Chapter 57: He desired no one but her

Chapter 57

Seraphina had just finished her bath and was sitting in front of her mirror, allowing the maids to dress her, all while a permanent blush was plastered to her face as thoughts of the previous night and this morning flooded her memories. The maids seemed to have noticed the several red spots on her skin because they had been whispering to themselves and chuckling in excitement about what might have transpired.

Suddenly, the door swung open without any warning, the sound of it crashing against the wall echoing in the stillness. Both Seraphina and the maids froze, their bodies tensing instinctively. Who the hell was that?

The woman who barged into the room didn’t look familiar. Her expression was taunting, a smug smile on her lips as she walked in like she owned the place. Seraphina’s brows furrowed. She didn’t know who that was, but this was definitely her room. Who did this bitch think she was?

Her eyes immediately locked onto Seraphina, and the moment they met, Karine’s confidence faltered for just a second. She couldn’t help herself, she stood there, mesmerized by Seraphina’s beauty. It was as if the woman before her wasn’t just a person but something otherworldly, almost divine. That flowing silver hair, and those spell bounding purple eyes, they made her look so...

Seraphina, sensing the woman’s hesitation, stiffened her back and composed herself. "Can I help you?" she asked coolly, her voice laced with an edge of impatience.

The woman snapped back to reality, her lips curling into a sly smile. "Are you his wife?" she asked, her tone dripping with sarcasm.

Seraphina’s eyes narrowed slightly, her patience wearing thin. Was that all she had to ask after barging in and interupting her peaceful moment? "If you’re asking about Rhydian, then yes," she responded, her words clipped.

Karine’s smirk widened, and she stepped further into the room, ignoring the unspoken invitation to leave from both Seraphina and the maids with her. Her eyes wandered over Seraphina’s attire and demeanor with an almost mocking curiosity. "A wife, huh?" Karine chuckled softly. "Well, that’s interesting, but tell me... Do you know why he really married you? Was it for love? Or perhaps... for your blood?" She let the words linger, her gaze challenging Seraphina.

Seraphina felt her muscles tense as she stood up straight, narrowing her eyes. She could feel the heat of the woman’s words burning, but she refused to show any weakness. The maids, sensing the tension, hurriedly stepped back, casting wary glances at the woman now intruding upon the queen’s personal space.

Karine continued, oblivious to the growing frost in Seraphina’s demeanor. "You know, Rhydian might pretend he’s happy with you, but trust me, he doesn’t feel anything for you. The only reason he’s tolerating you is because the court wants this marriage. It has nothing to do with his feelings. He’d get rid of you in a heartbeat if someone more... suitable came along."

Seraphina’s expression didn’t falter, but her insides began to churn with anger. Karine’s words were like venom, each one dripping with malice, each one trying to chip away at her confidence, at her sense of security in her marriage with Rhydian.

Karine’s smile grew, her voice almost playful now, "Don’t you worry, darling. I’ve been his betrothed for years. The two of us, we’ve been through a lot. I’m sure I could remind him of what he’s truly missing." She took a step closer to Seraphina, her gaze assessing the woman like she was a target. "You might be his wife now, but in his heart, you’ll always be second place."

Seraphina’s eyes locked onto Karine’s, her face frozen in a cold mask. She felt a dangerous wave of rage start to rise within her, but she controlled it, focusing instead on the icy, suffocating presence she would project.

She slowly stood from her seat, her silky gown flowing behind her like a cascade of ice. Karine didn’t seem to notice the growing menace in Seraphina’s gaze as she moved to stand directly in front of her, her height and posture showing authority.

The room seemed to chill instantly, and Karine took an involuntary step back. Seraphina’s voice was a low, deadly whisper, each word making Karine’s blood run cold. "I don’t give a damn about whatever past you had with him, be you his betrothed or whatever other nonsense you call yourself. I am his wife now. And not only that..." Seraphina’s eyes turned to ice cold, deadly. "I am your queen."

A shiver ran down Karine’s spine at the words, and for a moment, she could feel her confidence faltering. The room was oppressive, and Seraphina’s icy demeanor seemed to close in around her like a vice. Karine swallowed hard but tried to hold her ground.

Seraphina leaned in closer, her gaze unwavering, and her words came out slow, deliberate, each one a dagger wrapped in silk. "Don’t you dare talk down to me again. Let me warn you, if you ever dare to make me feel as if you still have a claim on him... I’ll show you what happens when someone crosses the line."

Her voice grew darker with each syllable. "If you value your tongue, you should keep it to yourself. If you want to keep it, I suggest you learn the boundaries between us. The next time you barge in here like you just did, I won’t hesitate to get rid of you, and believe me when I say, I have no mercy to spare for someone like you."

Seraphina’s words hung in the air like a death sentence, her presence now more powerful than ever, and Karine, despite her bravado, could feel the weight of the threat settling on her like a cold, suffocating cloak.

For a moment, Karine was silent, her face pale, her hands trembling slightly. She wanted to say something, to lash out, but Seraphina’s cold, emotionless gaze shut her down completely. Karine felt herself shrink in the presence of a power that made her feel like an insignificant speck.

"Now... get out," Seraphina finished, her voice sharp as a blade, and the command was final.

Karine hesitated for a fraction of a second, then, unable to withstand the icy pressure any longer, she turned on her heel, her expression a mix of fury and fear. Without a word, she bolted from the room, the door slamming shut behind her.

Seraphina stood in the center of the room, her expression still as cold as ever. She could feel the adrenaline of the confrontation simmering beneath the surface, but there was no satisfaction in her victory, because deep down, the seed of doubt that karine had just planted was actually beginning to grow.

The maids, still standing in the corner, exchanged nervous glances before quickly going about their business, no one daring to speak a word.

And right then, something inside Seraphina snapped, so that bitch thought she could just come in and make her confidence falter, she was gonna make it clear to everyone in this palace, that Rhydian desired no one but her.
