Chapter 359: Stalling For Time

"Welcome back, did I take too long?" Carmela smiled as Marius rose from the symbol he was sitting on, and there was not a hint of smile on his stupid face. All the stitches in his body began to heal, their marks fading from sight, and he was anew, looking nothing like a body that had been decapitated weeks ago.

He cracked his neck, adjusting his bones in the right places, and when he breathed out a relieved sigh, a smile broke on his pale lips. His pitch-black eyes settled on Carmela who was standing meters away from the symbol, and beside her was Draven, who looked regularly composed.

His gaze darted to the frightened coven members who bristled back upon having him summoned, and the smile on his lips twitched. He looked down at his hands and balled them into fist.

"How many years?"

"It’s barely been a month, Marius." Carmela answered, and one of her coven members handed her a robe which she carefully draped around Marius, "were you planning to stay in that slumber of yours for another hundred years or more?

"Do you have her?" He asked, ignoring her question, and that ruined Carmela’s smile, as if she had heard something sour. She knew exactly who he was referring to as ’her’ but she managed to tame her anger and answered as politely as she could.

"No, I don’t." She stepped back when she was done attending to him, "I was too busy putting you together to bother about some human orb. But you’re here now, I’m sure you won’t have trouble getting her back, since all you need to do is do what you’ve always done with her, mess with her head a little and she’s back here."

"Don’t forget that Ivan must be on the lookout already," Draven began, joining the conversation, "I tell you, they must have figured the whole thing out and are probably out there searching for the both of you. I gave you the book cause you requested it, and I did exactly as you wanted me to do, but I’d hate to get meddled any further in this onslaught. I’d like to return now, if you don’t mind."

"It is true, you’ve done your part, and that I must applaud." Marius agreed with an understanding nod, and he approached Draven. "Thanks to your interference, I’m able to stand on my two feet again, and I can finally... get my revenge on those meddling vampires who did this to me. From today, your services won’t be needed, Lord Draven."

Marius sounded oddly appreciative, and Carmela, for once, did not oppose. Draven knew Carmela always wanted to get him out of their hair, and he was more than glad to do that since bringing Marius to life was his only goal. Only Marius could wipe those two leeches from the realm, and he couldn’t wait to fully get rid of them.

"I shall let you be." Draven added and was already turning to make his exit.

"Hold on." Marius suddenly stated, and his brows furrowed in contemplation. "Before you return, I almost forgot, but the vampires are heading here, aren’t they? If there’s one last thing you could do for me before you leave, would you do it?"

"What help can I possibly offer this time?"

"It’s an easy offer, one I’m sure you’re more than capable of dealing with. I just need you to–" and Marius stopped short in his sentence when he plunged his own hand into the spine of Draven, and it was so unexpected that Draven gazed at him wide-eyed.

Marius was smiling cruelly, and he withdrew his finger from Draven’s chest, revealing the nasty hole he had created, and Carmela’s smile broadened at the sight.

"You will stall them for me." Marius backed away when Draven dropped to his knees, coughing out blood. "That’s the last thing I want you to do for me before your soul crumbles. Your sudden death would give me time to flee and make preparations before they can think of looking for me."

"This..." Draven tried to choke out his words, "this isn’t what we..!!"

"If you return home, you will end up dying either way. You think if Ivan sees you he’ll spare your rotten life again? I doubt it. He would butcher your undead flesh slowly, painfully, and drain every life force inside of you with pure torture. I’m doing you a favor, giving you a much easier death so you won’t have to experience all that horror. This is my gift to you, for all the times you came to my aid."

"What a fool." Carmela’s laugh echoed softly within the concealed chamber as she stepped forward, where Draven struggled to breathe. "Did you really think you’d be part of us? Don’t forget, you’re a vampire and the difference in our clan proves that. You could have just stayed and helped your people, but if you can betray your kind, how are we sure that you won’t betray us the same way? And a cream to the top, we’re the enemy here. We don’t take chances, Draven."

Carmela’s coven members had backed away from the scene, hiding themselves in the shadows, and no one dared to utter a sentence. Draven lifted his head slowly to gaze at their faces, their smiles making mockery of his state.

He has never been rendered in such a lifeless position before. He was Lord Draven, defeating him so easily was impossible, but then, this demon was able to do it with just a hand plunged in his chest.

NO!! He wasn’t going to accept this fate!

"How are we sure they’re going to come here?" Carmela directed the question at Marius, "this chamber is located below a tree. It’s nearly impossible to find this place unless someone follows us here, which I believe isn’t the case, cause we would have sensed it."

"Does it look like I’m bothered about that?" He glared slightly at Carmela before pointing at two of the coven members who were discreetly hidden in the shadows.

"Take his body out and drop it somewhere Ivan and his men will see. It would clear off our trail. Ivan must believe that Draven took my soul and wanted to use it on himself!! If he’s smart enough to figure the one he captured at first wasn’t the real Draven, then seeing the actual Draven lying on the ground would cause a state of confusion."

"What if he talks?" Carmela cautiously whispered, and Marius gently crouched down to where Draven was still struggling to stay alive. An ominous shadow emitted from his body, embracing him like a gathering storm, and his lips twisted into a cunning smile.

"We’ll make sure he isn’t found alive to spill even an alphabet." he promised. freeweɓnovel-cøm
