Chapter 89: The Dead Don’t Stay Dead: Maddy and Her Children Confront a Lich! — Part 4.

As he executed the move, Frovian had already prepared another skill.

"Earth Element: Soil Spear!"

He launched a spiraling spear of compressed soil with blinding speed. The Lich spun its spine staff, conjuring a jagged Bone Shield—but the soil spear struck with such force that both spear and shield shattered. The impact forced the Lich’s jaw to drop in surprise, a fleeting expression of vulnerability.

Frovian didn’t pause.

"Advance Fire Element: Flamegust!"

A roaring torrent of flames surged toward the Lich. Bones sizzled and blackened in the heat, eliciting a piercing, unnatural scream.

"Burn and atone for your sins!"

But before the inferno could finish its work, the Lich vanished, burrowing into the shadows and slipping away from Frovian’s relentless assault.

Frovian’s eyes narrowed, his lips curling into a venomous sneer.

"Coward! Hiding behind your shadows like some spineless wretch! You dare vanish when the real battle has begun?!"

He slammed his fists into the ground, sending shards of stone spinning outward. "I don’t care how many tricks you have, Lich! Face me! Show yourself, or you’ll regret ever crossing my family!"

His amphibian skin glimmered with residual heat from his flames, but his voice carried sharp, biting venom—the sting of insult and the promise of retribution all in one.

The final three zombies—a swordsman, a mage, and a marksman—closed in on Maddy, moving with unnerving synchronization. The Zombie Mage summoned a thick, rolling fog, shrouding the area and obscuring her vision, while the Marksman loosed a trio of arrows in a deadly spread.

Maddy’s eyes glowed faintly beneath the veil of the zombie Mage’s fog. She inhaled slowly, letting her Seismic Dominion, Prey Detection and Divine Sight sweep the area. Every footstep, every slight shift in air or mana, registered instantly.

"These zombies... they’re not just mindless puppets. They move as they did in life, coordinated, tactical... The necromancy doesn’t just animate them—it preserves their instincts, their skills... their very lives, twisted into this cursed shell."

She flexed her fingers, letting a faint hum of energy ripple through her body.

"It’s impressive... and terrifying. But impressive does not mean undefeatable. Let’s finish this... quickly, cleanly, and honorably."

She weaved through the incoming arrows with a fluid, almost spectral grace, her body shimmering with the Incorporeal trait she had acquired from the White Spirit. The zombie swordsman lunged, his blade darkly edged and humming with residual mana.

"Absolute Light Manipulation: Divine Armament — Dagger!"

Maddy manifested a dagger, mirroring the one the zombie girl with the locket had once carried. With a flick of her wrist, she parried the swordsman’s strike with precise steel. The force behind it was immense; she could feel the strength and skill of a high-ranking adventurer channeled through this undead shell.

"This one... its stance, the grip... definitely trained, very skilled."

Her feet slid back across the polished, calcified dragon rib.

"I’m sorry."

Using her Serpentine Locomotion, her body twisted and slithered behind the zombie swordsman, and she drove the light dagger straight into its skull. A silent prayer left her lips.

Before she could catch her breath, heat prickled her senses—fireballs streaked toward her, conjured by the mage zombie ahead. Maddy froze for just a fraction of a second, eyes narrowing as she tracked their trajectory with lightning precision. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

"Fireballs... though this one’s just a low-tier version of my Flame Cannonball."

Pairing her dagger with Serpentine Locomotion, Maddy skated across the uneven, rib-strewn floor, weaving flawlessly between the fiery orbs. She moved like a veteran assassin, every step and twist precise, fluid, and deadly. Her pulse quickened as she studied the mage zombie’s stance, noting the arcane rhythm of its casting.

"Even in death, this one remembers the flow of spells... it’s like facing a true sorcerer, not some mindless corpse."

She slithered forward, gliding across the uneven floor until she stood before the Mage. Her dagger flashed, striking precisely through the undead’s forehead. The zombie crumpled instantly, its spell interrupted, leaving only a faint wisp of necrotic mana lingering in the air.

"May your soul rest in peace..."

The archer raised its bow to strike, but Maddy’s dagger flew true, piercing its head before it could release an arrow. She whispered another prayer for its soul.

"Each one... had a life, a skill, a story. And now they return to rest."

She exhaled slowly, the weight of empathy pressing down on her shoulders even as the battlefield fell silent...

But while Maddy and her chimera children were fighting the zombies, the S-rank adventurer party of Erwin had already stepped onto the same floor they now stood upon. The thick, rolling fog conjured by the zombie mage had turned the plaza into a graveyard of white mist and flickering violet flashes.

Ed gripped his magic musket, his knuckles whitening around the handle. Through his goggles, he could make out the silhouette of a woman... Maddy. Moving like a ghost through the fog, a dagger of light dancing in her hand.

"Captain... those adventurers down there... they’re fighting zombies. Should we... help them?"

Erwin stared into the mist, watching the figures move with precise, deadly coordination. A flash of golden light cut through the fog, followed by the unmistakable sound of zombies falling one by one. His pride warred with his pragmatism as he observed.

"No, look at their movements. They’re not struggling. They’re... dismantling them. If we interfere, we’ll just get in their way. And if we stop for every skirmish, we’ll be delaying this mission even further. We’ve already lost enough time to random monsters on the way."

Lita nodded in agreement, adding,

"I agree. Not everyone is worth helping. Those adventurers will probably get angry with us if we step in. They’ll see us as stealing their loot. Better to just leave those greedy ones to their work."

Ed, with his sharp eyes, watched the silhouettes of Maddy’s team moving fluidly in the mist. His gaze lingered on them for a moment before he turned away.

"Right... Sorry for suggesting that."

The five adventurers resumed their walk toward the depths of the cave, their footsteps echoing off the walls. Their decision was made. They would leave Maddy’s family to their own battle in Area 1, and press forward with their mission.
