Chapter 86: Heartless

His actions might not be the best but it was certain that he had set up the right example to warn anyone who wants to get involved in lowly underworld business.

He was willing to do even worse to anyone else who gets caught connecting the family to the underworld in such a disgraceful man.

His grandfather might not give them such a public disgrace but his grandfather would definitely ensure they don’t survive the decision they made.

It was just too normal in his life to lose something in an attempt to gain something. He wasn’t completely indifferent over the news but he was certain the victims of those attacks would be glad about the vengeance.

He tried to get back to the work he was doing before he got the report from his secretary but the weight of the news did not get lifted even as he tried to justify his actions.

From the moment he knew they were behind it, there were so many people he would have blamed for it including the doctor who did organ harvesting and those in charge of disposing of the body.

He had ways to keep his family completely out of it but he chose to dispose of his granduncle as though it was an opportunity he had been waiting for.

He felt his chest pounding painfully in his chest. He was certain his grandfather would still consider family in the decision he made. His grandfather might not even hurt his brother and nephew as he imagined.

The word failure filled his mind. The more he tried to justify his actions, the more he felt cruel to his family, a failure of an heir and a disappointment to his grandfather.

He loosened his tie but that did not stop the breathlessness that overwhelmed him as he coughed in an attempt to salvage his situation. He unbuttoned the first few buttons of his shirt and tried to take in deep slow breaths.

"Are you okay?" Kiyoshi’s voice came from the driver’s seat as he decelerated the car.

Kiyoshi’s voice caused him to snap out of his thoughts. He remembered who he was. He was a chairman and any moment of weakness could be used against him.

He made a decision and got the repercussions of it, he could not beat himself up for it because that would most definitely lead to making even crazier decisions he would regret.

The livelihood of millions rested on his shoulders and he had to be in the best mental state to ensure they don’t lose it. His granduncle controlled a small part of their business and he would have handled that properly.

Kiyoshi’s brow was a bit furrowed even as he accelerated towards their office building. It was when he parked the car that Kiyoshi found out what happened to Haruki’s granduncle and his son.

"I know," Haruki stopped Kiyoshi from repeating what he had just read. "Have them bring back their bodies for proper funeral after all these settle down. They are a part of the family, it is only right we send them off properly. Also, I need you to find Souta."

Kiyoshi accepted the order as they walked into the building. Work was as usual without anything major until lunchtime time which Haruki wanted to ignore at first but he got a message from the doctor to remember to eat lunch.

He hesitated but he decided to go out of the building to eat at one of his restaurants. He ordered his meal and ate blocking off every worry that tried to creep in.

He had no one to answer to, after all, his grand uncle and his son did not die in the country. They did not even have any business in that country perhaps that was the reason they chose to flee to that country.

He would not say he was completely without power in that country because money could go a long way to getting anything he wanted done but no one was going to blame directly for their death.

The country was not quite prosperous but their crime rate was low so such inhumane killing caused an uproar in the country. The victims were foreigners but that did not mean the interviewed locals were going to sleep well in their beds.

They expressed their worries and their police were serious about the investigation. They did not want to believe the criminal was a local so according to the report, they were focusing their investigations on the foreigners in the country.

The crime has caused worry and an uproar, they were obviously not going to let the criminal get away with the crime.

Corruption wasn’t nonexistent in that country like every country on the globe but with a case that broke the entire country and the internet, they were not going to let the criminal go or at least, they will need a scapegoat.

Crimes were also heavily punished in that country so whoever was chosen as the scapegoat would be sent to the gallows literally which means whoever the culprit will use would have to be someone ready and not afraid to die.

When Haruki realized he had not focused on the meal he was eating but on the case, he sighed and rubbed his eyes lightly. One person died on the side of the prime minister but the prime minister had the guts to go after three people.

As much as Haruki tried to not think about it, perhaps because he needed someone to blame for everything, he could not help but feel that the prime minister had taken too much in the name of vengeance.

He got threefold of what he lost and that was unfair in this game. His grand-uncle could have died since he was the major mastermind behind the business but his sons should not have died.

Haruki felt a need for vengeance the more he thought of it. He wanted to punish the minister. That new thought flooded his mind with plans on how he could end the man’s life in a way anyone who hears of it would never challenge his power.

He felt like he had played the saint for too long and it was time for him to get some of his well-skilled men to work. The fact that he was trying to make the business obviously not involved in the underworld does not mean he should accept such a blow while sitting down.

Stepping out of the restaurant into the hot sun, he squinted slightly as his eyes got used to the brightness of the outside world. He got to the door of the car only to hear a loud wail.

It came with pain, like an injured animal, like someone who has lost all and all hope. It was when the wail came again, he turned to the direction the sound came from.

It was his granduncle’s wife whose weak body was supported by her daughter-in-law on one side and her daughter on the other side, standing at the other end of the parking lot. When their gaze met, it was as though all the weakness she felt disappeared.

She pushed them weakly away from her and hurried to Haruki. Only after four strides, her part was blocked by one of Haruki’s guards.

He was dressed like a regular office worker looking as though he was simply out on a lunch break but he was one of the few guards stationed at strategic places to ensure Haruki’s safety.

Three others stepped out when the other two women made advances towards the woman. Haruki looked at the woman before raising his hand to indicate they let them come forward.

"How could you?" the old woman whose hair was completely grey and a frame bent forward as though she was two decades older than her late husband cried when she got to Haruki. She looked more than three decades older than the last time he saw her.

Haruki met her gaze calmly with the right amount of coldness in his gaze as he asked, "Do you intend to go get their bodies back?" When the woman appeared too shocked to respond he added, "You don’t have to worry, I have ordered my men to bring their bodies for the proper funeral rites."

The woman slumped to the floor as though her knees couldn’t function anymore. She began wailing loudly. "Whatever they did, they didn’t deserve such death."

Haruki wanted to remind her of the number of people who fell victim to the business her husband opened and pushed his subordinates to reach a certain monthly quota but he knew she was also a grieving mother, so he remained silent.

"So, what do you prefer?" Haruki asked with a trace of impatient in his voice. "Do my men handle everything to bring their bodies back or do you simply want them to assist you to bring their bodies back?"

"You are so heartless, evil, are you even human?!" the woman screamed at him from her position sitting on the floor.

"I will give you time to think about it. You can call my assistant with your response when you are ready but we can’t waste too much time," Haruki told her almost too calmly as he turned back to his car.
