Chapter 249: Am I being a diva right now?
"What do we think of this kitchen?" Andrew had thought that this was going to be a rather painless ordeal. He’d never been house shopping before, and when he’d been looking for apartments, he hadn’t really been that picky either.
He’d had multiple people who he’d asked to help him find places say that he was pretty easy. His list was easy, manageable, and he was a pleasure to work with.
Andrew felt that they might have been lying to his face because he’d been 6’4.
Andrew let out a sigh, glancing around the kitchen of the fourth place that they had looked at today. This was Thomas’ realtor, and thankfully, the crew was waiting at a nearby coffee shop after Maxwell had snapped at them at the first house.
They were very opinionated, and Kim was outwardly showing that she was biased and wanted them to go with her selection of a realtor. Jenny was more subtle about it, but by the end of the first house, Maxwell had pulled everyone aside and told them, rather calmly, that they needed to wait nearby, or else he wouldn’t speak to them tomorrow and Andrew and Maxwell would disappear somewhere they couldn’t monitor them. Only Michael would know that they were safe.
The threat had worked, Kim and Jenny looked chastised, and so did everyone else. Well, everyone except May and Ford. They were just along for the ride, and said that they would swing by Jordan’s gallery while they had time. It would be the third time that they had been by to support their son-in-law, but it was very much a May and Ford thing to do.
Maxwell told them that they would call them when they had gone through all of the houses the realtor had selected. That also applied to his parents, and Kim and Jenny.
Where was Andrew when Maxwell was ripping a strip off of everyone at the first house? He was talking to the realtor and explaining all the ways he didn’t like the house. The realtor was taking everything into consideration, especially after they realised that Maxwell, the bigger name of their two clients, was deferring to him.
Andrew had a long list of things that he wanted. Only a few were a requirement, but Maxwell had put a little worm into Andrew’s brain. They were both planning to live in this house for a long time. Yes, it was urgent that they moved relatively soon, but at the same time, it was okay to move some of those ’maybes’ into the ’must’ category.
The problem came from the fact that Andrew hadn’t decided on what should move into the must category before they left the house, and he felt like his mood was on a damn slider.
One house had too much mulch in the front yard. He didn’t like the layout of the bedroom. The second storey wasn’t well laid out. Where would Maxwell be able to have his office? He hated the backyard. freeωebnovēl.c૦m
Andrew felt like he was awful to deal with, and Maxwell was keeping his mouth shut. Andrew was a little bit grateful that everyone else had left before or while he was having his first chat with the realtor. Otherwise, he was sure he wouldn’t hear the end of it.
And so, that led back to the question that the realtor was asking. What did Andrew think of the kitchen? This was the biggest task. The biggest hurdle to cross. Andrew, so far, hadn’t liked any of the kitchens.
And the trend was continuing.
Andrew pulled air through his teeth, one hand holding his list, and the other on his waist. Maxwell was roaming the space, while the realtor was in between them, clearly on the verge of their smile snapping off of their face. At some point it had become forced, and Andrew felt terrible for it. He couldn’t stop though.
Maxwell had given him permission to be picky, and so he was going to be picky.
"The colour is...not great. So are the appliances. I really didn’t want gas for the stove, and the counters are...it’s going to cost a fortune to get them changed and raised." Andrew said. "I also don’t like the faucet, there aren’t two ovens, and the fridge isn’t big enough. Does this place even have a pantry?" Andrew winced as the words came out of his mouth, but he didn’t stop himself.
Maxwell had his back to him, so he couldn’t see his expression. Andrew did worry that he was pissed at him, but he worried about the realtor instead. Their face had fallen, and Andrew sighed.
"I like the layout, just not...everything else. The number of bedrooms is what we wanted. The flow between the kitchen and living room is nice, I like how there is already a small space in the basement set up for a gym, but..." Andrew trailed off. He really liked how they had their main bedroom on the bottom floor. He knew that was asking for a lot to get a house similar to what they were living in right now, and that Andrew probably shouldn’t be out looking for houses right now.
He felt terrible, but he still forged ahead.
"I see. Well, I’m glad we found some things that we liked." The fact that they were able to stay upbeat really made Andrew believe that they were a professional. "I have three more set up after this, and then we can take a break, go over what we liked and didn’t like between the places we viewed, and make some decisions from there." Andrew nodded, before he sighed.
"I appreciate you putting up with me." Andrew told them and they laughed. Their smile when they looked at him was softer, more real.
"It’s alright, Dr. Knox. You aren’t yelling, or kicking up a fuss, so your list isn’t that big of an issue. Admittedly, I would have liked to have had it before we started viewing homes, but I am glad you have clear cut ideas of what you like. From my understanding, you want to have to do the least amount of renos upon moving in?" They asked and it was Maxwell who spoke up this time, answering for the both of them.
"At least in the major areas. If we have to live in a different bedroom while our main bedroom is being done, that’s not an issue, but because Andrew uses the kitchen everyday and insists that we can’t eat out for every meal, ideally we’d have the kitchen almost up to everything that he desires." Maxwell’s eyes were smiling as he spoke and Andrew felt his heart jerk. Andrew inhaled and exhaled slowly as his emotions swung towards affection for the man, hard and fast.
It was a good thing that the realtor they were with was a beta. Thomas had made sure that when he spoke to the realtor group that he normally worked with that they sent a competent beta, for their own safety. Andrew wasn’t able to control himself as well as he hoped, and he wanted to impact as few people as possible.
Thankfully, Maxwell was getting used to his pheromones, so he hadn’t had a similar reaction to when Andrew had gotten mad that one time. Andrew also hadn’t gotten that mad yet, even while waiting for his rut to hit him like a freight train. Frustrated, yes, but not angry like he had been when Michael and Maxwell had been needling him last time.
"Ah. That’s quite sweet of you, Mr. Beckett. I’ll make a note of that for the next round of houses that we look at." Maxwell nodded at their words, before he slid his gaze to Andrew.
"Did you want to go look at the master bedroom? See what you like and don’t like again?" Maxwell asked Andrew and Andrew nodded. Maxwell turned back to the realtor. "We’ll be out with you shortly. Just a last minute check." They nodded at Maxwell’s words, pulling out their phone.
"Perfect. I’ll meet you two in the entrance hall then, and I just sent the coordinates to the next house to both of your phones." They smiled before leaving the kitchen and Maxwell approached Andrew. He took his hand that he had against his waist and tugged him towards the stairs. He said nothing as he led him up the stairs and down the hallway at the top of the stairs to the master bedroom. It had a double door entrance, which Andrew didn’t hate, but the bedrooms beside the master were...smaller? It felt like they had put so much focus into this one feature that they didn’t care about the square footage for the rest of the house.
"What do you think about the space?" Maxwell asked, interlocking their fingers as they looked around the empty space. Andrew frowned. Upon entering the space, you were greeted with, presumably, the bed. On either side of the doors that you entered into the room were two doors. The right was the on suite bathroom, and to the left was the walk in closet.
If Andrew was honest with himself, the closet wasn’t big enough for his clothes, let alone Maxwell’s. That was due to the fact that Andrew was so large. His clothes took up a lot of space, and Maxwell was a man who cared about how he looked. He needed more storage space.
The bathroom also wasn’t big enough. The ceilings were high enough for him, but the shower didn’t go all the way up, and the tub was a normal man’s size, not an Andrew size. There were just so many modifications that they were going to have to make.
Andrew sighed heavily and Maxwell’s shoulders began to shake before he started laughing.
"Why are you laughing?" Andrew asked and Maxwell’s tinkling laughter soothed some of the disappointment that was brewing in his chest. Maxwell turned, placing a hand on his chest, his blue eyes sparkling.
"Baby, you just seem so disappointed in everything you’ve been shown before. Like you can’t understand why nothing is working out. It’s just...it’s refreshing for me to be the one who isn’t so concerned about everything, while you know what you want, what you need, and what we need. I didn’t think I would like handing over control to someone else, but I am enjoying this." Maxwell told him warmly. Andrew frowned further, even as some of the tension in his body relaxed.
"Well I’m glad you’re getting something out of this. I’m feeling like a monster towards the poor realtor." Andrew muttered, feeling moody. Maxwell slid his hand up Andrew’s chest until he was cupping the back of his neck. He got on his tippy toes, pulling Andrew down and pressing a kiss against his lips, smiling.
"It’s alright Baby. We’re a big client of theirs, and they were right. We didn’t give them a list of things before we arrived, so this is what to be expected. Don’t be too disappointed, alright? You’re learning what you do and do not want. I’m just happy that we’re doing this together. I worried for a full week that I was never going to take this step with you, so I’m just happy we’re here." He chuckled, pulling away. "If nothing pleases you, what do you think about building a home?"
"Doesn’t that kind of defeat the whole point of moving quickly?" Andrew asked and Maxwell grinned.
"We can stay downtown in a high security apartment while we wait for it to be finished. I’m sure Mister Landlord could find a place for us to live." Maxwell teased and Andrew was reminded that he owned the land that is some of the biggest, and most bougie places to live right now. He sighed.
"Right. I forgot about that." He sighed. "Let’s...keep trying like this for now. We’ll revisit it after we’ve seen everything, and I have more of my head on my shoulders." Andrew told him and Maxwell nodded, giving him one more kiss before he moved back, smiling. "I hate the bathroom here, and the closet is too small." Andrew muttered. "The rest of the floorplan seems rushed." He continued and Maxwell’s eyes turned up as he smiled.
"Ah. A man after my own heart." Maxwell teased, raising their interlocked hands and kissing Andrew’s. Andrew shivered, not used to Maxwell being this affectionate outside, even if no one else was around.
"We...We should go see the realtor before I get thoughts in my head." Andrew mumbled, his face flushing and Maxwell gave his hand a squeeze.
"Alright, Mister true alpha sir. Let’s head to the next location!" Maxwell truly seemed to be enjoying himself and that took away some of the uncomfortable feelings Andrew had inside of him. If Maxwell was genuinely enjoying himself, then this was okay. That also meant Maxwell would let him know if he wasn’t having fun anymore as well.
