Chapter 190: Working together (2)

"So," Isaac closed the door behind him. "What is it that you found which might convince me to work for you?"

"Have there been any cases of vampires attacking humans and then having to be confined to their homes? Not fools attacking humans because their king speaks of it but it appears as though they lost control of their minds. Cases the court wants to keep quiet," said Xavier.

"I have heard something about it but it has been written off as vampires having their fun. According to the king, there isn’t any harm in it so these people are confined to their homes and then freed once they calm down. Who do you know was confined?" Isaac wondered since it was a secret matter.

"One of Selene’s friends spoke of someone they know attacking humans. She said it wasn’t like her friend. It is mostly those close to the king who enjoy the idea of attacking humans and killing them after drinking their blood. Do you remember what happened to my aunt?" Xavier asked, his mind going over her unfortunate time.

"I do,’ Isaac nodded his head. "She got her fangs broken for it. The way she acted caused her great shame. I still think her punishment was too cruel. Why did your grandfather ever go so far with her punishment?"

"My father got in his ear and it worked. It is why my aunt hates my father but she’ll come around to do as he asks while waiting to get her revenge. It wasn’t a good idea for him to call my aunt to town but he’s so focused on my marriage that he misses her holding a dagger behind her back," Xavier replied.

"It is times like this when I am very glad I am not part of your family. It’s going to be a big problem if she tries to kill your father. The only way she could do it would be if she gets her hands on a holy weapon and if she goes to kill him, your grandfather will wake," Isaac said, worried about the aftermath.

Isaac would be a lot less concerned about Camilla killing Nathaniel if Xavier didn’t have a holy weapon he could pass off to her. "You wouldn’t help your aunt kill your father, right? You hate him but you wouldn’t stir up that trouble."

"I wouldn’t," Xavier replied honestly.

"Good," Isaac sighed in relief. That was one last issue he had to keep watch of.

"I’m going to kill him myself. Why should I let her have all the fun because he got her fangs broken? He’s been gathering the family to speak about my wife. Isn’t it fair that I kill him?" Xavier asked, seeking a genuine answer. freēwēbηovel.c૦m

"She can’t drink blood from a human if she desperately needs to. Her fangs are gone which is a great shame for any vampire. It rips a big part of us," Isaac tried to explain but he knew it was falling on deaf ears.

"She can still live for a long time and she possesses talents unlike any other. I’m sure in the future there will be fake fangs for her to use. My aunt will be fine without fangs but my wife will not be well if my family continues to show interest in her. You should be rooting for me to kill him. Are you hoping she beats me to it?" Xavier asked, going for the rope to put it away.

"Why does it feel like if I don’t answer to your liking you might kill me? I don’t want to see anyone kill a Blackthorn. That’s going to create a lot of problems for the palace to fix. Whenever one of you gets hurt, everyone is on edge. Why don’t we focus on the attacks?" Isaac asked, seeing that as more important.

"You’re a terrible friend-"

"Because I don’t want you to kill your father? Who in their right mind would cheer you on to do that? I don’t want any part in it and we are not friends. You!" Isaac pointed his finger at Xavier. "Forced your way into my life."

"You’re starting to annoy me by denying it. I want you to look into what is truly happening to these vampires. It might be tied to the attacks around the town. I have started to look into the church since it is common sense priests would have something to do with holy weapons. They were the ones who blessed them in the past," Xavier shared his plans.

"We’ve already taken a look at churches. Since the war, we’ve uncovered all their hiding places, killed or imprisoned anyone we found with those weapons and taken the weapons to the palace to be destroyed," Isaac replied.

"Well, seeing that I was able to get my hands on one of those weapons then they have other hiding places. You are proving not to be too smart," Xavier said, once again reconsidering if it was worth employing Isaac.

Isaac was close to leaving. "I was only telling you what the court found. It might be a waste of our time checking the churches again. The churches are too obvious of a place to hide their weapons."

"That might be true but it is also the perfect place for their followers to gather. Some of us cannot enter churches and at times, it is hard to hear what is said inside. It is the perfect place for them to gather, is it not?" Xavier asked.

Nothing should be overlooked.

"Some of us?" Isaac focused on these three words. As far as Isaac was concerned, no vampires could enter churches without feeling pain. "What are you, you bastard?"

"A vampire," Xavier answered calmly. "A pureblood to be exact. Did I let a shapeshifter into my home? Normally, you are smarter than this."

"Are you secretly an elder? Or, is it that Xavier Blackthorn doesn’t exist and you are the sleeping elder-"

Isaac ducked when Xavier threw the dagger in his direction. "Be careful with that! I am asking since no vampire can enter a church."

"We can enter churches but it does sting. It is up to you to decide how much pain you can take. Yesterday, my guard caught a priest watching us. It is worth looking into those churches again even if we do not find the weapons. We need any clue we can get. Do you still have those humans who work for you?" Xavier asked.

"How do you- Never mind," Isaac changed his mind. "I do. As long as I guarantee their safety, they will work for me. I will send for them to enter the church and inform me about anything suspicious. I will provide you with a record of who the priests meet with."

Isaac continued, "I will need the name of this friend who is confined. I must know who they met before they attacked humans. There is much to deal with and the king is worried about taking women to the palace. Why don’t you kill him instead of your father? You should take the throne."

"I don’t have any interest in it. If we are done here, I must be off to see my aunt. She might have some clues about what happened to her long ago," Xavier said as he walked to the door.

"We are done. Since this will be more successful, I will leave the court today. There are a few things I must grab-"

"A few things you must steal," Xavier corrected Isaac.

"I am not stealing. I am borrowing them," Isaac clarified.
