Chapter 98: You Love Me?

And to help herself, she threw Valerio’s image out of her head, and instead, began seeing Zayne. There was no one else on this floor with her, except Zayne. He was the one holding her, it was his touch she was feeling, and those pairs of eyes on her were his.

He was smiling down at her like he always did. Staring at her yet again as if she were the only thing he could see. As if he’d never look at another woman.

"I love you," she sighed out. "I love you. And I don’t understand why I never told you. I love you a lot and I’ll...I’m going to say it until you understand—"

"You love me?"

The voice that sounded nothing like Zayne broke her out of her spiraling thoughts and hallucinations. Valerio’s face came into her vision and she quickly jolted out of his grip, staggering back and stumbling over her own foot to fall to the ground.

Her lashes flickered rapidly.

"I-it’s not you. It’s not you." She shook her head. "I was confused. It wasn’t...you I saw."

Rejecting him, he could handle that. But to watch her say she loved him, only for it to turn out she’d meant someone else drove him out of his mind.

He grabbed her bicep and yanked her to her feet. "You will dance with me! Properly! And you will look me in the face! You will have your eyes on me and me only!"

"Let go of me. I don’t want to. I don’t want to do this! Let go!" She fought him off, staggering backward.

Valerio shoved her against the wall, slamming his free hand by the side of her head against the wall.

Her chest rose and fell in heavy shaky breathing as she slowly glanced at his fist.

"Please..." she breathed out. "Please let go of me."

He was fuming, grabbing her jaw to stare into her eyes. "Why? Why can’t you just love me, huh? Why must it be him? You can’t even dance with me without trying to replace my image with his. Do you know how insulting that is?"

The wetness that had built up in her eyes broke and she rapidly flickered her eyes. "I’m not...going anywhere, but stop. Don’t make me do any of this. Just...please leave me alone."

"But why should I?" He asked. "What would be the point of having you here with me if I can’t even hold you? If I can’t even touch you or even..."

She looked away from him before he could kiss her.

"Stop. Valerio, please stop."

He looked at her face which she’d turned away from him, his jaw clenching. "That’s how you want to be? You’re going to keep being this way with me?"

"Fine."

Instead of going on and on, he dragged her out of the room and began down the stairs towards the room he’d kept her in.

"Valerio! What are you doing? What are you trying to—"

He pushed the door open and shoved her inside, hard enough that she fell to the floor.

Evelyn turned her head quickly, rushing to her feet the second she saw him closing the door.

"Wait no!" She moved quickly, grabbing the door, but it was locked, clicking shut. "Valerio! Valerio. Wait, no, you can tie my hands, you can make sure I don’t escape, but please don’t lock me in here!"

She banged as loudly as she could on the door, but he wouldn’t open the door. If anything, his steps began to sound further and further away until she couldn’t hear them anymore.

They pressed her forehead against the door and slowly turned to have her back against it. She slid to the floor on her bottom and pulled her legs to her chest.

Evelyn wrapped her arms around her knees and buried her face in them.

If only she hadn’t gone to meet him. If only she’d just followed her instincts and refused. She wouldn’t be in this situation.

How long was she going to be here? Was she ever going to leave here? Would she be able to escape?

Zayne found her. He could have almost saved her. But...

Evelyn began sobbing hard into her arms, wetting up her chest. Her reality was finally settling in. The problem was that she didn’t even know exactly where she was. So if she does manage to escape, where was she to start heading? Where was she to run to? And who was she to find?

Throwing her head back against the door, she ran her fingers through her hair.

"Please, help me..."

She sobbed to herself.

"Zayne... Dad... Anyone, please help me..."

———

Zayne blinked his eyes open.

He stared at the white ceiling, lifting his hand to rub at his aching chest. He was in pain, as if someone was stabbing into his chest and he wasn’t sure why...

"Evelyn..." he muttered to himself, eyes falling shut for a few moments before he sat up on the bed.

They’d done the blood test and luckily, he’d ended up being a match for Dario. He’d passed out after that, and looking around, he was sure he was in the hospital.

The door of the room suddenly pushed open and none other than Siena walked in.

"You’re awake."

She approached him.

"How is Dario?" Zayne asked.

She smiled at him. "Don’t worry about Dario. He’s fine and out of danger. You saved him and he should wake up in three days at most."

He took a deep breath, exhaling in relief. What would he have done if anything had happened to Dario? How would he ever forgive himself? He might have gotten angry at Alessio when he said it was his fault. But really thinking about it, it was his fault.

If he’d never involved them in the first place, none of this would’ve happened.

"My mother. She doesn’t know about this, right?" he asked.

Siena shook her head. "She doesn’t. And don’t worry. Alessio didn’t say a word to her. Oh, I brought a new pair of shirts and a coat. The one you had on before was torn. It’s cold outside."

’Good." He removed the drip connected to him to settle his feet on the floor.

She frowned at him. "Wait, where are you going?"
