Bride To His Darkness-Chapter 285: What Is Your Relationship With The Queen?
Chapter 285: What Is Your Relationship With The Queen?
The news about the missing Queen had reached the ears of the citizens, and it elicited a moment of panic on the people who knew her personally, including those who had admired her from afar. The town square buzzed with worried whispers that night, and concerned faces turned to each other, questioning the whereabouts of their new Queen. It hadn’t been long since she got crowned and they were about to lose her so soon?
Fueled by concern, the citizens had formed their own search parties, combing every inch of the kingdom to find their new beloved Queen who was rumored to be abducted by the witches from the south.
Inside the grand Palace, amidst the chaos, Lady Phyna found a moment alone in the dimly lit corridor. The weight of the responsibility and the uncertainty of the new Queen’s fate, gnawed at her composure. In a hushed voice, she muttered to herself,
"Perhaps, she wasn’t fit to be Queen after all, and now she’s probably run off, leaving us to deal with the mess." Her lips tightened, her condescending words lingering in the air.
Unknown to Lady Phyna, the worried Lucy was trailing behind her, her thoughts clouded by her friend’s mysterious disappearance from the Palace. In her moment of worry, she overheard the disloyal murmurs coming from Lady Phyna herself, and hearing someone, who was supposed to support her friend speak ill of her, and in a tensed moment like this infuriated Lucy, and before she could tame her anger, she had stormed towards the Lady Phyna, startling the vampiress with her presence.
"It’s you!"
"Who do you think you are to question the worthiness of our Queen? Especially in her absence?" Lucy spat, the anger in her tone, evident. "You know nothing of her struggles and sacrifices, don’t be so quick to judge when you’ve only known her for a few hours, compared to the days you were meant to spend with her. If you think she’s not worthy, you clearly don’t know the strength and grace she brought to this kingdom."
"I– you, I didn’t–" caught off guard, Phyna stammered on her phrase, unsure of how to place her sentence more appropriately, but Lucy shut her up with a fierce glare.
"Save your excuses," she clipped, "if you have any strong doubts about our Queen, swallow them and keep them to yourself. Don’t spill poison on the wrong side of the territory. As you can see, His Majesty is working day and night to find his Queen, and if words like yours gets out, you’ll be tied in the punishment room, and there are series of torture awaiting people with attitudes as spineless as yours."
"A common maid dares to insult me? And threaten me with His Majesty?" At this point, Lady Phyna could no longer keep quiet, as her pride was on the line.
"Let’s not lie to ourselves, she was never fit for the role and this! Her disappearance has proven my statement to be correct! Perhaps, it could be a blessing in disguise, no one can tell." She sneered, "Do you know the rank I hold in Vesunard? I come here and she bosses me around on how she wants to do things differently, and look where it has brought us? She probably left on her own because she couldn’t bear the weight of the crown. GreenHollow and the kingdom of Vesunard, deserves a stronger leader."
The venom in her voice hung clearly in the air, and Lucy, who had been left visibly aghast by her words, smiled instead, but the smile certainly didn’t reach her pretty eyes, "may the vampiress that dares to insult our Queen face the wrath of a thousand storm, but I can’t waste that on you since you have a cloud of jealousy raining on you every second of the day. In the end, Samantha will return, and those who doubt her will bow before her strength. Now this, I promise you."
With a determined stride, Lucy eyed the speechless vampiress and turned to take her leave. She was still itching to say more to that woman, but decided she wasn’t going to stress herself over a vampiress with coconuts for brains.
When she went past the courtyard and took the path that led to the maid’s quarters, she heard a voice suddenly speak behind her.
"Do you and the new Queen share a close bond?"
Subconsciously, her feet halted in their gait, and since she was already in a foul mood, she turned around to drive off whoever was ready to irritate her by this time of the night, but she was grateful at the end that she didn’t utter a word, cause the one who had spoken to her was Duncan himself.
What was he doing here?
"Your Majesty?" She lowered her head in a polite bow and raised them up to confirm she wasn’t daydreaming again, but it was really Duncan.
"Do you need something?"
"You haven’t answered my question." He deadpanned from the table where he sat, his crimson eyes fixed on the woman who seemed to have forgotten the question he asked earlier.
Fortunately, he and Ivan had discovered the kingdom were they assumed was controlled by the Queen of witches, also known as the Queen of the South, as that was her territory. He was heading to his quarters when he overheard the conversation going on between Lucienne and the vampiress, whom he recognized to have held a significant position in Vesunard. Normally, female arguments were always entertaining to listen to, however, he was piqued when the vampiress was rendered silent by the same princess he sought after.
She was sharp-mouthed, not one to keep quiet regardless of her present status. Personalities like this weren’t his type, but the more he observed her, the more interesting he found her to be. freeweɓnovel-cøm
"What is your relationship with the Queen?" He stood up from the table where he sat and made his way towards Lucy who kept her gaze fixed on the floor, and she answered,
"The Queen’s the only friend I have, and the only one I can trust... she’s one of those who doesn’t see me as a maid but a human like herself, but why do you ask?" Curiosity taking over, she carefully snuck a glance at the handsome vampire who tilted his head slightly at her inquiries, and Lucy’s heart skipped many beats when he appeared more beautiful under the moonlight, and she was tempted to touch his long, flowing hair.
"Do you remember our deal?" He took a step forward, and Lucy took one step back, leaving a decent amount of space between them. The Queen might be missing, but that doesn’t stop the rest of the servants from gossiping if she’s caught having a conversation with Duncan, alone, in the courtyard.
"What deal?" She asked, and Duncan repeated it.
"You said you’d come with me to Caledonia once your friend returns." He took a step closer, "you said you’d need Ivan’s permission before you can leave, well now he owes me one request, so you do not have to worry about not receiving permission from him, cause he will grant it."
"Why would he do that?"
"Are you mocking his capabilities?"
"Ah! No! That wasn’t what i–"
"Then he will grant it." He took another step closer till he was standing just an inch away from Lucy, and the young woman’s cheeks were tainted pink at the proximity. When he lowered his head to the side of her face, he whispered.
"The Queen will return soon, so you better start packing."
Leaving her with these words, he turned to take his leave. However, Lucy’s head kept on repeating his voice over and over and over until she stopped drooling over the magnetic force and tried to concentrate on the words instead.
Did he say the Queen will be returning soon???
