Chapter 290: I am a big boy. I can help others

Andrew felt a little strange about doing this.

Honestly, he felt like he wasn’t the right guy to do this, but May wasn’t really in the right headspace and actively couldn’t leave her son’s side. Ford, while able to speak, couldn’t do it either, and Maxwell and Andrew had promised to take care of everything.

May had forgotten her phone, Maxwell had a meeting as did Thomas and Ben. Luis was out of the country for a fashion show, and asking Jenny or Kim to do this during work hours felt a little...strange. Rose also had a big meeting with a client, and Andrew worried that it was the Beckett’s for only a brief second before both Maxwell and Rose laughed and told him that they wouldn’t have kept something like that from him.

So, it was in Andrew’s hands.

Andrew was so damn nervous.

He hadn’t been to May’s company since he was a kid the few times he’d come here with Richard after school since his Mom had work that went late into the night. He didn’t think he’d know anyone here, plus he was a giant now so he was worried he was going to scare others.

He’d already scared a few of the smaller, kinder looking omegas who were near the front door.

At least Andrew had dressed up. He was wearing a nice, deep, almost black burgundy suit with a nice cream undershirt. Maxwell helped him pick it out, and opted to go without a tie and leave the last few buttons undone for a more casual but professional look. He wasn’t here as a client, he was here to inform May’s boss of her extended absence, and Maxwell had told him to make sure to throw around his name.

Andrew wasn’t so sure if he could do that, but he would do his best.

He wasn’t leaving here until May had the time off she needed, without getting fired. He really, really didn’t want to be the one who instigated that. He knew this was a strange circumstance, but this was a strange world that they lived in. Hopefully, someone would listen to him.

Steeling himself, and clenched his fist before he headed for the front doors proper. He knew that he had probably made a few people anxious as he had just stood here, hyping himself up for the last five minutes before entering. He completely understood. He was a giant, wide, and looked a little too much like his father.

Thankfully, when he approached the front desk, they didn’t treat him differently.

Andrew was slightly relieved, and slightly disappointed that the building had changed in the time since he had last been here. It had gotten a face lift. It had been a space filled with lots of warmer tones, woods and gold before, but now it was lighter. Filled with creams, neutral shades, with black couches that kind of stuck out like sore thumbs, but looked comfortable at the very least. People moved through the space, sliding through security checks as if it was a normal business day, and for them it was.

Andrew was the one who felt like his nerves were taut, but this was the first time he’d truly been out on his own. He could do this. He was strong enough, he didn’t need to rely on Maxwell. He could do this. freewёbnoνel.com

He wasn’t the beta that he was used to be before this, but he was now true alpha Andrew. He was reliable. He was dependable. Being an alpha or beta didn’t change that.

"Good morning. How can I help you?" The receptionist was a nice woman, with a kind smile. Andrew gave her a smile back before he pulled out a sticky note that May had written for him with all of the important names that he needed to know.

"Ah hello. I’m here a little bit out of the blue, but I’m coming in place of one of the employees. She’s unable to come in today, and I need to speak to her boss. Ah! She’s Mrs. Gates, of the sales department, and I need to speak to Mr. Kensington." Andrew said. The receptionist stared at Andrew in surprise.

"Mrs. Gates? That’s rather unusual for her. Can I ask how you’re related to her?" Andrew froze. He hadn’t expected that he would be asked that. No, he did, it was part of the reason he had been so nervous.

"Ah, I’m a family friend. Have known her since I was a kid. My name is Dr. Andrew Knox." Andrew gave his name easily, not wanting to use his fake alias. She nodded, and took his words seriously. It probably had to do with the fact that May rarely used her time off. She was a good worker, had always been a good worker. This was quite sudden for her.

"Is there a reason I am unable to get in contact with her?" The receptionist asked, her tone a little icy. Andrew flushed.

"Yes. She left her phone in her office last night. She was in a bit of a rush. It’s...related to a family emergency." Andrew didn’t think it too strange to let her know that much, and the receptionist seemed to relax. He could understand why she was worried.

Andrew looked nothing like May. At all. He would have questioned anyone’s intention if they had showed up like this. He waited patiently as the receptionist did her duty, and thankfully, Mr. Kensington was willing to speak to him.

"Mrs. Gates did make an odd comment yesterday that she might not be in tomorrow. It was in passing, so Mr. Kensington is willing to speak with you. His secretary will be down in a moment to greet you and bring you up. You can have a seat in the chairs to the left." The receptionist pointed to another set of black couches and Andrew gave her a smile, shoving the little paper back into his pocket as he moved toward the waiting area.

He texted Maxwell, even though he was in a meeting, and let him know that he’d made it past the first step. He was able to meet with Mr. Kensington, so he hoped the next step went well.

Maxwell sent back a thumbs up, followed by several kisses and Andrew felt himself smile at his phone screen. Then Maxwell sent over a blurry shot of a security camera, showing how both May and Ford were asleep on two hospital beds next to Richard’s room. Andrew’s heart squeezed.

They refused to leave his side. Thankfully, we plan for this kind of thing all the time. They’re fine. Were asleep with Dr. Liu arrived in the morning.

Andrew appreciated the update and let out a relieved sigh before thanking Maxwell for taking care of them and shoving his phone into his pocket. It was only a few short minutes later that someone showed up to grab him.

It was a man, out of breath, with short, well kept brown hair, glasses that covered his brown eyes, and he wore a suit that complimented his frame.

"Dr. Knox? I am here to pick you up." He said, gathering himself and Andrew smiled. As Andrew stood up, he watched as the colour faded slightly from the secretary’s face and Andrew felt his own smile tighten. Yeah, he was a little worried how this interaction was going to go.

"Thank you. I’m sorry that this is such a strange series of events." Andrew apologised as the other man gathered himself quickly and guided Andrew through the security check. They got into an elevator right away, and Andrew was surprised that they went to a floor higher than the one May’s office was on.

"It’s alright. While it is strange, it’s even stranger that Mrs. Gates isn’t in. At this point, we’re all just worried about her. Any insight would be welcomed. She looked...unwell yesterday." The secretary seemed genuinely concerned and Andrew sighed.

"She’ll be fine, she just...needs some time. That’s why I’m here. Partially as a representative from the company I work for, while also as a family friend." Andrew told him with a smile and the secretary seemed to relax upon hearing more about his intentions.

"Oh? Your company has something to do with this?" He asked and Andrew nodded. The elevator doors opened and they exited out into a normal, relatively bland office. Some pops of colour here and there, this was exactly the kind of place that May had been working at for as long as Andrew had known her.

"Yes. I work with her son. In the same department, actually." That seemed to brighten him more.

"You know Dr. Gates? I didn’t want to assume, since you said you were also a Doctor, but that’s comforting to know." He said, his smile a little warmer, and Andrew relaxed. Thank goodness.

"Jackson, is this Dr. Knox?" A billowing, booming voice. It commanded attention and was perfect for sales. Andrew didn’t have to guess who it belonged to as a man came out of an office, adjusting his tie slightly with a warm grin. His blue eyes were warm, somewhat forced, and his salt and pepper hair was rugged. He was a handsome devil, and Andrew was sure he was the Mr. Kensington that Andrew needed to speak with.

He came towards them, offering a hand and gave Andrew a firm handshake in return. Andrew smiled as well.

"Yes. I’m Dr. Knox. I apologise for the strange situation. May didn’t realise she’d left her phone back at the office until she’d already arrived, and at that point, there was no way she was leaving to come back and get it." Mr. Kensington’s expression tightened slightly at the way Andrew used May’s name, but he didn’t show it obviously.

"Ah. That does sound like something she would do." It didn’t, which was why it was alarming, but Andrew held his tongue. "Would you like to come into my office to chat?" Andrew could sense that he was severely distrusting of Andrew. Andrew swallowed, releasing the other man’s hand and hoped beyond all hope that he was able to convince him that he wasn’t some creep trying to take advantage of May.

"Of course. A more secluded environment is appreciated, actually." Andrew told him with a smile of his own. Mr. Kensington’s own smile tightened. This was going to be a fight, and May hadn’t warned him at all.
