Booking Glory-Chapter 25: Joining Commentary - Part 2
"Guys, whose music is this?" Irvin piped in before the conversation between the duo could get any more heated.
"I don’t know. I haven’t heard this before," Dallas said playing along.
By now, Dacey’s new music was playing. The setup was that it was an entirely new look to Dacey. So, the commentators were not supposed to know who it was. Dallas and Irvin played it well.
"I am also confused. But, whoever this is. I am digging this," Rob said jovially as he tried to groove to the music sitting on the chair. "It’s good. It has got that vibe to it. I am really liking this. Whoever it is, I have become a fan of them already."
"You are already a fan without even seeing the person wrestle?" Dallas asked snidely.
"They have got good music sense Dallas. And it is enough for me!!!" Rob exclaimed grooving to the music.
"You better not fall off your chair, Rob," Dallas chuckled shaking his head.
"Don’t worry, I am not old like you," Rob shot back instinctively and winced looking at Dallas after realizing what he was saying.
Channeling Jerry "The King" Lawler was bound to cause some issues. The King was known for his inappropriate comments and sheer disregard for anyone apart from JR.
Irvin was laughing at what Rob said. Dallas merely threw an unimpressed stare at Rob.
"This old man can whip your butt ten ways to Sunday," Dallas retorted.
"Dream on, old man. I can take you anywhere anytime," Rob continued his posing without breaking character.
As he said that, Rob was vigorously shaking his head and waving his hands at Dallas. Rob knew that if it came to a fight, Dallas would really whoop his ass. So, he didn’t want any misunderstandings.
Irvin was now close to falling off his chair. He had removed his headset and was laughing openly by now. Dallas merely smiled and did a cutthroat gesture. Rob mimicked dying causing Irvin to get up and walk away.
Just then, Dacey came out of the curtain in the video. Rob put away his antics and concentrated once more on the work.
"I knew it! What did I say!? What did I say!? It’s the Goddess Dacey herself! Look at her, Dallas! Don’t tell me your heart isn’t racing now. And who else will have such great music as their entrance theme? I am telling you Dacey Surestone knows what she is doing!" Rob crowed.
"The only one who is excited is you, Rob. Look at the crowd! They are booing her. And look at her, she is shell-shocked by the reception she is receiving," Dallas commented from the side.
"These ungrateful morons should be glad the Goddess graced them with her presence. Instead of cheering for her, these wretches are booing. And what do you mean the Goddess is shell-shocked? Look at her! She is like a Queen surveying her subjects," Rob spoke as the camera angle changed to focus on Dacey’s face.
"First Goddess, now Queen? I am sure that you are overpraising her. She is nothing but a backstabbing coward!" Dallas replied heatedly.
"Wash your mouth Dallas! How dare you insult the Goddess like that? Be careful that her attention doesn’t turn to you! Lest she smites you from there!" Rob was on a roll now.
Dallas merely raised his eyebrows to that statement.
"If she needs to smite people who disagree with her actions, she has over 1000 fans here who she needs to smite!" Dallas said shaking his head.
"Keep quiet Dallas! No one asked your opinion! The time has come for the Goddess to walk into the ring!" Rob shot back as Dacey started walking towards the ring.
"Look at her! She is perfect in every sense. She doesn’t pander to these peasants as everyone does. Look at her walk Dallas. Don’t tell me your heart isn’t racing, looking at the Goddess!" Rob cried.
"I don’t know about my heart, but I am sure that the fans in the arena are telling her exactly what they think of her!" Dallas rallied beautifully causing Rob to smile.
He really didn’t expect Dallas to catch on to the dynamic this quickly. It was easy to bounce off each other than to do it alone. It was the charm of having an on-air rivalry.
Dacey had by then walked to the ring and she was posing around.
"Bask in Goddess’s glory Dallas. You too Irvin. It is not often the Goddess graces us with her presence," Rob said trying to liven up the situation there.
"And why is that?" Irvin asked snidely.
"Why are you asking me? If it is up to me I will book her to grace us with her presence every week," Rob said in reply. "Look at her Irvin! She is perfect all around. In her looks, her style, her demeanor, and even while standing there still Dacey Surestone is perfect in every way. That’s why she is the Goddess!"
"I am not sure Dacey would be out here for long. With the way the crowd is booing her, your Goddess needs to be careful lest she gets booed out of the building," Dallas once more piped in disharmoniously.
"That would be a huge missed opportunity for these ungrateful wretches here in Longham City!" Rob said as Dacey moved to get the microphone. "Quiet down people! The Goddess is going to address us! "
Dallas looked at Rob with a "Are you kidding me?" look. Rob merely shrugged his shoulders in response to it.
"I don’t think this crowd wants to hear her excuses, Rob. They are close to booing her out of the building," Irvin piped in as Dacey began to freeze there inside the ring.
"These people need to shut up and listen! It is not often that the Goddess deigns to address us. If these morons don’t quiet down, the Goddess might just not speak out," Rob said anxiously.
"I don’t think that’s a problem. No one wants to hear her excuses!" Dallas shot back.
"Isn’t that mighty convenient for you Dallas? You wouldn’t have to watch the Goddess expose Diana Wharton’s hypocritical face, would you? I am betting you are rooting for that. You and all these morons," Rob spouted nonsense nonstop.
"The only hypocrite here is you. You and that damn coward in the ring," Dallas didn’t give an inch.
"Mind your words Dallas. You may insult me, but I won’t allow you to insult my Goddess!" Rob shot back faking anger.
"Come on boy, I will teach you some respect. Both you and that coward in the ring need to learn some respect," Dallas fired back. "What she did on <Break Out> was disrespectful to this entire industry. I can’t wait to see her get booed off this building by the loyal fans."
"You are delusional Dallas. You and this damn crowd of morons are all delusional," Rob said heatedly.
Rob and Dallas were both arguing heatedly as they didn’t want the segment to become boring. With Dacey frozen inside the ring, they needed to do a lot to keep things interesting.
"All that aside, Rob, Dallas, do you think Dacey has any excuse for her heinous actions at <Break Out>?"
"She has got nothing to say. Look at her, she is standing there tongue-tied," Dallas said to Irvin.
"Don’t twist the truth Dallas. The Goddess is merely waiting for these morons to pipe down and listen. These idiots of Longham City need to shut up now and let the Goddess speak!" Rob said heatedly.
"Looks like your Goddess is out of words, Rob. And this crowd isn’t in the mood to listen to her excuses, clearly!" Irvin piped in to add more chaos.
"Mark my words, these morons will be begging to hear from the Goddess soon," Rob said viciously.
Just then, the chants began.
<Why Dacey Why!?>
<Why Dacey Why!?>
<Why Dacey Why!?>
<Why Dacey Why!?>
<Why Dacey Why!?>
"What did I tell you? These morons don’t deserve an answer. If I was the Goddess, I would just leave them hanging," Rob said snidely.
"She owes everyone here an explanation Rob. And the crowd is demanding it," Dallas shot back.
"The Goddess doesn’t owe these morons anything. She should just let them stew for being so unruly towards her," Rob once more spouted nonsense with his eyes open.
"You wanna know why?" Dacey’s words echoed from the screen.
"Hmmph, the Goddess is too merciful. She took pity on these morons and is going to address them. They better pipe down and shut their traps. Lest they miss what the Goddess says," Rob once more went off causing both Dallas and Irvin to look at him incredulously.
Rob merely smiled sheepishly as Dacey began working the crowd.
"I bet you are dying to know why Dallas. If it were me, I would let you die in ignorance," Rob piped in when he found a gap in Dacey’s work.
"I am not sure that I want to hear the spiel that spews out of her mouth," Dallas said in reply as Dacey came to the center.
"Here’s why?"
Dacey flipped off the crowd.
"Is she nuts! She is flipping off the entire crowd!" Irvin said in disbelief.
"Ha ha ha... These morons deserved it for being disrespectful towards the Goddess. Way to go Goddess! These idiots don’t deserve you wasting your breath!" Rob crowed.
"The only one that is disrespectful here is that coward in the ring," Dallas said angrily. "She ought to be suspended for this."
"No one in their right mind will do that, Dallas."
"You really wanna know why?
"Well, I don’t feel like telling you. None of you morons deserve an explanation!"
Dacey said and dropped the mic in the ring before vacating the ring.
"Ha ha ha... What did I say? None of these morons deserve an explanation from the Goddess. The Goddess said it straight. None of them deserved an explanation with how rowdy and rude they were," Rob crowed once more as Dacey began to make her way back.
"This is such a disgraceful behavior. No one should condone this Rob," Dallas said passionately from the side.
"They deserved it. If they had kept quiet the Goddess might have taken pity on them and explained her actions," Rob shot back with equal passion. "Now, she had to put them in their place."
"This proves nothing. This only shows that Dacey Surestone is a disrespectful coward who has no decency. And she even flipped the entire crowd off," Dallas said fiercely.
"Just because the Goddess doesn’t explain her actions, it doesn’t make her a coward Dallas. The Goddess was obviously fed up with the disrespect this crowd showed her and had to put them in their place."
"Guys, Dacey Surestone is once again flipping the crowd off!" Irvin crowed from the side.
"Such arrogant display!"
"I have never seen a wrestler treat the crowd like this before. She just flipped them off on national TV! National TV! I say."
"Mr. Gibson ought to fire her!"
"I totally agree. She has gone way over the line here. She has lost the spirit of a pro wrestler completely. She needs to answer for her actions!"
"You guys need to chill! This crowd obviously deserved this. Look, the Goddess is waving at me! Goodbye Goddess! Hope you have a great day! Just forget these morons. They don’t deserve your considerations," Rob once again began to spout nonsense.
The video came to an end and the trio stopped recording at that time. Rob removed his headset and looked at the veterans with trepidation.
Neither Dallas nor Irvin spoke. They merely removed their headset and relaxed a little. The silence lasted for a while before Irvin broke it.
"Let’s watch the segment and see the effect."
Dallas nodded in agreement, leaving Rob to sit and stew in silence.
*****
"This sounds good," Dallas commented from the side as they watched the video playing in front of them.
Rob was really nervous by this point. He wanted the two veterans to acknowledge that his idea had merit. Apart from proving himself to these old guys, he also wanted them to not be constrained in their thinking in the future.
This was easier said than done.
What they had now in mind was something that had been handed down for a few generations. To alter such thinking and make them be bolder in their future attempts was no small thing to do.
Rob had already experienced the stubbornness of traditionalists before this. When he interviewed for AWF, he had seen how bad traditionalists reacted when he tried to introduce something that was brand new to them.
To Rob, these ideas were tried and tested over time. However, to others, these were bold attempts that had no guarantee of success. To ask them to step out of their comfort zone and try new things that had no prior example was something very hard to do.
It was already reflecting Rob’s interactions with Robin, Mr. Gibson, and Mr. Wolfe. Even though they had tasted some success with Rob’s booking ideas, the three still remained skeptical of Rob’s plan to introduce heel vs face booking. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Until now, the only guaranteed success they had seen was the booking of the Triple Threat Match. It was a variation of traditional booking and didn’t have much change in new ways of booking. So, they were fine with it.
If asked whether they would go for booking another Triple Threat Match, they would do it in a heartbeat as it has already proven its worth. However, the storyline with Dacey and Diana is the one that tested Rob’s brand new ideas.
Rob had been fielding a lot of questions and experiencing opposition from those three in regards to booking Dacey and Diana’s storyline the way he wanted. Now, before he could even establish success, he was here trying to alter another facet of established business practice with the same idea.
So, Rob knew that his idea would never get approval if it didn’t the two veteran commentators here opposed implementing it. So, the reactions of the two were very important to Rob.
"Yeah, it sounds more interesting to hear. The entire facet of the segment seems to have changed a bit. Dacey’s faults aren’t magnified with this. We can gloss over her mistakes by shifting the focus to the fight between you two," Irvin analyzed from the side.
"And I have to say, your arguments with Rob sound hilarious to listen to. I have never heard commentary like this before," Irvin continued.
Dallas chuckled at that. It was clear from his expression that he too enjoyed it a lot.
"It is like hearing two housewives arguing," Dallas said shooting a look at Rob.
"Nah, it is like hearing a wife and mistress arguing. You two don’t seem to agree on anything," Irvin chuckled along.
"So, what do you guys think?" Rob asked when the video came to an end.
"Good..." Dallas said frankly. "But..."
"That’s the thing, kid," Irvin sighed shooting a look at Dallas for confirmation. "This is good. We both agree on that. But, my point still stands. We are only booking Dacey like this for now. There is no need to alter the entire trajectory of our work to support one person. I hope you understand where we are coming from."
Rob felt like bashing his head on the wall. It was clear to him that they both liked it. However, they didn’t seem to want to do it despite their liking. And their reason too sounded genuine. Rob couldn’t find any fault with that.
"We can implement this for all the segments. Have the rivalry be like old men arguing throughout the show," Rob didn’t give up.
"But..." Dallas hesitated a bit.
"But, how do we implement it without someone like Dacey to bounce off? This entire segment it was your different views regarding Dacey that were carrying the conversation," Irvin didn’t hesitate. He was very open.
Rob frowned as he realized that the old man might have a point. Without a heel to present an opportunity for the contradiction to erupt, it didn’t seem possible to carry on this for the entire show.
"You know what, let us give this a try with a match and a normal segment. We can see how this turns out and then decide," Irvin said shooting a sly look at Dallas.
Dallas merely nodded, but there was a twinkle present in his eyes.
Rob could only grudgingly agree. He was glad that Irvin was not throwing the idea away completely. It was clear that both Irvin and Dallas worried about the feasibility and practicality of the idea. They weren’t against it, just not sure about it.
The only way to see if it works was to try a trial run. Just like how they did it with the Dacey segment. However, this time there will be no heel for Rob to shoot his mouth about. This would determine whether such a thing was possible or not.
