Chapter 35: Commander

"Was it wise to send Levian to command an army when he’s so inexperienced?"

King Gaëlf and Archmage Supreme Jyselle sat atop the tree in his chambers, sharing a cup of tea.

Jyselle had expressed her concerns about Gaëlf’s decision, but the King was confident.

"Levian has potential that if he manages to tap into... well, let’s just say that I think he could surpass The Eleven Elven Elite. This is crucial for his development."

With the blindfold covering half her face, King Gaëlf wasn’t able to see Jyselle’s eyes of surprise.

"He’s strong, sure. But you also risk killing the boy now that you’ve sent him out there. Good luck bringing out the potential of a corpse."

King Gaëlf scoffed and took a sip from his tea.

"Do not worry. It will take more than that to make a corpse of a true elf."

Levian’s eyes glanced over the defeated unit within Dragon’s Mouth. At first, none of them seemed to move. They all just watched him with a sceptical look on their faces.

Then finally, a man pushed himself to his feet.

"Ease up, lads. It’s clear that this man is here to help us. Did you not see the sword in his hand before he arrived? He could have split our asses in half as soon as he found us."

The man who spoke stood out to Levian more than any of the others.

Unlike the rest, he did not wear thick green armour, but rather green robes that flowed loosely over his frail body.

The man stood roughly 1.6m tall, making him even shorter than most women. His cheeks were sunken, and his skin was pale like snow. His blonde hair was braided backwards into sectioned rows and on his chin was a small beard.

The robed elf held out a hand for Levian to take, which he did.

"My name’s Sun. Hehe, the only soldier here that hasn’t given up. What’s your name? I’ve never seen you before."

Levian decided straight away that he liked the man. He seemed to be the only one who still carried life in his eyes.

"My name is Levian Bladeblessed. I’ve been given orders to help you all escape from Dragon’s Mouth and return to Goldtree."

"Tskk, well good luck, Bladeblessed. Ever since Commander Inari was cut down by the enemy Commander, these lot haven’t moved an inch."

Sun pointed towards several piles of faeces on the ground to drive his point home.

Levian scrunched his nose and began to walk around, inspecting the forces closer.

Their physical condition isn’t terrible, but their morale is completely shattered.

...

If I can’t muster up their motivation, then these guys will all die. Either by the hand of the enemy, or by neglecting their bodily needs.

"I told you Bladeblessed. I’ve tried, trust me. Some have even offered to surrender." Sun sighed. It was clear that the weakness of his allies was bothering him.

Levian stood there for a few moments, scratching at his chin in thought. Then, a soft feminine voice suddenly cut him off.

"Just leave us..."

He turned towards the voice to find a young female knight, who might have once been cute, but now had her face and brown hair caked in dirt. Resting by her side was a bloodied longsword.

"What?" Levian said.

"Just leave us... Use whatever skill you used to get in here, and get back out. Save yourself."

Some of the other knights in Dragon’s Mouth stirred in agreement. They had already accepted death and thought there was no need for Levian to join them.

"Oh for fucks sake Valessa." Sun spat, kicking the dirt in anger. "The King sends us a new Commander, and this is how you treat him?"

Suddenly, a chesty chuckle came from another knight who sat on the ground.

"A commander? Let’s be real... we all know what he is."

All the eyes then turned to Levian. It was dark, so many had missed it before, but now...

"He’s a human. Look at his ears."

At those words, the knights grew more afraid. Some of them shuffled backwards on their seats, whilst others hovered their hands over their weapons.

Sun, the short mage, and Valessa, the female knight, were the only ones who didn’t seem to react. They were smart enough to realise that if Levian wished to cut them down, he would have done so already.

But before anything else could be said or done, an idea popped into Levian’s head.

He reached down for Valessa’s longsword and took it into his hands. It was a fine blade of rare quality, and the woman had not yet claimed it as her own, meaning that it had never been inside of her soulspace.

Some of the knights grew unsettled at the fact he was armed once again, but others watched with confused curious eyes.

Levian took the longsword into his soulspace, then, he turned to address the crowd.

"I’m sure many of you have been fighting in no man’s land for years. You have been unable to live regular lives, and have dedicated everything to taking down your enemy for the nation." 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

The knights listened intensely.

"But this war will soon be over. King Gaëlf has come to an agreement with the humans to settle the battle with an official duel. A duel that none of you will have to partake in 6 months from now."

For the first time, the knights began to mutter amongst themselves. None of them had heard of such an event, which was only natural.

Word had not yet spread of the duel, especially not to those in Dragon’s Mouth, a battlefield so difficult to reach.

"In other words," Levian continued with confidence. "This will be your last battle. The final fight. Make it out of this alive, and you can return home to your families. Heck, you could even go and explore the nation if you wished. You will finally be free!"

"But how?" Valessa spoke from the ground. "You bring great news, but how do we escape. The humans outnumbered us, and we don’t know when they’re gonna push and finish us off."

Levian used the words as a cue.

He reached into his soulspace and withdrew Valessa’s sword. However, it looked nothing like before.

It was still a Longsword, however now, the once silver blade gleamed a bright blue as though made from sapphire itself. The hilt, pommel and handle had been wrapped in a black leather so dark that it seemed to swallow the night itself.

The entirety of the knights within Dragon’s Mouth stared at the weapon in utter disbelief. Not only was it legendary, but it was a beautiful one at that.

"By the gods..." Valessa whispered as Levian handed her the weapon. "This is my sword?"

Levian nodded his head, flashing the army a smile that sent a fresh wave of determination into their souls.

"It is." He answered. "Now, everyone bring an unclaimed weapon to me. We’ll face the human army, but only with an arsenal of legendaries."
