Chapter 25: Punishment For Sneaking

Immediately, one of the elderly inspectors took the lead, entering the room commandingly while the others followed swiftly. His sharp eyes scanned the room with practiced precision before they landed on Charles, then on Elliot, who was visibly trembling with beads of sweat forming on his forehead. Under the inspector’s piercing gaze, Elliot’s shivers deepened.

The inspector’s face hardened as he spoke, his voice deep and authoritative, "Isn’t this a one-person dorm? Why are there two people here? Who is the rightful owner of this room?"

His authoritative tone sent a chill down Elliot’s spine. He felt his heart race as Charles cleared his throat and finally spoke up, his voice calm but edged with frustration, "It’s my dorm room..." He sighed heavily, clearly irritated by the situation.

The inspector’s sharp eyes narrowed as he asked, "A friend, huh? What’s he doing here at this hour? Did he sleep here last night? And more importantly, do you two have any inappropriate relationship going on?"

The insinuation hung heavy in the air, causing Elliot’s face to flush with embarrassment. Almost simultaneously, they both responded, their voices firm and in sync:

"NO!"

"NO!"

The inspectors exchanged suspicious glances before the strictest of them took a step closer, his expression unrelenting as he demanded, "No? Then give a good and valid explanation as to what you’re doing here at this early hour of the morning."

His sharp gaze locked onto Elliot, who instinctively fumbled with the hem of his oversized shirt, his fingers nervously twisting the fabric. Thoughts raced chaotically through Elliot’s mind. What could he possibly say? How could he explain the unbelievable truth—that he had absorbed mana power, entered a space, emerged confused, and had come to Charles seeking guidance, only to forget about the curfew entirely?

Ridiculous. They’d never believe it. Even though it was the truth, there was no way they’d accept such an absurd explanation. Elliot realized his only option was to lie, to create a story that was at least somewhat believable. But what could he say? And that accusation about an inappropriate relationship... That part was false, wasn’t it? Or was it? He gulped, his mind flashing back to their earlier encounter in the bathroom. Yep, that had definitely been inappropriate. His face flushed again, and he mentally scolded himself. Focus, Elliot. Focus!

Taking a deep breath to steady himself and gain some semblance of confidence, he finally spoke, his words tumbling out quickly, "I’m guilty as charged... Well, all except for the inappropriate relationship part. I... My room is cramped and in terrible condition. I’ve complained countless times, but despite my pleas, the authorities—including you guys—refused to relocate me to another dorm. So... I snuck in here last night and slept until this morning, hiding in the cupboard. Charles didn’t even know I was here until he opened the cupboard and found me sleeping. He was completely unaware, so if anyone is to be punished, it should be me..."

He managed to get it all out in one breath and exhaled deeply, his shoulders slumping with relief. He was oblivious to the amused glance Charles was giving him, clearly impressed with how Elliot had managed to handle the situation without dragging him into the mess. It wasn’t as if Charles was at fault anyway. Elliot had barged into his room unannounced and nearly gotten him into trouble. So yes, it made sense for Elliot to take the blame. Still, Charles couldn’t help but silently commend Elliot for coming up with such a quick and convincing lie. It seemed that this weak mage had a talent for deception after all. Unconsciously, a slight smile formed on Charles’s lips.

Meanwhile, the lead inspector, unaware of the countless thoughts running through their minds, crossed his arms and scoffed, "Hah! Don’t think that just because you admitted to your crime and pleaded guilty, we’ll let you off the hook."

A short, stout inspector chimed in, his eyes narrowing in suspicion, "And how do we know you’re telling the truth about not having an inappropriate relationship? For all we know, you could be lying. You could be... well... gay."

Elliot’s face burned with humiliation, and Charles’s expression darkened. He groaned inwardly, frustration evident on his face. These inspectors were making things unnecessarily complicated. Had he been too lenient with them? Had they forgotten who he was? Even though they were powerful figures and technically above him in rank, they could at least show him some respect and process this matter more efficiently. All he wanted was for them to leave so he could finally sleep, especially after staying up all night.

Charles’s eyes flashed with annoyance as he retorted, his voice carrying a haughty edge, "If you don’t believe him, then surely you believe me, right? We don’t have any inappropriate relationship. In fact, I only met him for the first time yesterday at the mage archives. You can confirm that with other students if you really want to investigate."

His words were laced with smugness and arrogance, a deliberate reminder of his status. The inspectors visibly stiffened, their earlier authority faltering. Why wouldn’t it? They were well aware of his background and the power his family wielded. Showing him some respect was a necessity, not an option.

Elliot, unaware of Charles’s influential status, stared at him in awe, secretly admiring his boldness. He wanted to pat Charles on the back for standing up to the inspectors but held back, fearing how the inspectors might react to such arrogance. Yet, to his surprise, they only cleared their throats awkwardly, their hostility fading slightly.

Regaining his composure, the lead inspector turned to Elliot with a cold, unwavering gaze. His voice was stern as he announced, "Until we confirm everything you’ve said, you will be serving a punishment for your actions. And I assure you, once you’ve faced that punishment, you’ll never even think of entering another person’s room for any reason."

The threat in his tone was clear, sending a chill down Elliot’s spine. His imagination raced, conjuring terrifying images of the punishments that awaited him. The way they put it felt like he was going to face a death treath punishment. He swallowed nervously, his voice barely above a whisper as he asked, "Why do you say so?"
