Born a Monster-Chapter 542 - 542 Neegling Hunt
542 Neegling Hunt
βOkay.β Negla said. βSo we need Neeglings, but strapped to our armor rather than just to use on the little bits of taint we have spattered here.β ππ³ππππππππ«β―l.cππ
βAre you LISTENING?β Nogar asked. βWe. Should. Run.β
βOr we could burn it.β Mohr said. βItβs just flesh, right?β
I blinked. βIt could be a lot of flesh.β I said.
βHow much flesh are we talking about?β Doran asked.
Nogar answered. βItβll mass equal to about a squad or two. But thatβs not the worst of it. It will have duplicate organs, which will make it resistant to criticals.β
Zoltar stroked his chin. βSo itβs a lot of life force all in one place. Itβll take us a while, even blasting it with our greatest spells.β
βIf the Taint is too strong, then we might not even have those spells.β Mohr said.
βThus the Neeglings.β Negla said.
.....
βIt doesnβt work like that.β Nogar said. βAt best, the Taint will divide between the neegling and yourself. At best.β
βSo, what?β Negla asked. βThree or four neeglings each?β
βShall I start catching neeglings?β I asked.
βYes, you must.β Negla said.
βWorthless!β Nogar said. βI need you here, convincing my circle that this is DUMB!β
βIs this dumb?β Doran asked me.
βItβs a legitimate horror.β I said. βTaint will keep us from using our strongest magics. If we get close, itβs just going to eat us with a touch. If we manage to hold at range, we know of at least one magical ability it has. Iβm not sure how skilled our... allies... are with their weapons.β
I scratched the right side of my jaw. βIt took us two days to walk here. Could we call for reinforcements?β
Zoltar snorted. βWe know what the Voice of Rakkal would say about that.β
βAll right. If we ARE doing this, we need a plan.β I said.
βTraitor.β Nogar spat toward me. That curse spiraled, began gathering Taint into itself before...
βBurn Curse.β Mohr cast, the flames blinding both myself and Nogar.
βI should ask the morlocks for a spear.β Negla said. βWolf magics arenβt going to be of a lot of use here.β
Mohr made a gesture behind her back. βYou could summon spirit wolves.β he told her.
βIβve only got the two of them.β she said, βAnd... Spirits... Taint...β
Zoltar scrunched up his face. βCould they ride in the bodies of plains cats? I mean, Iβd hate doing that if I were a wolf spirit, but its better than...β
βCould we strap neeglings to the back of a plains cat?β she asked.
βNegla.β Doran said, βPlease stop with the neeglings. Weβd have to enchant the damn animals.β
βWait.β I said. βIs that the problem with using them to help absorb Taint?β
I drew up the files holding everything I knew about Lifeshaper.
βBad news?β Mohr asked.
βI have enough Lifeshaper powers to do half of one. Itβs not like feeding them each a healing potion would...β
Doran slapped his thighs. βPotions! Genius. Negla, Critter. Go forth. See if we can get twelve neeglings.β
βThereβs only four within range.β I said.
Negla punched me in the shoulder. βThen we walk and find more. Come. Who wants to do boring planning, anyway?β
βWell, I do.β I said, following her anyway.
When we were a safe distance away, she said, βYou have nothing that resembles tact, do you?β
I shrugged. βTruthspeaker. Titanspawn. People hate me anyway, why should I be nice to those who wonβt be nice to me?β
βOne catches more flies, as the saying goes.β
βFlies taste terrible.β I said, to which she laughed.
βSo why do you think we were sent away just as we were beginning to form the plan?β she asked.
βNogar doesnβt want the plan at all. Heβd rather us run and leave a horror at the flank.β
βA horror currently stuck in a building.β she said.
βWhich will, sooner or later, get out.β I said. βTrue, Iβd rather face it with an army. And Iβm not enthused about doing it with a bunch of morlocks who might just try to kill us afterward, but it needs to be done.β
She snorted. βYou think this can be done?β
βYou donβt?β I asked. βWhy the insistence on neeglings, then?β
She rolled her eyes. βIβd rather not get Tainted. As an adept, magic is a good part of my life. I like the idea of my pack hounding something big, bringing it low to the ground. But by the same token, Iβm not a fool. This sounds like something that kill some of us.β
I whispered. βThis is why we need the best plan we can get.β
βOh, are the neeglings... never mind, I see them.β she whispered back.
Now neeglings are a lot like long-eared rabbits. They burrow, they primarily eat vegetation, and they poop everywhere. And, theyβre not like rabbits. They have oily quills among their fur, and claws, and have no problems biting plains cats when there are enough of them.
Oh, and theyβre FAST.
One can be forgiven for thinking itβs magical. Itβs a combination of evolutions. Adrenaline, metabolism, little...
What? I like evolutions. Nature is a wonderful and varied thing.
Oh.
I suppose I donβt want to tell this story, or this part of the story, depending upon how one views things.
But my desires are not relevant to what actually happened back then, are they?
We formed a system group, so that we could share my Beast Senses, plan our movements without risking our voices giving us away.
<Youβre a lot bigger inside your own head.> she sent. <You donβt have to shout.>
<Sorry. > I toned down my sendings. <Iβm used to less sensitive group members.>
Her smile was a thing predatory and fueled by hunger.
<This will take long enough without stopping to cook one of them!> I admonished.
<Are you serious about not taking the Aware ones? Weβre long enough. Weβll be out all day.>
I grunted, and four pairs of ears turned my way.
<Right. > I sent. <Sorry. >
<Is someone there?> the mother sent. <We can hear you, you know.>
I had been crouched, but stood to what height I could.
<We mean you no ill.> I sent. <Those who can ask not to be eaten should be.>
<Thatβs an exception out here.> the father sent. <Not the rule.>
βWhat are you DOING?β Negla asked. Ζπ³π²ππππππ¨vπ¦l.πoπ¦
βTheyβre sentient.β I said. βNeedless harm is off limits.β
βAssfart.β she replied.
<So, > the father asked, <Why are you here?>
<Well, weβre hunting for a dozen non-sentient neeglings.> I sent. <I donβt suppose you know where we should look?>
The mother sent a wave of [Disgust]. <As if weβd help you do that. You know, even the animals sometimes give birth to Awakened.>
<I thought that was becoming a rarity.> I said.
<Rare isnβt the same thing as nonexistent.> father replied.
<I thank you for your honesty.> I said.
<You might look in the north by northwest.> one of the daughters said.
<Bellflower! > mother snapped. <Do be silent!>
Well, we DID look there, and found a pack of gaunt, mangy plains cats. They didnβt share my religious views, and...
There were seven of them, and even lean, they were about double the mass of neeglings.
βYou canβt be serious.β
.....
βOf course I am.β Negla replied.
The pack closed around us.
βIf you donβt kill any of them,β she said, βI think we can tie them up, put them in bags, and use them the same way the neeglings would have.
I sighed. βThey are aware.β
βIβm not asking you to DO anything.β she argued, βOnly to not kill any of them. Weβll do the rest.β
I lowered my vision, and took in a long blink. Thatβs when the one nearest me leapt at my head.
βThere may be...β I swatted it to the side with my shield. βA better solution.β
She snarled, taking on a layer of fur, her hands becoming paws. βIf you can find it, then letβs do that. But Wolf rarely shows mercy to those who would hunt it.β
I squinted. βIβd never really liked plains cats, given that one of my early encounters one of them had disemboweled me.β
One of them feinted, so that another could bite my left thigh and tried to pull me off balance.
βThere you go.β she said. βThey deserve it.β
βBut they donβt.β I said. βThese are a different set of cats entirely.β
I brought a fist down on the skull of the one to my left, turned right just in time to catch another on my shield.
βHey!β Negla said. βAlive, remember?β
βEven if you do eventually convince me, theyβre not making this easy.β I said.
βHiss, hiss, easy. Hiss, hiss.β she mocked, grasping at empty air where there had been a catβs neck.
<Combination move. Shield Strike. Flip Throw.>
I took note of how my System moved my body, so that I could practice how to do it manually. βI donβt think weβre going to be in shape to do this again. How sure are you that we can improvise muzzles?β
βI dunno.β she said. βHow much rope do you have?β
βYou didnβt bring rope?β I asked.
βWe came out here for neeglings!β she reminded me. βI have sacks and twine.β
I sighed, pulled my dagger from inventory.
βHey, we want them alive!β she shouted.
βI guess weβll see.β I said.
