Chapter 295: Chapter 295

Lyra

I was running so fast my legs were shaking like they didn’t even belong to me anymore, branches slapping against my arms., I wouldn’t stop, not with Damon’s blood all over my hands, not with his voice still in my head saying run, kitten, like he knew this was the only chance I had to make it out alive.

I couldn’t even see properly anymore because my tears were everywhere, burning my eyes, running down my face in hot, messy streams, and every time I blinked it just made the whole forest smear together.

I kept hearing things, shouts behind me, feet pounding against the ground, the low snap of branches breaking somewhere too close and I was gasping so loud it sounded like screaming, like the air was getting shoved into my lungs with knives.

My wolf was in my head the whole time and she was panicking so bad it made me panic more because she was supposed to be the brave one, the instinct, the strength, but right now her voice was shaking just like mine.

"Lyra, faster, you have to go faster, they’re coming, I can smell them, oh goddess, there’s so many, I can hear them getting closer, we have to run, we have to run now or this is the end of us both!

"I’m trying!" I shouted back even though my throat was raw, even though my legs already felt like they were tearing apart from the inside. "I’m trying, okay, but Damon—oh God—Damon is back there, he’s bleeding, he told me to run but I wanna go back , what if he dies, what if this is the last time I ever see him, what if he never opens his eyes again?"

He told you to run for a reason, my wolf snapped, her voice hard but I could still feel the fear shaking through it, he knew this was the only way you would live, do you want to waste it, do you want him to bleed for nothing, do you want him to die knowing you didn’t listen to him?

"No!" I was sobbing so hard. "No, I don’t want that, I don’t want any of this, I didn’t ask for this, I didn’t ask for Darren to lose his mind, I didn’t ask for knives or silver or strange men crawling out of the shadows, I just wanted a happy ending. I just wanted to breathe, I just wanted to feel safe for once in my life, is that too much to ask?"

Left, go left, there’s water ahead, maybe they’ll lose the scent if you cross it, go left now, Lyra, now! my wolf barked and I stumbled left so hard I nearly crashed into a tree because I was crying too much to see properly.

"I’m going, I’m going," I gasped out loud, tasting dirt and salt and blood on my tongue from biting my lip too hard, "I’m trying but my legs hurt, my whole body hurts, everything hurts and I can still hear them behind me, oh God, they’re still there, they’re still chasing me, why won’t they stop, why won’t this night stop, why won’t everything just stop for one second so I can think.."

Don’t think, just run, my wolf screamed at me. Run or we die here. Run or none of this means anything. Run or Damon’s blood is spilled for nothing. Run, Lyra, run!

"I’m fucking trying!" I shouted inside our own head because I couldn’t speak out loud anymore. "I’m trying but they’re right there, they’re so close, I can hear them, I can feel the ground shaking every time they land, I can smell them on my fur, oh my God, they’re so close!"

Shift was the only chance, my wolf snapped back at me, her voice sharp enough to cut through my terror even though I could feel her own fear tangled under every word.

We can’t stop now, we can’t slow down, you have to keep going even if your lungs burst, even if your heart gives out, even if your legs break under you, do you hear me, Lyra?

You keep running till you see Damon’s mum or any of his relative because if they catch us, it’s over, it’s done, they will drag us back and none of this will matter, not Damon bleeding back there, not the way he told us to run, not the way you love him even if you haven’t said it yet, none of it will matter if we die in these woods tonight.

And that was when I saw them.

Two shapes tearing through the trees on either side of me, massive wolves with glowing eyes, this sent shivers down my spine because they weren’t even running like they were in a hurry.

They were running like hunters who knew the prey was going to break soon, like they could smell how close I was to losing the strength in my legs, like they wanted me to know I wasn’t getting out of here alive.

And then the third one.

Straight down the middle of the path behind me, bigger than the first two.

Don’t stop, don’t stop, don’t stop, my wolf was shouting so loud it felt like she was ripping through my skull.

I don’t care if there are three, I don’t care if there are thirty, we do not stop, Lyra, we do not give up, we do not let them take us, do you hear me, we fight until the last breath if we have to but we do not let them win tonight!

"But they’re so close!" I cried back in my head even as I leapt over a fallen tree, my paws hitting the ground so hard on the other side my legs nearly buckled. "We can’t fight three of them, we can’t outrun three of them forever, what if this is it, what if this is the way we die?"
