.

Only he knew what was best for the family.

Vivienne didn’t want to follow her father’s plans anymore. She didn’t have the strength to lay night after night with Darius. Her daughter was enough. "I am going to be with my daughter now. You can join me and go elsewhere. It is up to you."

Vivienne walked off, leaving her father behind to make up his mind.

Victor stayed back, knowing that Vivienne would come to her senses soon. He didn’t believe Vivienne all of a sudden cared for the daughter she ignored. Getting her back to trying for a son was easy but for now, he needed to have a word with Darius to prevent him from fighting Xavier.

Later in the night, Xavier returned to the estate. The scratches Darius made to his body had healed so all he needed to do was get out of his bloody clothes.

Xavier kept his promise to Selene by returning to their room instead of hiding his appearance by going to another room.

When he returned, Xavier found Selene sitting on the bed most likely waiting for him.

Selene didn’t appear surprised by his appearance. She only asked, "Whose blood is it?"

"The king."

"You didn’t kill him, did you?" Selene asked, worried they might wake to the king’s army at their gates.

"I wanted to but I did not. I ruined his eye," Xavier replied.

"Good," Selene answered, standing up from the bed. "You need to get out of that shirt and burn it immediately."

"You are not upset?" Xavier questioned, a tad bit surprised by her calmness.

Selene smiled. Rather than be upset, she wished she could have joined to give Darius a beating. "A man I don’t know well is quite obsessed with me because of my husband and now he has turned to having me followed. I would like to give the king a good beating."

Selene continued to say, "I am glad you did not kill him. That would be far messier for us than all the others. I do not have time to deal with the guards coming around about the king. I would hope after what you did to him the king would leave us alone but judging from your expression, that won’t be the case."

Selene now understood that they wouldn’t get the king off their back unless he was dead.

Selene helped Xavier to take the shirt off and then walked to the fireplace to throw the shirt inside.

"We both had a long day. No, we’ve had an eventful couple of days thinking about others. So, would you join me tomorrow for a day of just us? We were just getting much closer to each other and I want that to continue," Selene said, turning the focus back on their marriage. "Well, the first part would be us alone and then go to Francesca’s home for dinner."

The invitation finally came to have dinner with Francesca and Selene couldn’t be more grateful for it.

"I am all yours tomorrow," Xavier replied.

"Wonderful. I will find you some blood and inform Harold to have the carriage ready for us early in the morning. Wait for me before you go back to bed," Selene said, heading toward the door. "I won’t be long."
