Chapter 196: Stranger in my bed (4)

Xavier returned to the estate and immediately knew something was off. The scent of blood lingered in the air. The blood belonged to vampires because of the distinct smell.

The guards being in place let him know that the threat was gone but he was still worried about Selene. He took his eyes off Selene for a few hours and then this happened.

Xavier exited the carriage before it came to a stop by the steps. He needed to see that Selene was well before he found out about what happened.

Harold waited by the door to greet Xavier. "Lord Blackthorn-"

"Where is my wife?" Xavier inquired, walking by Harold.

"The lady is inside the kitchen baking," Harold shared.

Xavier stopped walking. Since when did Selene bake? He turned around to ask, "Baking?"

"Yes. She was baking earlier today and after the princess visited with guards, the lady turned to baking again. We have all been waiting on the sidelines for her to stop. Even her maid has failed to get her out of the kitchen," said Harold.

"The princess? Tell me those two did not speak," Xavier said in a low tone.

"The princess managed to get inside of your room and the lady was the one to find her. In defence of the guards, there were many palace guards to protect the estate from the princess," Harold stopped when Xavier started to walk away.

Xavier headed straight for the kitchen and just as Harold said, he found servants standing on the sidelines while Selene had some kind of pie before her.

Xavier silently sent away the servants so he would be left alone with Selene.

"Did your talk with your aunt go well?" Selene asked, knowing Xavier was here without needing to look to see who had come.

"It did. She tried her best to remember who she had spoken to or what she consumed but it was a long time ago. I cannot fault her for forgetting that time. I will need to see Francesca’s friend for new clues. Since when do you bake?" Xavier asked, going to stand beside Selene.

"I’ve tried it before and with all the fruits, I thought I would do it again. I’ve had a hobby all along. I like it," Selene said, focused on her work.

Xavier looked around the room at the many pies. "You’ve made enough that we can sell them."

Selene laughed. "Sell them to who? Humans will be too afraid to eat what was made by a vampire and vampires will think I am trying to kill them. I have made them to be eaten by us and to be shared with the servants."

Xavier touched Selene’s hand to make her stop. "How long have you been in here?"

"I don’t know. I lost track of time after I came back. I’ve made enough that the guards can have some. It doesn’t have any blood in it but I think they will still enjoy it," said Selene.

"Selene, look at me," Xavier said, touching her face to have her look at him. "I heard the princess was here. I know how Morgana can be so please, tell me what she did to bother you."

"I am no longer upset by the princess. I only wanted to bake. It helped to calm me," Selene replied.

"You’ve baked enough for us to sell in the market. Something about her visit is troubling you and I will not let you go until you have told me," Xavier said, caging Selene between his arms.

There wasn’t anywhere for her to go when he had one arm on both sides of her and there was a counter behind Selene.

"I am being honest that baking helped to calm my mind. I was upset," Selene admitted. "I found her being so comfortable on our bed and I did not like it. It is the one place I can count on to feel safe but now I think of her presence there."

"I will not get upset since I don’t have any right to but you were with the princess as well. I can take it," Selene said but a tiny part of her didn’t believe it.

"No, I have not. The only person I have ever been with from the palace was Vivienne and that was before she became queen as you know. The princess has always been infatuated with me and promises we would get married made it worse. There was nothing between us," Xavier promised.

"Good. I understand Vivienne but if you were so crazy to be involved with a relative of the king then I might have run out of here," Selene joked, feeling better now she had her answer. "How was she able to get by the guards? No one else has."

"Morgana is a shifter. She’s a talented one from what I have heard. It might not only be bats she can shift into. It is the first time she has ever gotten on the estate and I am not fond of her timing. It won’t happen again," Xavier promised.

Xavier noted in his head to gather the guards to have them keep an eye on the sky. Something like this would not happen again.

"I do not like that she was on our bed," Selene said.

"Do you wish for everything on the bed to be changed or should I have Harold toss out the bed as well? Or, were you thinking of using another room?"

"No, that would be too dramatic. The bed needs to be dressed in fresh blankets. I know it is silly-"

"It isn’t. I wouldn’t be pleased if someone who admired you was on our bed. They would be on fire right now along with the bed. I will have Harold tidy the room and in the meantime, just for tonight, we can lay somewhere else," Xavier suggested.

"Thank you. I might have overdone it with the pies," Selene said, now realising how many she had done. "Maybe it isn’t a good hobby for me. Everyone might start to be haunted by pies."

"You do know there are other things you can bake like a cake, right? I will get whatever you need for it," Xavier offered. "And again, I must make the offer that I can be quite distracting."

"You can be," Selene slowly nodded her head, agreeing with Xavier. Francesca’s advice seemed like something she should take now. "That reminds me that I had dinner planned for us to be outside. For us to be alone. Will you join me or is it too soon to be outside after our last visitors?"

"No, it isn’t. The guards will take care of anyone trying to linger around the estate. You and I have somewhere to be. Where is the dinner you want to take?" Xavier asked, looking around for what he needed to carry.

Selene couldn’t help laughing at how much of a rush Xavier was in. "Harold was taking care of it so I must find him or Gertrude. You don’t need to rush, Xavier. I am not going to change my mind. I was the one who planned for our dinner to be outside."

Selene knew Agnes was also concerned about her changing her plans but Selene never thought of letting the princess’s visit ruin her night. No matter what, Selene was going to enjoy her night with Xavier and test out what Francesca spoke of.
