Chapter 209: Coming to his senses (1)

’Why isn’t he dead yet?’ Cassandra wondered, trying to make sense of how Gabriel was walking around perfectly fine.

She was down to the last drop of the holy water she had been slipping inside his blood yet she wasn’t fortunate to celebrate Gabriel falling sick.

From what she had heard from the priests, Gabriel should have felt the effects from the first few drops. He should be weak by now or even dead since he was a mixed-blood. They were always the easiest to kill.

Cassandra stared at the small bottle which would be gone by the end of today. She wouldn’t be able to get any more unless she went to see Bryce but he was always stingy with the amount he had.

Since Gabriel was still able to go about his day and train outside, Cassandra now questioned if the church had given her holy water. It was the only explanation as to why Gabriel wasn’t dead yet.

’They lied to me,’ Cassandra thought.

It was becoming clearer day by day that the church did not care for her. First, their plans were taking too long so she ended up having to sleep with Gabriel who wanted to put a vampire inside of her. They were slow to attack the palace or the purebloods around the town and now, they had lied to her about the one thing she could count on to save her life.

Cassandra started to see the church in a different light.

Were they moving slowly since it was her body which had to feel Gabriel’s touch every night? Because it was she who would have to carry a child to later get rid of?

They made her sound so important and promised to protect her only to lie and leave her out for dead.

Cassandra raised her hand, wanting to throw the useless bottle but she stopped just before it could slip her hands. She shouldn’t be so quick to think poorly of the church. After all, they were the ones who took her in after she lost her family.

Cassandra decided to test if she was right. She opened the bottle and wet her hands with the last of the holy water. It should burn Gabriel when she touched him and if it didn’t, Cassandra would no longer trust the court.

She walked outside to speak with Gabriel.

Gabriel wouldn’t look her in the eye anymore and it felt like he was pushing himself to sleep with her. Cassandra wouldn’t mind it if not for the fact that she overheard him asking about Selene.

She refused to witness Gabriel shaming her by going back to Selene.

"Gabriel!" Cassandra called out to him, waving her hand. "Aren’t you in need of a break? You’ve been training since you came home. You must come inside and rest."

"I am heading out when I am done here," Gabriel replied.

"Oh, where are you going?" Cassandra asked.

"Out," Gabriel gave a simple answer.

Cassandra wished she could throw the bottle at his head. "Is it somewhere dangerous that you cannot tell me? I don’t want to wake in later tonight and hear that you were injured. If it is to the palace that you must go then you can say that. I won’t ask any further."

"I am going out!" Gabriel snapped. Why did she need to hear more? "Can’t I have some secrets to myself as well? Or, should I twist what I am going to do tonight and let you hear about it from someone else?"

"This again. I told you that I did not lie. Everything happened so fast and when Selene was gone, I was still in shock to speak of what else her maid did to me. I was afraid of mentioning more about Selene around you so I moved on. Why can’t you trust me?" Cassandra argued.

"You are the one making it impossible for me to trust you. You could have told me more about it when I comforted you. I was at your side all night long. Had you told me what else happened before the guard came, I wouldn’t be angry with you. I cannot help feeling like you planned what happened that night," said Gabriel.

He didn’t want to believe it at first but the more time he went over that night, the more it didn’t make sense.

Gabriel had to realise he was so angry with Selene that he didn’t want to hear anything she had to say to defend herself or her maid’s actions. He set out to hurt Selene and the best way to do it then was using her maid.

Cassandra approached Gabriel to touch his hand. There wasn’t any kind of reaction from him so it was in fact normal water.

"I did not lie but if there was a chance I did, why does it matter? You wanted to hurt her and you did just that when you killed Elsie. You got what you wanted. Or is it because you didn’t expect she would leave that you regret it? You were using me to hurt her and then you would go back to her, right?" Cassandra realised his plans.

"Don’t be absurd," Gabriel said as he walked by Cassandra to go inside. He needed to go to the palace now to speak with Darius.

"Everyone can see it. You were enjoying it when you thought she didn’t have anywhere to go but then you were upset when you found out she was with Lord Blackthorn. You should be angry she killed your mother or is it because those useless guards didn’t find proof, you think she is innocent?" Cassandra asked.

Cassandra couldn’t believe this. Everything was set up so perfectly yet Gabrile went back to thinking about Selene. It was believed she killed his mother so why was she on his mind?

Cassandra laughed, finding everything she learned today to be funny. No one cared for her.

Gabriel she expected but not the church.

They were all using her and when they were ready, they would toss her to the side without caring what would become of her.

"Were you ever going to make me your second wife if Selene had stayed? If she gave in and confessed she loved you or acted how you wanted her to, would you have kept me at your side? You’re a liar too, Gabriel. Only, you’re worse than what you are trying to paint me to be," Cassandra said, refusing to be the only one taking the role of the bad guy here.

Gabriel stopped to listen to what nonsense Cassandra had come up with. "You better be drunk. That’s the only way I would excuse this behaviour. I suggest you stop talking before you find yourself with nowhere to go. I love you but I do not enjoy being lied to."

"When is your family coming? The man that I met. He missed our wedding and is now taking his sweet time to get here. I want him here before five days are up or I will send you back to find him. Do speak about Selene to me and I suggest you do not wait for me to return," Gabriel said, continuing on his way to leave home.

Cassandra couldn’t take much more of this. She couldn’t depend on holy water to kill him when she knew where to find a holy weapon.
