Chapter 316: Sneaking Into The Southern Borders

—-

When they successfully made it to the Southern borders, the huge iron gate was heavily guarded by Marius’s guards, making it nearly impossible to get in. The towering structure before them seemed insurmountable, its height accentuated by the vigilant archers patrolling the top.

Ivan’s keen senses detected the tension in the air– the guards were at full alert this time, their watchful eyes piercing the darkness as they moved about, staying warily conscious of their surroundings.

Ivan, who remained hidden by one of the bushes, could sense that Marius was more than prepared to welcome him with dozens of his armies. He clenched his teeth at the thought and turned to Duncan who remained hidden by the tree next to him, and after getting the message, Duncan turned to Lucy who had let her hair loose and was all prepared to act out her role for tonight.

She applied slight mud to her cheeks and allowed the hand of her dress to hang limply on her left arm. She was adding a few leaves and twigs to her hair only to catch Duncan staring.

"Too much?" She whispered, wondering if her outfit and appearance appeared real enough, or if she was exaggerating her attempts. Duncan was instantly snapped out of his trance by her voice. He averted his gaze and cleared his throat awkwardly.

"Ivan says it’s time... but are you sure you can do this?" He wanted her to realize the gravity of what she was about to do, because never in his life has he seen a woman willingly agree to be used as a scapegoat. If her plans don’t work, or if she fails to fool them, she would land in trouble, but to his surprise, this woman before him appeared confident, and her lips tilted proudly to the side.

"I have a remarkable skill when it comes to acting, Your Majesty, just watch."

Before Duncan could utter anything else, Lucy had stepped out of her hiding place. She exchanged glances with Ivan who reminded her of what she had to do, and she nodded, making him aware that she knew it already. Taking a deep breath while everyone waited for her to pull her acting, Lucy finally made a move.

The guards who were safeguarding the borders stayed alert, as they had already been informed of incoming intruders. The leader amongst them was strictly telling them to keep an eye on the borders when a strange lady suddenly ran out of the bushes with a frightened scream, catching them off guard. Their weapons were instantly unsheathed as the lady stumbled and fell to the ground, and in her eyes, there was evident fear as she seemed to be backing away from something in the woods.

"Help! Please! Th..they kept chasing me! V...vampires! Please!" She pointed at a direction inside the woods, but the guards remained cautious while studying her, in the hopes that she was not an imposter. She was clearly not a vampire, to their knowledge, which meant she had to be one of them. Her clothes were slightly disheveled, and her appearance clarified their suspicion that she must have been a victim to the vampires.

For those who were still in doubt, Lucy suddenly bursted into tears, palming her face and shaking her head in disbelief. "We only wanted to attend the firework feast, we only wanted to make it for the firework feast but... but they have my sister with them! Please! You have to save her! You have to..."

As Lucy carried on with her distraction, Ivan, Cassian and Tobias had used the opportunity to sneak off without notice. The only thing that gleamed in the dark was their vigilant crimson eyes, and after backing the walls of the gate, they quietly began to climb. The archers who were informed late only started to scout the forest when Ivan and his acolytes were out of sight, and unbeknownst to them, the three vampires had succeeded in making their way to the top.

Cassian observed what was below the ground level from the other side of the wall, and he came to the realization that their borders weren’t as strong as the ones in the North. Hundreds of soldiers patrolled below, but that wasn’t a problem as he was in a mood to cause a massacre.

The archers were still unaware of the trouble that had visited them, and silent killing instantly commenced. Ivan moved fast, biting off the flesh of the archers or ripping out their hearts while covering their mouth with his palm. One by one, they got rid of the archers, silencing them without causing an ounce of commotion, but in the process, Ivan felt an inexplicably painful tug in his chest, whilst it made him pause as it had been a long time since he experienced such pains.

Everything around him ceased when he got a whiff of Samantha’s scent, and for a moment, his heart stopped beating. The scent of his little lamb was so unexpected that he assumed it was merely his hallucination... as he was already within their borders. He wanted to keep going, but he paused when the pain stabbed his heart, and that made him stagger back, forcing him to lose grip of his stamina.

"Cassian." He whispered after Cassian had gotten rid of the last archer, "can you cover me?"

"What? Why?"

"Do it!" And he summoned his wings, unfurling them in one swift move.

The guards below had made their way to the forest, and two of them stayed back with Lucy. Unbeknownst to them, what awaited them in the woods was the flying scythe of Alistair, but before they realized what they were actually dealing with, their heads were no longer connected to their bodies. Duncan rummaged through one of the guards’ uniforms for anything he seemed useful, and took whatever he found valuable for their next plan.

"U look like a thief right now." Commented Alistair, but Duncan paid no heed to his words.

"Lucy still needs help, go help her." He stated frankly, whilst Alistair rolled his eyes and was out of sight. Madeline joined Duncan, and the vampire couldn’t help but feel bewildered by the actions of these women.
