Chapter 35: Something Unexpectedly

Arcane’s gaze softened, a look he had never shown anyone since his mother’s death. Even Arcane himself sometimes forgot when he had last smiled like that.

But Julian managed to bring back the smile and the warmth that had been missing from him all this time. Though he didn’t understand why he could feel this way toward someone like Julian, he was very happy.

"I was so afraid to express my feelings to you. I was the one who made the rule that we shouldn’t like each other, but I was also the one who broke it. But I don’t regret it," said Arcane.

Now they were sitting side by side on the sofa, with Julian leaning on her shoulder. She felt much better and relieved now that she had expressed her feelings.

Although it wasn’t a romantic situation, knowing that Julian felt the same way made her very happy.

Julian himself felt his heart warm, filled with happiness because Arcane hadn’t just been acting all this time. The man truly liked him.

"So do you think this fake marriage is over or..."

Arcane immediately turned to him. "Yes, this contract marriage is over because we both broke the rules." 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

However, he continued his sentence right away. "Because this marriage has already become a real marriage. We both know that we like each other. Even if we become lovers, our names are already officially registered as a married couple."

So right then and there, Arcane decided to make the marriage a real one.

"Or would you rather we divorce and become ordinary lovers, then get married again afterwards?"

Julian furrowed his brow. That would only make things more complicated and seem so strange. He felt it was better to leave things as they were than to follow Arcane’s suggestion.

"Let’s just live our lives as they are now! And if someday there is something that doesn’t work between us, we can divorce and live our own lives," he said.

Hearing his answer, Arcane nodded in agreement and they continued their relationship in the bond of marriage, even though it was only registered in a book.

He promised that one day he would throw a big party for their wedding, but only after all his goals were achieved and he leave the school.

"I will come to the city where you were born, meet your parents, and ask for their blessing. After all, they are still your parents, and they should know everything that has happened between us," said Arcane.

"But why did you choose to leave that school after achieving your goal? What exactly was your main purpose for going to teach at Acrenimia High School?" Until now, Julian was still very curious about Arcane’s main focus in teaching at that school, even though there were many other schools offering higher salaries.

For a moment, the man was silent, thinking about the answer he would give, because he had never told anyone this before except his three friends.

But now, Julian was his lover and husband, so Arcane thought Julian had the right to know his main goal. Moreover, he had brought the young man to where he was now.

"It’s a very complicated story. So I want you to listen carefully, but I don’t want you to judge the story I’m about to tell you," he said.

Julian felt that this story must have had a profound effect on Arcane’s life, for him to say that. He nodded in agreement and promised not to judge anything he heard from him.

"Just trust me! I promise I won’t say anything about your story, let alone tell anyone else."

Feeling that he could tell him this, Arcane finally told him about his goal.

"Do you remember me telling you about my mother who gave birth to me when she was only 19 years old?" asked Arcane, to which Julian nodded his head.

He remembers that Arcane’s mother, Wilona Romano, raised Arcane alone because she was kicked out by her parents after they found out she was pregnant.

"My mother chose to keep me rather than get rid of me like her parents wanted. She took me to another city where my mother is now buried. Since I was a child, I never knew who my father was and why my mother had to raise me alone," he continued.

Finally, Wilona passed away when Arcane was 16 years old. At that time, Arcane was still so sad and didn’t want to touch his mother’s belongings after her death.

He left all her belongings where they were, just as they had been when his mother was still alive, until he turned 18. At that time, he had to go to college in the city where Arcane and Julian currently live.

It was then that he unpacked some of his mother’s belongings and saw a box he had never seen before. Inside the box were letters that Wilona had written specifically for Arcane, which she had intended to give him if she died someday.

When Arcane saw the contents of the box, he found a photo of a man with his mother, who was still wearing her school uniform. He read the letter his mother had left, which told him how he came to be in her arms.

"In the letter, she also described how she felt about the man in the photo. The man who turned out to be my father, someone she still loved until death took her. And it was only then that I saw what my father was like," said Arcane.

Julian, who listened to the entire story, felt his heart break. He couldn’t imagine how Arcane felt when he first found the box with the letters that had been deliberately written for him.

This meant that Arcane now knew who his father was and how he came to be with his mother.

The most surprising thing for Julian was that Arcane’s father was actually his mother’s teacher. Her teacher when she was in high school, where they secretly had a relationship because they loved each other.

"Do you still have that photo?" Julian asked again.

The red haired man took out his wallet and pulled out a photo from it. When Julian saw the photo, he recognized Arcane’s mother, Wilona, who looked young at 18 years old. The man beside her also looked young, but Julian was sure he was over 20 years old.

Wilona’s face did resemble Arcane’s, but when Julian saw the face of the man who was Arcane’s father, he felt like he recognized him.

Upon closer inspection, he realized he had met this man before. And now he understood why Arcane was at Acrenimia High School.

"Wait... This man—" He turned sharply to Arcane, who confirmed it with a nod..
